i can see someone wishing they could earn a silver star. but a purple heart?

I'm assuming your question was rhetorical. He actually cleared that up when he was running for pres. The medals he tossed belonged to some poor crippled vet who couldn't manage to toss them himself. Then the press mistakenly reported he had tossed his own. They have been proudly displayed in his office for years. A remarkable collection which included the Silver Star with "V" device. Extremely rare, in my thirty years service I have never seen another.

Kerry was a decorated Navy officer in Vietnam who became a prominent antiwar activist upon his return home. A group calling itself "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" has accused Kerry of lying to win combat decorations in Vietnam, including the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
And last week, former Sen. Bob Dole, the party's 1996 presidential nominee, brought more attention to the allegations when he told CNN's Wolf Blitzer, "With three Purple Hearts, he never bled that I know of. And they're all superficial wounds."

Sadly, there are shitbags out there who will do stuff like that. I knew a guy who tried something similar to that in Ramadi. Claimed TBI from an IED that went off 100 meters away from him... while he was in a Bradley armored fighting vehicle. Needless to say, the PA laughed at him and told him to leave.

I'm sure more than a handful of DU-folk do NOT[p/b] know for what a Purple Heart is awarded, don't give a #$%, and would readily deride recipients as "baby-killers" and other Lib/Prog epithets for men and women who served this country honorably.

To continue the story. When Kerry demanded a Purple Heart the Ops. Officer, and Doctor at his in-country training command both recommended it not be awarded and the CO concurred. When he moved to his operational command, he was again denied the award. At a later date, the award appeared in his jacket and he used it and two other lame Purple Hearts to illegally get out of country with only four months service. When the Swiftvets were fighting him, both of his CO's came forward and stated in sworn and public testimony that they had never signed a recommendation for that award. Their hope was that he would sue them and they could get discovery of his sealed service records. If they could have obtained his records, they expected to prove he effectively deserted in the face of the enemy and later received a dishonorable or other than honorable discharge for his antics with the NVA in Paris while still a Reservist.

A little-known fact about the Purple Heart is that unlike other decorations, and due to its nature, the treating MTF commander can sign off on the award, and there is some reason to believe that Kerry had some family acquaintance in such a position in country, and 'Treating' could be a paperwork drill with no relation to the minor treatment he did receive, the Medical Corps especially at that time would have had a plethora of hospital commands (CSHs, MASHs, Evac Hospitals) of various sorts with O6 commanders in the weasel's AO.

That didn't stop him from bragging about them during his 2004 presidential campaign to try and get the veteran vote, while conveniently forgetting to mention the times when he openly referred to his fellow Vietnam veterans as "War criminals."
