Any tips for someone over 55 looking for work?

I took early retirement thinking we could do it, well we can't. Our insurance, out of pocket medical and everything else except gasoline have gone up so much I need to get something to help us get by. I have applied for all kinds of jobs, except Walmart greeter, I get interviewed sometimes, but always hear I am overqualified.

I don't want another "professional job" like I had at the University. I don't think I could take the stress anymore. I can't even get a retail job which seems nuts to me.

Has anyone been successful getting something, anything as an "old person"

If you want help getting on the dole the DUmp is the place to be. Do not ask for job advice.

Found the problem. You need to apply to be a Walmart greeter.

If what you had before was a "profession job at a University", that would mean you are under qualified to be a Walmart greeter, but maybe they'll give you a shot.

I would think that at 55, that should be your entrepreneurial age.  You've proved you can work every day. You've probably got vast amounts of experience in both the job market and you've explored your loves and interests via hobbies and crafts.

You should practically be able to hang a shingle, possibly one you've made yourself in your craft shop.

Or maybe you could just apply with Soros and be a paid shill on discussion boards.

Does anybody know what this DUmmie did in his job life? Maybe we could help him or her set up shop?

On edit: I guess I should have looked at the DUmmie's name before posting and I would have known she was a 55 year old girl (That's triggering to many liberals, redstatebluegirl, fyi, you might get spat upon by a triggered millennial).

Over qualified usually means you are asking to much for your starting salary/wage.

If you are still looking for a job, I hear Bernie is paying people $15 an hour to protest Trump.

To their credit, the DUmmies had some useful and supportive advice, except for one, who told her to "go to truckdriving school, even though the first two years are going to suck big time."  She's a retired university instructor.

She could be an Uber driver or something else in the gig economy.  If anyone is wondering what the gig economy is, it's what they used to call low wage temporary hamburger flipper service industry jobs but that was back during republican administrations.  Now they call it the gig economy so poor schmucks can feel like rockstars or something and maybe won't blame Barry for their plight.  I read about it in a Time or Newsweek or some other leftist rag I skimmed through at the dentist office the other day.

All these wonderful jobs created by Obama, used to be called "McJobs". Now they are a thing of wonder.

Or that she'll quickly leave for a better job, thus costing $$ in training but not producing enough to pay for that training.

If she's really fine with a job that is much less than for what she's qualified she should tone her resume way down.

She could save on the truck schooling by hiring rsmithnumbers as an instructor.

He's an ace at the forward gears after three years in trucker school and multiple failed attempts at a license (he always crashed into the loading dock).

And whatever happened to him?

His trucking career was set to take off (forward only), and he was on the verge of making it big in politics, and then he just disappeared.

I think the real problem is that the resume shows her cloistered for so many years at the university.  An environment that includes concepts like trigger warnings and safe spaces.  She mentioned that a lot of her "instruction" involved things like self-esteem.  Any business worth its salt will run, not walk away.  Who knows what litigious nightmare lurks around the corner?  In light of the last line on comment 3153 referenced above, that just may be the case.

12. Definitely go with a max of
ten years back in experience. I'm staring 60 in the face and I have been in the job search merry-go-round since I got my masters' on 10/11/01, and I hate it. I live in poverty but I am at least able to keep a roof over my head, shoddy as it is, and am constantly in a state of perpetual job search.

Face it primitives, your situations are hopeless.  Go ahead and and get all the college you care to go on the hook for and wear your finest clothes to the interview, you're still not going to get the job.  No matter how well they clean themselves up and no matter how thick they lay down the BS, the HR people must be able to spot primitives for what they are from a mile off.

A TV in the waiting room tuned to Fox News, and an unattended remote control, quickly weeds them out.

At age 56, i was forced to change occupations. I ran a foot-race with the grim reaper and beat him to the hospital by about 5 minutes, so i am told. Five days in ICU, 12 days on the cardiac ward, and an Implanted Cardiac Defibrilator, I had to change occupations.

I was an electrician and a SCADA tech, making just under $20/hr. After the problems, I could not get near live electrical circcuits or strong magnetic fields.

I applied at a number of places, got hired on at Home Depot in the electrical department, and am celebrating 10 years there this month.

A career change CAN be done if one wants to do it.

At the 15-year mark, it might be time to reflect on that education. Maybe there was a poor decision somewhere along the line.

I turn 57 next Tuesday. People love me until they hear I'm old. I can still freelance over the interwebs, but people don't want old people. At my last job I made 97k. Now they want kids who will work for 12/hr. I'll probably never have a real job again.

Like more than a few democrats, including his idol Pitt, McGrath lives off the toil of his wife.

Even before he was fired from Mission Control for spending so much company time at the DUmp, he never did more than play around with cartooning, a dubious art form at which he has no significant skill.

As for $97K, his previous entry level job at a political junk mail mill maybe paid him that in two or three years.

He might fare better at job interviews if he invested some of his wife's dough in a better-fitting suit.
