I just got fired.
I was totally blind-sided by it. Never even had a clue it was coming.
I've been working a job for a little less than three months. I liked it and had planned on making a career out of it. Today I got paired with a guy I've been filling in for. He supposedly has a bad wrist and is on light duty. I've been doing the job without him for the past two months and everything has been getting done. I've heard no complaints.
Well this guy really starts cracking the whip and trying to get me to do all sorts of things that other people in that position don't have to do. He's not my boss. He's on the same level as me. We are just regular employees. I tell him that if the boss wants me to do that stuff he needs to tell me.
So this little shit goes off and calls the boss and the human resources manager at home and I don't know what he told them. They come in and call me into a meeting. They told me that they've gotten word that I'm not doing what I'm supposed to be doing not only with the little shit who called them, but in other areas as well. They tell me that a guy who works inside says I'm lazy and I don't work well with him. This guy has never said a thing to me about it and I've always done what he's asked. But he's been going to HR frequently it seems and telling them all kinds of lies about me.
I tried to give them my side of the story, but I think the fix has been in for quite some time here and they didn't believe a word I said.
What has happened is that one person decided they didn't like me for some reason unknown to me, and since I was in my probationary period they decided to go on a little campaign. I had a hard time not having legal problems due to that person today. I stormed out of the office cussing up a storm. I could have gone one way and beat the living shit out of somebody or I could have gone the other and cleared out my locker. Fortunately probably for a lot of people, I chose the locker.
I wrote on here the other day that I think a majority of Americans are bat chit crazy. This only affirms that belief in my mind. It takes a total lack of the capacity for empathy to do what they did to me there today.
-
Yea, it's not his fault, he didn't do anything wrong, he's just being picked on and the boss doesn't like him. Man this guy is a case...
-
Wasn't he reported/reprimanded last week for sleeping on the job? The circumstances of that, plus this new "incident" suggest to me that some one was building up a case file toward this firing for at least a couple of months.
-

Yea I remember reading that thread. He's been on the ropes for a while. You would think the dumbass would have gotten the hint and got his ass to work...
-
I was totally blind-sided by it.
Me too!
Never even had a clue it was coming.
Me neither!
I kid.
-
He probably started braying about Hillary getting off today and the people he works for had had enough...
-
I thought they'd do it this Friday or next. They weren't giving him anything to do for the last couple of days and that's usually a sign they are going to fire you at their convenience.
Sounds like he showed his again on his way out, doubt the old job will want him back, either.
-
Oh com'n! He only sleeps on the job and takes 30+ minute breaks in his car because there's nothing to do. Who could be so heartless?
.

dawg
16. I hate that this happened to you, Tobin.
Losing a job like that is a real kick to the gut. I've been there.
But don't be overly worried. You have skills that are in demand. You'll land on your feet.

I remember getting terminated and yeah I aired it out on here. But good God, seriously? Reading his post you would think management just came to work that day just to can his ass with no reason. Sorry, it doesn't work like that.

13. That really sucks! File a claim for unemployment benefits asap.
You'll need gas money to go on interviews. Good luck!
Sorry you lost your job.
^^^ Automatic answer - I just got canned, please give me money...

14. I plan on going to file for unemployment benefits tomorrow.
But I have enough savings to last me for at least a couple of months if I don't get that.
^^^ I am pretty sure that being fired for cause does not lead to unemployment benefits.

17. You'll get it. Sometimes there is a delay if the company fights your claim but you'll win.

Knowing the posters above all may mean well, DO NOT TAKE ANY ADVERSE ACTION AGAINST THE COMPANY!!!
NONE!
Do not say anything bad about them in person or in social media. It will serve you no purpose whatsoever and may come back to bite you in the ass.
In fact, let this thread run its course then delete your OP.
^^^ I wonder if he has been following the various wallduding incidents :whistling:

Yeah, ..... some people. :whatever:

A wise man once said: "Doctors have found that 1 out of every 4 people are crazy. So, if you pick out 3 of your friends, and they're ok, then it's YOU!"
Wouldn't work for Tobin the tubby. All his friends are as crazy as he is. :rotf:
-
Oh c'mon! It was their lack of capacity for empathy that did him in.
As for UE, I guess it depends on the state. In NY, they have hampered economic activity to such a degree that they tend to throw crumbs to the little people, strong-arming any remaining companies into ponying up. I think if you quit, though, you are SOL.
Oh BTW, KamaAina also got fired. Probably for being the stupidest person on earth.

25. I am so sorry Tobin.
I just lost mine two months ago. Yes fired and yes they were mean to me. You should have no problem with benefits. File right away, there is a 2 week lag for benefits to kick in.
It has been 10 years since I was last unemployed. Ummm there are reams of paperwork to fill out now and I do mean reams. I hate picking up my mail now. The first batch I got from them were 6 very thick envelopes. I am going nuts.
"Going" nuts?!? You're alrady there and beyond, primitive.
Who'd have thought this Dear Leader and Cankles suck-up would have gotten fired? The first thing that comes to mind when I think of someone who is a left-wing political zealot is "stable personality and hard working."
:rotf: :lmao: :rotf:
Yea, that's it. Stable and hard working. :rotf:
I thought all this wasn't suppose to happen during Dear leaders reign.

5. Thanks, snot. I'll check into it.
I can relate. I have to work six days a week just to get by. I'm not going to have any vacation time for at least a year.
Problem Solved!
-
There's certainly indicators in this that there's a whole lot more to this story:
What has happened is that one person decided they didn't like me for some reason unknown to me, and since I was in my probationary period they decided to go on a little campaign. I had a hard time not having legal problems due to that person today. I stormed out of the office cussing up a storm. Being laid off is different from being fired, but in the several times I've been laid off I've NEVER "stormed out of the office cussing up a storm". Not even close. And if he really was canned the same day as the final straw, he must've done something VERY serious (and well documented!).

Reads a lot like you got fired for being a zero-initiative clock-punching drone putting the minimum into it, with a union 'Work to rule' attitude and no actual union to hide behind. Tough titty, Tobin.
-
I am a little confused by the words and wisdom of Tobin. He states that he has to work 6 days/week to make it and then he also states that he has enough in savings to get by for a while.
But on reflection I should be confused since I'm basically, as Tobin himself would say Bat Sh%# Insane. What's worse is I don't even know it, I have no clue. Education is the key, or so they say. I think I shall go to college and get a degree in sociology. Or maybe an MBA in something. Or a CDL. At least until I get this all figured out somewhat.
Can someone please send out some vibes?

Government requirements, aren't they fun? Sheshe exaggerates about the volume, but there is one tricky piece of paperwork that may prove troublesome. The record of work search efforts. It's auditable at a moment's notice.

Well, it is too late to Walldude or give tubby Tobin the Doug Bulna treatment. If this story is even true.
Strange that he deleted it, unless he was getting PM's that noticed it's lies.

Sleeping on the job? Sitting idly by while waiting to be tasked? Spending an entire shift sitting on your ass and contemplating how crazy the rest of us are?
I'm shocked you didn't get promoted. :whatever:

That degree is a bit to too much, something a bit more modest with less marketing potential and a higher cost might not be more appropriate? Wouldn't want to give the appearance that I'm overqualified for work a paycheck.
But I do appreciate the offer. Would you be able to drop it off at my place? This afternoon before the dart tournaments begins?

Some states, like Illinois make it easy for union members. All that is required is signing the book at your union.

Oh yeah, NY is like that too. All kinds of exemptions for union guys. What a crock. What do these guys do down at the union hall? Is it like a VFW where they drink beer and shoot the shit?

I don't know what they do at meetings. In 27 years of belonging to one, I've went to a total of two meetings. The first was when I was sworn in and the second was for a vote on raising our dues.

I delivered mail to one. Don't recall beer, but it did consist of a bunch of guys sitting around all day hoping (I guess) that a spot would open up at the vacuum place across the street. Right to work would've cleaned up that community immensely

I used to work with a girl who was married to a union electrician. They have a rotating arrangement in which when it's your turn to work, you work, generally on a fixed project. The guy seemed to be always in a state of unemployment, sitting around the house for days on end. I think it drove her crazy, even though she'd been raised to believe in the union way.

Had to visit a steel workers hall once to pick up literature for my daughters school project, they were playing poker. Didn't even get up, just pointed. :stoner:

"Bet I can jump this creek with this forklift." :rotf: I knew a dumbass who surfed down the stairs in a bustub. Fired.
-
Now it can be told.
Me and my 7-year employer (which bought my prior 15-year employer) parted ways at the end of May. Not for my performance, which was stellar.
The facts:
Those in the Consulting biz will understand this: nearly 100% utilization (85% goal), 2 years of work lined up, all reviews Excellent or Outstanding. Beloved by colleagues and clients (truly -- proof in a minute).
The reasoning: The Company wants people that do the "networking" thing. They want proof that you are contributing to The Company beyond just billing the hell out everything (my bill rate: $300/hr). It wasn't just me. The Company decided to eliminate many up-mid-level techies who don't Play The Game Well. My spies (I have many) tell me that a raft of people in my position (well paid, high tech performers, hands-on, knowledgeable) were purged. My "supervisor" has been put on death watch himself.
What is going on is that The Company doesn't really understand technical Consulting (they just lost a HUGE deal) and think you can offshore everything. Also, I am a bit older and, even though I promise you I keep my tech skills current, I don't Social Media because I don't think anyone gives a rat's ass that I just took a crap at the Starbucks at Wilshire & Westwood while waitring for a Frappe that has as many calories as Big Mac.
I look forward to watching The Company crash and burn when they realize they CAN NO LONGER DELIVER on their technical projects (as was already realized by one of the largest companies in the US).
Anyway, what did I do?
Of course, I went to my nearest Internet BB and whined and cried and complained about how I was set up.
Oh, wait, that isn't what I did at all.
One: I have never lost an argument, much less a job (/Charles Emerson Winchester III). No matter if it was senseless, it is demeaning, embarrassing and something I would prefer not to publicly admit (no offense my DC homies!). I aqm old-fashioned and capable of shame.
Instead, I took stock of my situation. Many years of thrift and decent investment put me in a pretty good cash position. I and Mrs. FD could go 2 years unemployed if I chose (I choose not). Let me note that Mrs. FD has been a rock throughout this. Without her support I would have probably collapsed and maybe even hit the bottle in a pity-party (I don't drink -- from choice, not AA).
Then I hit my networks HARD. I have dozens of clients and hundreds of people who I had a great relationship with. I have "worked miracles" in more than one place and always get along well with people (despite evidence on this board I really DO have a good sense of humor).
Let me wrap it up for one and all: After one week of terrible/no sleep and constant contact I have hung out my shingle, have work for the next 3 years or so lined up and actively working now and at about 40% more than my salary (truth!) I have to pay my own Health Care but that is not so terrible as all that: about $900/mo for me and the Mrs.
We were worried about what I would do when I retire and talked about going independent. Well, The Company forced my hand, and did me a HUGE favor by kicking me in the ass.
I have started an S-Corp (or C-Corp - my accountant is going back and forth) and will start getting a paycheck from me next month (as will Mrs. FD).
I am now either: self-employed or semi-retired. I don't care which. I am close enough to my Retirement "Magic Number" I expect to hit it next year based on the work I have lined up. My boss is an asshole but I can deal with him ;)
I have told this to no one on any site -- my family only knows part of the story.
No more mid-year/year-end reviews! No more stupid "What did you contribute to the Company?" year-end. No more "Give back to the Community" while having 25 people paint a fence that 1 could do in an hour (while getting free high-end catered lunch). I work for me. I call my hours and am answerable to no one, except the clients who only need deliverables.
Also: NO MORE TRAVEL!! After 3 million air miles and 1,500 hotel nights I am home and that is part of my contract. I am Plat for life at one airline and hotel chain so that works for me. I am getting healthier by the day!
Tobin is the polar opposite of we on this board. I am 100% sure any and all on this board if unexpectedly separated would do what I did: take a moment to mourn, look at options, decide on a plan, pull the trigger, live with the results.
You heard it here first.
-
No more mid-year/year-end reviews! No more stupid "What did you contribute to the Company?" year-end.
I was about to say, all that self-evaluation and review process will be much simpler and quicker.
:bouncy: time ... I've been laid off 5 times since 1993, 4 since being on Internet discussion sites. AT MOST I let friends know what is up and ask for their prayers. I do NOT burn bridges! I'm not that stupid! More often, I say nothing online until I am at my new job. Prospective employers talk to past employers, and sometimes I meet people I've worked with before when interviewing for a job. Bad-mouthing one's employer or past employers is a good way to make oneself unemployable!

One of my current contractor gigs is with The Company. I still have many friends there who are aghast at the pogrom.
They need me, I need them: I will use them like a rented mule as long as I can.
Their destruction will take time -- more than enough for me to profit.
In the meantime, Go Company!

My dear freedumb, well done!
I've had a lengthy career path myself, bounced around a bunch after college. My longest run was at sylvania. After 5 years, I wasn't thrilled where things were going. Bounced from there back into a machine shop (big mistake) and lasted 6 months before they ran out of capital projects and let me go. I hit it HARD after that, went on an interview spree that would shock most people. Sucked it up this time and took unemployment. We cleaned up our finances a bunch during sylvania so we were somehow making money off those checks. I refuse to be defined by my failures, I stayed agressive for months and wouldn't settle for just any job. It all paid off

My first layoff - 1993, a company that no longer exists, even within the company that swallowed the company that swallowed them - the company had pre-paid outplacement classes for the people who had been laid off (a large number). I looked around the room, and realized two things: 1 person out of the 20 or more there had been at the company less than 5 years; while I had been at the company for over 11 years, a quarter or more had been there longer than I. IOW, the company was getting rid of people who were at the high end of the salary range for their positions and were accruing vacation at the highest rate.
Sounds like your former employer's "pogrom" may have had a similar goal. With those laid off went a lot of "corporate memory" - of how to get things done, contacts internal and external - and a lot of relationships with customers. Short-term actions have long-term consequences.

That is what I was thinking. I think that he started the job, they figured out he could/would not cut the mustard, and brought in the guy that was either gonna train him to do what he needed to do or get rid of him. Tubbs pushed back and the guy called the boss and said failure. Canned his ass.
I think he left his last job one step ahead of the termination.
I had some hopes for Tubbs. Seemed to have a little ambition. Alas, he turned out to be another run of the mill lazy dummie and the end result is what we have here.
-
Dollars to donuts Tobin didn't apply the adage about the best time to work at looking for a job.

Admittedly, in my younger days I found myself in the same position a couple of times in my first attempts at official employment (my first jobs were unofficial farm work etc)... high school jobs. McDonalds was the first one and a grocery store was the second. The indicators are there, you just need the cognitive abilities to see them, and the primitives seem to lack that basic skill. There's always indicators before you get canned and anyone with half an operating bean in their skull will recognize them and adjust. There's always a warning shot from employers.
Being an irresponsible teenager, I attracted attention to myself by goofing off. I learned in short order and have never been fired from a job as a result. I think everyone knows what I mean. Tubby apparently decided he could push as far as he wanted. Wrong.

Being an irresponsible teenager, I attracted attention to myself by goofing off. I learned in short order and have never been fired from a job as a result. I think everyone knows what I mean. Tubby apparently decided he could push as far as he wanted. Wrong.
I'm not the best at keeping the details, quirks, and predilections of prominent DU luminaries straight, but isn't Tobes a "union man" to the bone (or gelatin)?

What kind of dart tournament doesn't have beer?
Sorry BD but I have important things to worry about such as who's gonna pay for my Cadillac.

Pretty sure you are correct on that one. Besides, he's a DUmmie... it kinda comes with the persona.

Sad part in all this is he still has no clue why he was canned.

I suspect that he thinks it was because he is smarter than everybody else and they can't handle it.

That is the usual dummie thought process.
As an experiment I would like to round up all the dummies, put them on an island and tell them that they can set up their own superior form of government.
I figure within 6 months they would all be dead.

Funky, you were a teenager. He's in his 40's! Can you imagine not getting it by then?

I can. We call them dummies.

I think he left his last job one step ahead of the termination.
B-b-b-b-b-but...... he's was gonna square 'em away with his massive 6th Grade education?!?!

How could that happen?

Objection, your honor. Facts, not in evidence.

Talk about "Lord of the Flies"
William Golding could have based his book on those DUmmies.

OK you got me there. Objection sustained. H5! :cheersmate:

That is an unfortunate symptom of primitivia. My FIL is a huge one, he would come home complaining about how stupid his management was. This went on for years and years, but there he remained, mired in production, struggling to get by. He was so proud of being the smartest one there, in his mind anyway.

Well, the closest thing we've had to that was the jury system, and look how that worked out. :-)

Which iteration of the jury system? The whole cluster**** "rules" at the DUmp is impossible to articulate. Probably way too high level for most DUmp monkeys to evaluate & comprehend.

I would pay half of year's salary just to be a fly on the wall in the dummie utopia courtroom. Pay a year if I could record it for posterity. :cheersmate:

DUmmy utopia courtroom? OJ's criminal trial. Jury of his peers.

And if you were a DUmmie you'd have to ask for change back on your $5 bill.

The "DUmmie Utopia Courtroom" would resemble one of the "People's Court" trials in the wake of the asassination attempt on Hitler. :whistling:

Whaddya mean? The Jury system is ]b]DUtopia[/b]! They just need to tweak it a little and do it right.
