Title: chronically helpless primitive about ready to give up

Oh my.

My heart of course goes out to all those decent and civilized people in desperate straits trying to make ends meet, but it hardly extends to those whose current miseries are a consequence of their voting habits the past 40+ years.  They voted for it.....thinking such things would only affect "other people," not they themselves.

So boo-hoo-hoo.

About ready to give up. One thing after another. Being a Senior is not fun.

I know, I should be happy to have reached the ripe old age of 74 but I am now overwhelmed.

The crappy SS check only goes so far. No Cost of Living increase this year. What the heck index does the government use. House taxes up over $400.00 per quarter, car insurance on my 10 year old car up $200.00, House insurance up about $300.00, Everything is up. I keep my situation to myself but those of you on SS will understand. $13,000.00 a year goes nowhere. I am now facing a Vet bill for my kitty at over $1,100.00.

Since I am a widow, my kitty is my daily company. I can not let her go unattended. I will charge the treatment and pay forever.

Got to love the "Golden Years". I sure am sick of soup, stew, hot dogs and baloney sandwiches.

!@#$%^&*()_+

1. FWIW, any cost of living would have been eaten by an increased Medicare deductible.

I am so sorry you do not live in a state with a homestead exemption law that lets you be exempt from property taxes.

Is there any way you can shop for lower house and car insurance? Do you have both with the same company?

Our insurance company threatened to drop us unless we put on a new roof. We knew we would have to replace it in a few years, but they gave us 6 months...huge hole in our emergency stash fund.

Quite honestly I could not afford a vet bill that large myself, and would have a hard decision to make on our elderly fur babies.

2. Received your 2016 Medicare Part "D" rates yet?

Mine with "Extra Help" went up 400%.

3. I empathize with you. My only income is soc sec, 11,000 a year

and you are right - it goes nowhere.

My cat died exactly one year ago. She had been sick for a while. I could not afford the tests let alone the treatment. So when it was clear that she was suffering, I decided to have her euthanized.

They charge $100-$200 to kill a cat! even when I told them I was a senior on a fixed-income.

The vet that I had gone to for 15 years with this cat would give be a 5% senior discount. Big deal!
this country sucks.

Fortunately my brother helped me out.

Otherwise what would one do- watch a beloved pet die slowly?

kill them yourself?

Now I have no cat. For the first time in my life. I want one SO bad. Every time I see a picture of a kitty my heart breaks. But I cannot afford it. I cannot pay for vet bills.

Good luck to you and your precious kitty.

ps- maybe try crowd-funder, I think it is called. It is when you go online and ask strangers to contribute $. A friend of mine did that for a huge vet bill, but --- she recieved a very small amount compared to what was needed.

Government-run retirement.

Enjoy your golden years.  It's what you asked for.

You realize that when you vote for free housing, free education, free healthcare, free sex-without-repercussions, free food and free vacation time that somebody has to pay for it.

Right?

That's why your taxes and costs go up but your benefits do not.

And now you don't have enough left over to try and change the system.

You should enjoy this. This is what you worked so hard to achieve.

Our state doesn't have one, but the city does.  It applies to residents over 65 who own their homes.

I don't think it's an exemption so much as it is a rate freeze.

And it allows them to pay NO taxes?  Seriously?  Our homestead exemption takes off a percentage and our over 65 exemption freezes your taxes at that point, but you still have to pay taxes.

No, I don't think so.  I think it simply states that your property tax rates won't rise after age 65.  I'm sure there are limits and rules in place such as how long you've lived in the home, but it's been a while since it was in the news.

we have it in Florida. It allows any home owner to exempt the first $25,000 of the value of their primary home from property taxes. The law was written when houses didn't cost so much so it is somewhat inadequate at significant reduction in the taxes paid on property.

11 Grand to fix the kitty-kat? What a waste. Replacement mouser would probably have been free, cats abound everywhere. See 'em all over the place when driving. Acquisition for adoption would cost the amount of the cheapest tuna/mackerel you can find, set out (open) along the road, retrieve yon feline. The animal shelter would cheaply immunize and neuter the damned thing.

Walla! Brand new eating and poop machine that will spend its days sleeping and ignoring you.

No one has answered. Look, read what the primitive wrote:

"a homestead exemption law that lets you be exempt from property taxes"

Exempt from property taxes. That means $0 in property taxes. End of story. Having to pay even $1 is not "exempt from property taxes."

This dixiegrrrrl idiot is just shooting off her stupid mouth about something that doesn't even exist.

We're going through the imposition of a residential property tax freeze in NYS that caps the rate of increase at 2.5% a year, IIRC.  My agency had 16 transfers from other divisions come in, and they're handling it.  I don't know what they'll do when it's done, but they work about 20 feet from me.

If only a super smart black progressive had been president the last seven years. All of those illegal aliens getting their free shit is going to put a strain on old white people that actually paid into SS. Oh well.

Hope and change, how is that working out for you?

One thing for sure, if there is a republican president in 2017 the MSM will be screaming at the top of their lungs how grandma and grandpa are starving and being kicked into the street.

Not to mention the number of homeless (which is ignored when a dem is president), will be the lead on many liberal MSM outlets ( :thatsright: what am I saying, they're ALL liberal) and will be blamed on the new Republican president.

We have a homestead exemption in Illinois, but it's not 100%.  Nowhere close.

In Dallas County, the Homestead Exemption subtracts $15K from the appraised value of the home for property tax purposes.  Many idiots won't take the 10 minutes it takes to file online.

The net for me was about $1,000 less in property taxes.
