In the auto parts store yesterday...white privilege
One of the brake lights in our second car had burned out. I didn't notice it, because I can't see it when I'm driving, and I'm almost never following it when my wife is driving. A week ago, though, I was following her and noticed it.
So, I went into the auto parts store yesterday and bought a replacement. I actually had some, but they were old style, rather than the push-in based version the PT Cruiser used. I picked up a two-pack so I could replace both, since the car had the original bulbs in it.
I took them to the counter. The guy at the cash register said, "Yeah, not a good time to have burned out tail lights."
It took me a second to realize what he was talking about, but then I remembered the police shooting of a black guy in a nearby city the other day. He was stopped for just that thing. I just nodded and paid for the bulbs, which I installed later that day. As a old guy with white privilege, it never occurred to me that a burned out brake light could pose a life-threatening risk for me if noticed by a cop. That's because it wouldn't pose such a risk for me.
I've thought about that a lot since then. It's an extremely sad commentary on our culture and society, I think. We all need to check our privilege.
Cool story RockHead. I have been reading reports that the reason Philando Castile was pulled over is because he matched a BOLO alert for an armed robbery suspect from four days prior. The lady who made the video just made up the broken tail light scenario. It also appears that he had his pistol on his thigh, covered by his shirt, and that he has never had a carry permit.

Anyone remember his bullshit story about how no one at the grocery wanted to go through the black checker's lane? That supposedly happened around the time of some other race-related DUmp outrage.

I sincerely doubt any counter worker at an auto parts company would make a comment like that. They'd ring you up, collect your money and wish you a nice day.

I experienced some "white privilege" that few blacks do. I had to pay my estimated quarterly taxes last month. Worst "white privilege" was when I had to pay all of my property taxes in April. However, the very most horrid "white privilege" was for the 40 years I went to work, started businesses, and hired other "white privilege" people. I sure would have liked to party until 3:00 and wake up when the sun was nice and warm. Then stroll out to the mailbox to see if my gubermint check done come or if YT had recharged my EBT.
Yeah the only way MM gets into a PT is through the rear hatch. Even then it would take a gallon of Vaseline.

Actually it probably was on his dominate side hip but the way the feral pukes wear their pants these days it probably would be down around the thigh area.

Must not be very tall. I'm only 6'0", and I can't sit in the front seat of a PT Cruiser without scrunching down. To me, PT Cruisers are (were, since they've been out of production for several years) ugly-cute, but that sloping roof makes it unsafe or impossible for me to drive one. The Chevy HHR is a bit larger, and doesn't have the sloping roof.

The several times I've been pulled over for a burnt out tail light were at night time. I don't the police officer had a clue to my skin color until he was walking up to my car door. [Sarcasm] Being white-privileged, [/Sarcasm] asking, "Is there something wrong, officer?" resulted in nothing worse than fix-it tickets. [Sarcasm] It's funny how not being a defiant smart-ass avoids escalations into potentially violent confrontations. I suppose my life-long habits of not robbing people and not doing recreational chemicals might be relevant in the reasons for which I occasionally get pulled over. [/Sarcasm]
