David Brown, the police chief who told media that police were “heartbroken†over the Dallas shootings, is no stranger to gun violence and loss.
The girlfriend of Brown’s 27-year-old son had called police earlier that day to say he was having “a psychotic breakdown†and had hit her, according to media reports.
Hours later, the younger Brown shot 23-year-old Jeremy McMillian as he drove with his girlfriend and two children in Lancaster, Texas, a suburb of Dallas.
When a Lancaster police officer, 37-year-old police officer Craig Shaw, responded to the shooting, the younger Brown shot and killed him, too.
Before that day, Brown’s son had only a minor criminal record, including an arrest involving marijuana.

I remember when that happened. I'd forgotten about that. It was incredibly sad and I thought the chief handled it well.
