ABC News Afghanistan correspondent: "Traveling any where in Afghanistan is not safe these days"

http://blogs.abcnews.com/theworldnewser/2008/07/the-oth...

<snip>

We got this note about safety in Afghanistan (or lack thereof) from our top Kabul staffer: "Travelling any where in Afghanistan is not safe these days. Even places where we went in the past, such as Maidan Wardak, which is 20 miles from Kabul, are not safe. There are many threats from insurgents and of course kidnappers who are always looking for soft targets, such as people working for the media and Non Governmental Organizations. The road to Jalalabad was among the safest roads in the past, but now there are daily clashes between Taliban and police there. From time to time, members of the Taliban set up check points, looking to kidnap people working with the government and foreign agencies, Afghan staff included."

You know, I have a question.

WHEN has travel in Afghanistan ever been safe?

Highwaymen, brigands, kidnappers, random itinerant thieves and murderers, clans, have dominated Afghanistan since the beginning of time.  Afghanistan has never been safe for travelers.

Never.

So what's the big deal?

1. That's misleading, it seems perfectly safe for the Taliban.

Okay, now comes in the stupidest person on the whole entire internet:

2. Translation. Taleban: Afghans who want control of their country back.

You know, I'd seriously consider giving Afghanistan back to the Taliban if they took Doug's ex-wife in the bargain.

I bet Doug's ex-wife would get along peachy-keen with the Taliban.

It's been 50 years ....but how does it go

Half a league, half a league, half a league onward

Into the valley of death rode the six hundred

HEY DUMMIES! Things haven't changed much in 200 years.

I wonder if SFexPat has ever watched or read "The Kite Runner".  Movie had tears in my eyes at the end of it.  I doubt she'd still be singing that tune if she watched it.

I thought it was a reference to the Crimean War, but let it go.  JohnnyReb caught the spirit of it.
