NEW YORK (Reuters) - Facing a crippling increase in fuel costs, some rural U.S. schools are mulling a solution born of the '70s oil crisis: a four-day week.
Cutting out one day of school has been the key to preserving educational programs and staff in parts of Kentucky, New Mexico and Minnesota, outweighing some parents' concerns about finding day-care for the day off.

I asked that question years ago when I was paying out the yazoo in county property taxes. I was in the tax assesors office having a fit about 65% of my tax dollar going to schools and I didn't have any kids. I told the head lady, "I don't have any kids in school". She says, "You still have to pay." I said, "I ain't never had any kids in school." She says, "You still have to pay." I said, "Hell, I don't even have any kids I don't know about in school." She says, "You still have to pay." This was right after me and the "X" split so I said, "Furthermore, come to think of it, I ain't even getting any __________(sex)." She laughed and said, "Well, I'm sorry to hear that but you still got to pay." :-)

It will never fly....you know why? Too many working parents who wouldn't have anywhere to send their kids on the "off" day. They will bitch up a storm about how inconvenient it is for them, and it will never work.

I think this might actually go over in the areas they talk about. Rural areas, with smaller schools are a hell of a lot different than the urban and suburban schools. Some of those kids are farmers kids, and others are families that have grown up in the areas. Smaller communities have many benefits that the cities lack. Safety and knowing your neighbors is high among them.
