30% of all healthcare spending is waste...$750B a year..more than the military budget
and more than the nation's K-12 education budget...

The biggest chunk of waste is from unnecessary medical tests, procedures, drugs etc...

Overkill
An avalanche of unnecessary medical care is harming patients physically and financially. What can we do about it?

1. Like the doctors that give antibiotics...

for sore throats without a test! They need to be put in prison. They're making everything worse for all of us by deciding to increase bacterial resistance. I guess it's good for business is why they keep doing it.

That's because idiots like you demand a pill to cure them.

6. This has been known for years.

The private insurance bureaucracy has led to so much pointless nonsense. This article is missing a big part of the picture.

Yeah, like lawyers and idiots looking for a quick payday in a malpractice suit. It's called defensive medicine.

It's not a large bonfire, but the DUmmies want to blame rich doctors, healthcare companies and the insurance companies. They are the first to scream about tort reform as a means to lower medical costs. Eff them.

Doesn't fit the Romper Room narrative.

Their self imposed idiocy and delusion is astounding.

All the data is there, but they choose to believe that driven by blinding envy and the quest for increased sloth.

:bird: you, Idiots.  Die.  Starve.  Take the blue pill.

They really don't understand the nature of diagnosing problems, whether mechanical, electronic, or in the human body. Often it does involve exploring with tests possibilities that are not the cause of the problem. I work in electronics. Much of my time is spent devising and carrying out tests to determine the cause of problems, and sometimes replacing parts to see if that fixes the problem. It's sort of analogous, except the human body is vastly more complex than a high voltage power supply for a microwave amplifier. Oh! And the equipment I work on can't sue me for millions of dollars - like th4 said, I don't need to perform tests for the sake of defensive medicine.

 :bouncy: time!

A guy walks in to see his doctor, and says, "Doc, when I stand up quickly, I get a blinding headache that lasts for a second or two." Doctor orders a very expensive MRI. Was this wasteful?

His wife, several years later, complains to the same doctor of headaches centered in a certain part of her head that seem to be triggered by certain strong odors. Doctor orders a very expensive MRI. Was this wasteful? Hypochondria? Insurance fraud?

My MRI found a brain tumor (I know, explains a lot), and I had surgery 6 days later. My wife's MRI found ................. a brain tumor, and surgery was done soon after. Those MRIs could just as easily found nothing; another way of saying that, though, is that those MRIs could have just eliminated dangerous possibilities. My point (I do have one) is than "wasteful" is a very slippery term in this context, the meaning changing with hindsight and agenda.

And ........ another :bouncy: ...

Our daughter had a cough that had lasted, continuously, for 3 or 4 weeks. Her pediatrician told us it was just our poor memory, that it was 2 or 3 colds, but we forgot about the intervals between, We took our daughter to our regular physician (on a Friday), who looked at her, did a throat culture, and prescribed an antibiotic. Was the antibiotic wasteful, placating demanding parents? By the time we learned, the following Monday, that the throat culture was positive the cough was gone.

The times antibiotics are prescribed to placate demanding patients are both real and narrative-grade. The times the prescription works before test results are known are also real, but don't make it into agendized narratives.

I'm going to stick my neck out a very little and speculate - diagnose? - that a good number of you all could post very similar :bouncy: s.

I was reading an interesting editorial the other day which makes some interesting observations along this line.  Unfortunately it is a pay site (Barrons)so I will only grab a few excerpts to share:

A Funding Mess in the Medicaid Program
Medicaid is a mess for many reasons, but one that’s often missed is the way the states send the federal government the bill.

No player can win at the street game of three-card monte because the card the mark is looking for isn’t there at all. The card sharp running the game palmed it and laid down another one from his sleeve. Or maybe he switched a black card for the red card as he put the cards on the table. The dealer can’t lose.{snip}

Medicaid is also inefficient: Even though it pays less for a given procedure than the average for private health insurance, the providers make it up on volume. Medicaid spending per beneficiary is 40% greater than spending per beneficiary of private insurance.
After several major expansions of eligibility, the Medicaid program now has more than 70 million beneficiaries, which is more than 20% of the U.S. population.
{snip}

Additional problems in the Medicaid program, such as $20 billion a year of improper payments, should also receive attention and reform. But mistakes and outright fraud are harder to detect than the Medicaid provider tax scam. It’s deliberately written into the laws and regulations, and it also costs about $20 billion a year.
As President Barack Obama said about a different problem, “It’s time to stop doing stupid stuff.”

To paraphrase a wise man:  "A billion here, a billion there, and before you know it you are talking about some real money."

O'Bumbler Care didn't fix squat. Odumber-than-a-box-of-rocks only said that it should save. But, like everything he has said, it was a lie.

From the Wikipedia article: (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everett_Dirksen)

Quote
Everett McKinley Dirksen (January 4, 1896 – September 7, 1969) was an American politician of the Republican Party. He represented Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives (1933–1949) and U.S. Senate (1951–1969).

As Senate Minority Leader for a decade, he played a highly visible and key role in the politics of the 1960s, including helping to write and pass the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and 1968, both landmarks of civil rights legislation.

When we point out to Libs & Progs the fact that the Rs were key in passing the Civil Rights Acts we are referring to Dirksen's work.

There is a lot of wasteful healthcare spending on unnecessary tests, procedures, surgeries, and drugs.

But it's not wasteful when your doctor says YOU need it.

A death panel at Obamacare headquarters may say you're gonna die anyway and refuse to approve the treatment.

By that criterion, since all people die, all healthcare spending wasteful.

Who should decide what is necessary healthcare, a death panel, or you and your doctor?

Says he, "will never take Obama care patients".

I had to go to the doctor last week.  Since my employer switched insurance plans, I got grilled on exactly who was paying for my current insurance after I mentioned "United".
