I wouldn't call it "sad."

Seriously, the big guy has a grievously overinflated estimation of himself and his worth to other people.

The big guy's dying, and it would be good if he confronted, faced, himself before that ultimate event.

If he can come to understand he's not nearly as great as he's always imagined himself, it'll be easier for him when the Grim Reaper knocks on the door.
