EMAILS: KEY SECURITY FEATURES DISABLED ON CLINTON'S SERVER
Source: Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Newly released emails show State Department staffers wrestled in December 2010 over a serious technical problem with then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's home email server. They temporarily disabled security features, which left the server more vulnerable to hackers. Weeks later, hackers attacked the server so seriously it was shut down.
The more I see what was going on, and the more I see references to "State Department staffers" who caused these problems, the more I'm convinced that its possible Bush-era holdovers in the State Department willfully put Secretary Clinton's server and communications at risk. It would be interesting to know who these staffers are, and their backgrounds.

4. It's really the only explanation I can come up with
Secretary Clinton is one of the smartest and most competent public servants we've ever have. But as SoS she didn't have time to worry about some email server. That's the purview of long-term SoS lackeys who may have been not so happy about some of the changes she was introducing.

53. except
Clinton did not use the U.S. Department of State's IT Staff to manage emails sent or received via her private servers, she brought her own person in, gave them a political appointee job, and they manged her server. But it's Bush leftovers LOL.

Akicita (858 posts)I wonder if her private server was infected and the email she was sending was loaded with malware. The State Department's anti-virus software was probably whacking the infected email as it came in. Hillary then threw a fit (and some lamps and ashtrays) and had the State Department turn off their anti-virus so her emails could go thru.
56. Even worse. Problems with Hillary's private server caused the SD to disable security features on the
SD's government system making it more vulnerable to attack. Not clear from the article if the security features were disabled for weeks.
"State Department staffers wrestled for weeks in December 2010 over a serious technical problem that affected emails from then-Secretary Hillary Clinton's home email server, causing them to temporarily disable security features on the government's own systems, according to emails released Wednesday."

I have always faulted the IT department for this debacle. The technical issues are the sole responsibility of the IT staff. Always has been, always will be. The end user is responsible once the content has been delivered but not until.

51. State Dept. IT has nothing to do with this. Clinton hired her own "techie".
To set up the email server in her house.
She gave him a special appointed position at State in the IT group. State IT wondered who the hell he was.
Any incompetence is on her and her hired help's heads.
NSA told her "no" on having a secure Blackberry like Obama's and she went her own way setting up her own personal email scheme.

Wouldn't surprise me.. Even though Bubba claims ignorance involving computers and EMail - we all know he knows what the internet is for..

Now that song will be in my head all morning!
It took 56 responses on that thread for some one to notice and point out one of the most critical facts in the AP article "philosslayer" linked?!!! (http://bigstory.ap.org/article/7006105d422740f0b4b8675c90f9a154/emails-key-security-features-disabled-clintons-server) It wasn't just The SHREW's email server that was almost wide open to hackers! And the AP article, as it currently stands, does not say for how many days or weeks or ???? the relevant State Department servers were wide open to hackers.
Ummmm, no, Part 1: State Department IT people did not set up or control The SHREW's email server.
Ummmm, no, Part 2: The State Department IT people who disabled security on State Department servers did so at the "request" of The Mouth of The SHREW, Huma.
I'm trying to figure out what malware scanners have to do with 2 SMTP servers not being able to communicate. I seriously doubt this is what was affected. When private orgs want secure email, both sides must setup and enable TLS (Transport Layer Encryption) so that the SMTP transmissions are encrypted where private tunneling is not available. I'd be willing to lay money down that is what was going on here. The moron who setup her server couldn't get TLS to shake hands with the SD server, or he couldn't get through the SD red tape to get the right people to coordinate and they gave up and disabled it... leaving transmissions being relayed back in forth in plain text format. And that IS a very serious security issue. Cankles malware scanner doesn't have a damned thing to do with the State Departments external facing email servers.
But I guess "philosslayer"'s need for a bogeyman to blame-shift overrides reality.
ETA: In fairness to "philosslayer" - a fairness he would not extend to this "Fundamentalist" "Gopper" - in the initial version of the article, the AP got a key fact wrong. The AP initially reported that security was disabled on The SHREW's email server, not - as was the case - on the State Department's server. The MSM getting a key fact totally wrong? Who'd athunk it?!
