Brazillian fans chant anti-gay slurs towards US women's soccer team
Late in the U.S. team’s opening-game win in the Olympic women’s soccer tournament Wednesday, the tiny crowd of 9,556 inside hulking Estadio Mineirao began entertaining itself.
First it tried the wave. Then it chanted “Zika!†every time famous anti-virus crusader U.S. keeper Hope Solo attempted a goal kick.
Then the crowd crossed the line.
Three U.S. players said Thursday that Brazilians on the sidelines told them fans were also chanting an anti-gay slur often used at men’s club games in Brazil. The Sydney Herald reported the same homophobic taunt was hurled at Australian keeper Lydia Williams and Canadian goalie Stephanie Labbe in Sao Paulo, where Brazilian journalists said it was the first time they knew of the slur being used at a women’s game in their country.
“It is personally hurtful,†offered U.S. midfielder Megan Rapinoe, who said the stretcher crew near the American bench told her what was being shouted. “I think sort of a mob mentality kind of takes over a little bit.â€
“I don’t think most of those fans would have said that directly to my face. I don’t think they mean it in that way,†continued Rapinoe who, like U.S. Coach Jill Ellis, is openly gay. “But they need to understand that that’s how it’s taken. They need to understand if all of you are willing to do that, what does that say to a gay player? Especially in the men’s game.
“What does that say to players who are struggling to come out?â€

Anti-gay chanting during soccer matches is becoming common especially in Central and South America. FIFA has made attempts to crack down on such behavior as of late. Argentina, Chile, Honduras, Peru and Uruguay have all been fined recently. It's also spread to Europe where Croatia was ordered to play its next two home qualifiers in empty stadiums.

1. Homophobia: A worldwide curse
It is hard to imagine there are some people, who dare call themselves liberals and progressives, who still think GLBT civil/human rights in the US are "boutique issues" when shit like this happens, and this ain't even that bad. Gay teen hanged in Iran. Ugandans arrested at Gay pride. Saudi men catfished on Grinder then sentenced to lashes and imprisonment. PULSE.

3. DU does not care and in fact dismisses homophobia entirely
Of course if that crowd had chanted slurs against another minority group DU would be burning down the Olympics with words. What DU is into is not equality but a sort of supremacist thinking in which a few groups are held as above any and all criticism while others are subjected to open verbal abuse and worse.

Snork - apparently s/he/it Bluenorthwest's accurate but probably unappreciated post hit a little too close to home:

Welcome to international sports fandom. It's nasty, ugly, and etc., but it's the reality athletes chose.
Now if Ellis and Rapinoe did an exhibition match at BJU or Liberty University, which they probably detest, would they truly expect anything like this kind of crudity from Bob Jones or Liberty students and/or faculty? The greatest "danger" they'd face would be the delicious donuts and other foods they'd be offered by those schools' hospitality! And maybe the "danger" posed to their stereotypes by meeting real Evangelical and Fundamentalist Christians.

I "boldly" Googled it. It means being lured into the open through fake posts on the gay (?) dating/hook-up site "Grindr".

Latin America is anti-gay because of a culture of machismo.

It's far deeper than most DU-folk care to learn and understand, but most Brazilian Catholicism is nominal at best. If Catholicism affected very much how most Brazilians' live the amount of adultery, fornication, and prostitution, of murder, and of sexual exploitation of children (to name a few of the less subtle "mortal sins") would be far less. Even now, I doubt I would hear anti-gay epithets wandering around a cathedral or neighborhood parish church.

Aaawww, ooo widdle feewings hurted? Ooo need a safe pwace! Naughty people who said mean things get no cookies!

Something along the lines of '**** off, homo,' is my guess.

Or maybe just, "Shut up and play futbol!" Who cares what a (name of sport) player does in his or her bedroom? What is up with the exhibitionism of "coming out", of proclaiming to the world the plumbing of one's bed partner?

The left considers gays as useful freaks and you do nothing but meekly oblige them.

I'm pretty sure the overwhelming majority of the international soccer audience holds gays in contempt and disgust, and regards their presence on the field as nothing but another knock on already-hated rivals. All that high-minded sportsmanship stuff is limited to the teams themselves, if even there.

Welcome to Libs'/Progs' Hierarchy of Victimhood! As might be expected from rejecters of standards and principles, it's flexible. And right now gays are lower in that hierarchy than Muslims and POCs (didn't you learn that from Orlando?!).

I'm not an international soccer fan, but I think hot lesbians with a video camera and no inhibitions serve an important purpose!

Well, I'm with you on that one. Not sure the 'Hot' part fits most of the ones involved here, though.

Olympic athletes should be fit. Maybe they're butterfaces. I could handle that.

Me too also. If you are like me BD, my standards have gone waaay downhill since my youth. It is amazing what I will settle for nowdays.

You are a female in the second or third most macho sport in the games. There is no "struggle."
The sympathy should be for those who are trying to come out as STRAIGHT.

I was watching them play on the tube the other day. 'Fit,' true, but kinda manly-looking as a group. I dunno how long male hormones show up in piss tests, but I'm betting a lot of them could tell you exactly what the best forensic science on the subject has to say about it.

Yeah. A lot more rangy-looking and craggy-faced than a weight-lifter, of course.

Not just you. I was wondering about that myself.

That makes me feel a little better, but, here is how the exclusion of that information strikes me:
"Someone chanted something bad at the Olympics. People were offended. You do not need to know what it was. Take our word for how bad it was. Trust us, we are the orlando sentinel ".
This leaves multiple bad tastes in my mouth.

MSM folk don't like reporting when POC behave badly. In this case the chants probably were heard in TV coverage - as well as by US spectators - and there are enough Portuguese-speaking people in the US that keeping a lid on these Brazilians' crude behavior was not possible. So they reported it, without details that would show just how crude they were being.
That's my cynical speculation. Maybe the Sentinel just didn't have anyone able to translate Portuguese.

It's life, yes, but not as we know it.

They don't all smell the same, they don't all feel the same, and they don't all taste the same. But they're all pretty when the lights go out.
