Colorado pot grows used as much energy as 35,000 homes in 2014

Legal cannabis is emerging as one of the nation's most power-hungry industries
By Jennifer Oldham
Bloomberg News
POSTED: 12/21/2015
The $3.5 billion U.S. cannabis market is emerging as one of the nation's most power-hungry industries, with the 24-hour demands of thousands of indoor growing sites taxing aging electricity grids and unraveling hard-earned gains in energy conservation.
Without design standards or efficient equipment, the facilities in the 23 states where marijuana is legal are responsible for greenhouse-gas emissions almost equal to those of every car, home and business in New Hampshire. While reams of regulations cover issues from tracking individual plants to package labeling to advertising, they lack requirements to reduce energy waste.
Some operations have blown out transformers, resulting in fires. Others rely on pollution-belching diesel generators to avoid hooking into the grid. And demand could intensify in 2017 if advocates succeed in legalizing the drug for recreational use in several states, including California and Nevada.
~ snip ~
"Consumers seeking a green lifestyle are likely unaware that their cannabis use could cancel out their otherwise low-carbon footprint," Evan Mills, a senior scientist for California's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, wrote in an e-mail.
~ snip ~
I bet if people quit smoking marijuana, outside of true medical need, they would reduce greenhouse gasses and have even more money to spend feeding the poor, than if people quit buying and putting up Christmas lights.

3. Isn't that special?
Hippy-punching has a new meme to barf out.
You should be ever-so-****ing proud.
Pot smoking is legal in Colorado, and isn't going stop being so.
Get over your troglodyte concern.
Hippy punching could be the 5th major sport now that I think about it.

13. Christmas lights... good or bad?
According to a thread in LBN, if you enjoy the sight of multicolored lights, you are an awful person trying to destroy the world.

54. That's also very special.
What the **** does it have to do with Colorado acting like a reasonable society in regards to a safe, harmless, recreational herb that the people of that state want to enjoy in their own homes? Got the stats on how much "energy is wasted" brewing beer, fermenting wine, and distilling the millions of bottles of alcoholic spirits in any given year? Or is your religious "outrage" limited to throwing rocks at those dirty pot-smoking hippies?
I thought you stoners were supposed to be mellow.

All the while big corporations are raping the earth. We have a huge methane leak here in Porter Ranch Ca. It will take those assholes 4 months to stop the leak. Why must we be at risk while big corp gets a pass to fix this huge bomb in 4 months. If a big enough spark hits, it's KABOOM!
Hemp grown outdoors cleans the air and I'm sure MJ grown outdoors does the same. Hemp could clothe people. MJ cures people. They could use solar to grow. This is just another stupid story to shade pot as something bad. People are desperate.
Selfish bitch.

global warming climate change... until it affects something their precious fat asses want. Then all bets are off. Same as taxes.
This has potential to wire the dump up into one heck of a free for all... stoners vs greenies.

The Dummies barely touched the surface..
Wait until they find out how much water 'Big Pot" demands.... Large scale operations practically need to divert entire rivers through their crops.

Something this DUmbass isn't saying, I guess it's just not convenient. :-)

Tons Of Methane Are Spewing Out Of California, And There’s A Connection To The Governor (http://www.buzzfeed.com/jimdalrympleii/sister-of-climate-hero-jerry-brown-is-overseeing-a-mind-bogg#.meZ2lYrAo)
LOS ANGELES — A massive gas leak that has spewed billions of pounds of methane into the air in a northern Los Angeles neighborhood, prompting a state of emergency from local officials, has a surprising connection to Governor Jerry Brown.
snipped
Gov. Brown has a number of connections to Sempra. His sister, Kathleen Brown, sits on Sempra’s board of directors. She joined the company in 2013, reportedly receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and equity. She also holds $400,000 in stock and last year received a $188,380 salary, the Associated Press reported.

Every little bit, DUmbass. Do your part.

Something this DUmbass isn't saying, I guess it's just not convenient. :-)
More from that article about Moonbeam's conflict of interest:
But Gov. Brown’s connection to Sempra goes even deeper. Campaign finance records show that Brown has received tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from Sempra and Sempra employees going back to at least 2006.
Brown also appointed two high-ranking Sempra representatives to a 2014 trade mission to Mexico.
...
For many governors, maintaining a relationship with a prominent energy company might not raise eyebrows.
Brown, however, is different. The Golden State governor spent the year touting his green credentials and has specifically singled out methane — the gas leaking near Porter Ranch — as a greenhouse emission he wants to cut. Earlier this month he also was a star attendee at the Paris climate conference — a global gathering that explicitly aimed to curb greenhouse gas emissions.
BTW, his sister Kathleen also ran for Governor back in the 80s or 90s ... not as a D ... and was defeated.
Re the gas leak, it is as big a mess as Pb stated, BUT the eeeeeeeevile "big corp" is not getting "a pass". It's not an "easily" fixed pipeline leak, it's a damaged well, i.e. the damage is somewhere in the earth. IOW, it's vastly more complicated than shutting off a branch of pipeline and replacing a damaged section of pipe. I have a feeling that once the leak is fixed, Sempra and/or its subsidiary - depending on how the corporation is structured - will be sued into oblivion.
Notice Pb doesn't say much about the people of Porter Ranch who've been forced to move out of their homes. Much of it is a gated community, 1%ers or 2%ers, and the ethnic composition is >90% "white" and un-PC minorities. So (s)he only cares about Global Worming and weed ... lots of weed. Speaking of weed, I'm guessing that's what inspired Pb to bring up the gas leak, to divert attention from how the sudden ginormous increase in in weed production is creating an enviro-mess.

So it's not really about saving the planet for the libs. It's almost like there's an underlying agenda.

Yeah, they're all for sacrifice, as long as it doesn't affect anything they want to do. "Everything for King and Country. I say, do bring us another brandy, my good man, the good stuff if you please."

It's not the only thing libs want, but pot is certainly near the top of their wish list...
National Public Radio's evening news show All Things Considered eased into Christmas on December 23 by promoting a new Christmas song by soul singer Macy Gray asking for "free health care," gun control, legalized pot, and amnesty for illegal aliens.
The headline on NPR.org was "Macy Gray's Christmas Wish List Has A Few Surprises."
Add "To Delight Liberals."
MICHEL MARTIN:
Christmas is coming.
And by now you've probably heard all the standards, whether you want to or not - the chestnuts, the jingle bells, the usual deal.
But if you are looking for something different and your politics lean left, then Grammy-winning soul singer Macy Gray has something for you.
She's just released a new single that's getting buzz.
It's called "All I Want For Christmas."
And on her wish list for Santa are things like free health care, legalized marijuana, and more forgiving immigration policies.
Let's take a listen.
MACY GRAY: (Singing)
All I want for Christmas is a whole bunch of stuff.
But anything that you can buy me won't be enough 'cause everything I'm hoping for is intangible, like free health care and gun control.
If you want to make the world a better place, say all right, all right.
If you want a peaceful world for Christmas Day, say all right, all right.
Christmas is here.
The political lyrics included:
– “Bring the day the government will realize / we’ll be happier when it’s legalizedâ€
– “So immigrate, stop the hate, let’s educate/ The more we do, the less we will incarcerateâ€
– “All I want for Christmas is to have a chance / so please take care of the environmentâ€
– “Take Mr. Gore more seriously/ And do what you can to stop global warmingâ€
– “No matter what they say, Brack you did real good / I hope your successor does the things he or she shouldâ€
– “That Mr. Trump is an entertaining guy. But let's face it, really, is he qualified?â€
Martin asked how this song came about.
Gray said "I was wanting to write a new Christmas song, and, you know, there's plenty of Christmas songs about love and Santa Claus and - and stuff like that.
So my main thing was to just to come up with something different and fresh."
Martin asked Gray who she likes for president:
GRAY:
OK, so I love Bernie Sanders, but I'm a Hillary Clinton fan.
I think she'd be awesome.
And then if I had to pick a Republican, I would actually pick Jeb Bush (laughter).
But I said that the very first debate because he's the only one that sounds like he knows what's going on.
Like, if you really listen to him, he's the only one that, like, makes a little bit of sense up there, I swear.
MARTIN:
Sometimes, you know, when artists want to express themselves politically, people don't appreciate that. Have your fans had anything to say to you about it?
Or even fellow artists, what about them?
GRAY:
Yeah, everybody's had kind of a comment.
I got a lot of, like, you know, like, really right-wing crazy people on my Facebook.
You know, but it was, like, stuff that wasn't nice, which I wasn't expecting because the song is really - it just opens up a conversation.
It's just - if the world were perfect in my eyes, this is some of the stuff we would have -- free health care, there'd be no guns and blah, blah, blah.
To add further spice to the proceedings, Martin closed the interview by asking about Gray's summer song "BOB," described as an "epic love song to her vibrator."
But Martin stayed very coy about what this "female empowerment" device was:
MARTIN:
Well, before we let you go, I do want to ask about - you're on tour for your most recent album, "The Way."
One of the songs is about your fondness for an item that brings you joy.
It's battery-operated, if that's a clue.
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "B.O.B.")
GRAY: (Singing)
He fits like a glove, always up for love, steady like a caterpillar, rabbit from a hat.
He knows just where it's at.
Give me what I want, and I want that.
MARTIN:
What made you want to write a song about this intimate item?
GRAY:
Actually, in the weirdest way, in the wildest way, that song is about female empowerment.
MARTIN:
Okay (laughter).
GRAY:
It is.
It's about women being able to express their sexuality.
Like, if you're sitting with a man and he's talking about all the women he's been with
- but if a woman says something like that, then she's
- you know, she's not ladylike, oh, my God, you know what I'm saying?
So it's just kind of this song that invites us all to be on equal ground, at least while you're listening to the song.
It sounds equally dismissive of needing another human being for sex -- "let's be just as dismissive as the men who buy inflatable love partners."
Why is NPR bringing this up at Christmas time?
Leave it to airheaded blondes and NPR to use DU characters to advance their agenda.
