Oh my.
First, there was this, on Manny's jackass message board:

The Wizard of OS asked me to let everyone know..
Both his pc and a/c died. He won’t be online tonight.
But he’ll be back as soon as he can!
Which drew a few responses--the subject almost immediately changing from the big guy's plight to other things--and a whole lot of yawns.

Back online, A/C is running, so is the PC
The A/C was worked on Wednesday night. Needed a new capacitor. It was original equipment.
Last night there was a communication failure that shut down the outside central unit.
We had a new thermostat installed last Nov, and this was the first time that happened. The tech turned on the unit and it ran fine. Next time we will know to check for that.
I could have fired up our laptop or our backup PC, I just wasn’t in the mood to get online when the A/C went out on the hottest day of the year* after a repair the night before. It was overheating and shutting down because the A/C was out.
I was shopping for a new A/C. There is a nice unit with a SEER rating of up to 21. It is a two stage unit that is built to allow solar panel direct plug in. It qualifies for a state low interest loan and there is a rebate until the 19th, We are thinking about it.
*I'll bet he wasn't; I'll bet the big guy was sweating like a pig.
Anyway, so the big guy's recrudescence brought forth four replies, one of which is his own, and again, a whole lot of yawns.
The big guy's got to learn.
Nobody cares, least of all his fellow primitives.

Those capacitors for the compressor motor are a weak point in many/most air conditioners. Our 12YO AC is on its 3rd or 4th. And heat is not the friend of your techno-toys.
Welcome to life, Tobers. I would have thought that however many decades in the Midwest and Plains would have him familiar with the climate there. Maybe nads could come for a visit and give a weather report or two.
(Having grown up in CA's Central Valley and lived 6 years in AZ's Valley of the Sun, I do know something about hot weather.)

That is just pathetic.

Capacitors are funny things. I had one go out on my water pump after 8 years. Needing a quick replacement, I pulled one out of an old motor I had that was 12 years old at the time, and put it in. I bought a replacement, which I still have in my "junk" drawer at the house, but the 12 year old capacitor is still working, after 6 years!!!

That's a usage of which I was unaware, not being very mechanical. The condenser in non-electronic ignition systems is a capacitor, "condenser" being an old term for "capacitor".
Capacitors store a charge. When the AC compressor motor first starts, it needs a really big slug of current that the wiring of one's house can't handle. The capacitor, being close, with a good connection to the motor can supply that slug of current for the brief time it's needed. The rest of the time that capacitor corrects the power factor, which is another, important, thing altogether. Over time those slugs of current every time the compressor motor starts up break down connections inside the capacitor.
I wonder, regarding Tober's computer. Does he know enough to realize that the computer manufacturer's warnings not to block airflow to his computer by placing it tight in a corner and/or by putting junk right up against the computer is not a techno-feng-shui suggestion.

I do, too. Going to take my car in and then walk back home, about 2 hours' brisk walk. Oil change done, Saturday long walk done. Fascinating, right? :banghead:

And H-5.
ETA: For the terminally curious, I should be on the Los Gatos Creek Trail (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Gatos_Creek_Trail) between Campbell Park and Vasona Lake Park during the 11 AM (PDT) hour. After dropping off my car.

The big guy was too lazy to start a new comment, and so just added to his original post, quoted above.
Latest update: The A/C compressor is dying. It is a 23 year old scroll unit. Top of the line at the time. They were finally here at the right time to catch what it was doing. It might be a week to 10 days of no A/C here.
Update: With the A/c out my 2 year old PC overheats and shuts down. New fan on the way.
Marta and I were watching “The incredibles†when our Onkyo receiver had a loud pop. It shut down. When we try to restart it we get a dreaded check SP on the display. It is a well known Onkyo problem. This is our second Onkyo to fail under warranty. We are changing brands. We used to be a Kenwood house. It got sold and is no more.
Busy day. I’ll be talking to the Onkyo service people. Looking for a new unit. A/C guy has to stop by. Go to the store etc.

I hope he isn't replacing a cheap crap fan with another cheap crap fan. If he's buying a Who-the-Hell-are-They brand sleeve bearing fan he'll be doing this again in a year or two.

He is... the least interesting man in the world.
"My AC doesn't always go out, but when it does, it's the capacitor's fault."

I recall his in laws purchased him a new A/C unit just last year.

I thought so as well. Dummies lie, all the time dummies lie.
I can't say I ever had a capacitor on a home AC go out. Back when I worked in the restaurant business I had some go out on walk ins. Bad power was usually the culprit.

I keep mistaking the title as "the big guy over eats, but not many seem to care" although it still would not change the amount of interest the primitives have in the life of Steve.
