Title: Kentucky Sen. Paul suspends presidential campaign
Post by: txradioguy on February 03, 2016, 08:27:20 AM
Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul suspended his Republican presidential campaign on Wednesday, after finishing fifth in the leadoff Iowa caucuses.

Though Paul exceeded expectations by placing fifth in the Iowa contest, Fox News is told he did not believe his campaign had the momentum to build upon going into the New Hampshire primary next week.

The libertarian-leaning senator made the decision official in a brief statement.

"It's been an incredible honor to run a principled campaign for the White House. Today, I will end where I began, ready and willing to fight for the cause of Liberty,” he said. “Across the country thousands upon thousands of young people flocked to our message of limited government, privacy, criminal justice reform and a reasonable foreign policy. Brushfires of Liberty were ignited, and those will carry on, as will I.

“Although, today I will suspend my campaign for President, the fight is far from over. I will continue to carry the torch for Liberty in the United States Senate and I look forward to earning the privilege to represent the people of Kentucky for another term."

It is unfortunate.  I would have much rather seen Rand climb in the polls than Rubio.  It will be interesting to see who if anyone, he throws his support to.

If I had to guess, it would be Rubio, if only to stay out of McConnel's crosshairs. The Establishment will start to coalesce around Rubio in any case.

That would imply that Rand Paul is afraid of McConnell. I'm not so sure that's the case.

I can see that Rand simply won't endorse anybody else until it's politically expedient for him to do so -- that's the smart thing for him to do.

I do agree that Rubio is the establishment GOP's selection, in lieu of Jeb!.

I read where he is hoping his supporters will go to anyone but Trump.

I could see him giving his support to Cruz.

I think a lot of Huckabee's and Santorum's people gravitating towards Cruz. I think that Trump has got all the people he's going to get and everyone else's supporters will line up with those remaining until there is one.

...hmmm...Santorum and Huckabee attended Trump's non-debate event, so I would place bets that they will endorse Trump (hoping that he just may pick them as their VP).  If Paul endorses anyone, I think it would probably be Cruz; they've been allies in the Senate and I believe that the families have known one another for awhile; seeing that Rand's father was a TX Rep.

Santorum and Huckabee only got a couple of percentage points in the polls, so I don't think their support for Trump is going to be that big of a gain.  However, Rand polled around 5% and I think that will be a help to Cruz.

Agreed... I can't really see Paul supporters going anywhere but Cruz.
