WASHINGTON – President Obama vetoed a sweeping $612 billion defense policy bill Wednesday in a rebuke to congressional Republicans, and insisted they send him a better version that doesn't tie his hands on some of his top priorities.
In an unusual veto ceremony, Obama praised the bill for ensuring the military stays funded and making improvements on military retirement and cybersecurity. Yet he pointedly accused Republicans of resorting to "gimmicks" and prohibiting other changes needed to address modern security threats.
"Unfortunately, it falls woefully short," Obama said. "I'm going to be sending it back to Congress, and my message to them is very simple: Let's do this right."
The rare presidential veto marked the latest wrinkle in the ongoing fight between Obama and Republicans who control Congress over whether to increase federal spending — and how.
Four years after Congress passed and Obama signed into law strict, across-the-board spending limits, both parties are eager to bust through the caps for defense spending. But Obama has insisted that spending on domestic programs be raised at the same time, setting off a budget clash with Republicans that has yet to be resolved.
To side-step the budget caps, known in Washington as sequestration, lawmakers added an extra $38.3 billion to a separate account for wartime operations that is immune to the spending limits. The White House has dismissed that approach as a "gimmick" that fails to deal with the broader problem or provide long-term budget certainty for the Pentagon.
Obama also rejects the bill as written due to provisions making it harder for him to transfer suspected terror detainees out of the military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, a key campaign promise that Obama is hard-pressed to fulfill before his term ends. The White House has also expressed concerns over provisions preventing military base closures and funding equipment beyond what the military says it needs.
But Republicans lambasted Obama for prioritizing the domestic spending he seeks over the security of U.S. troops and the nation they protect.
"This is the worst possible time for an American president to veto their national defense bill, and especially to do so for arbitrary partisan reasons," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said on the Senate floor.

I agree TX, but then again the only thing this CINC has done has been to use the military for political reasons. So its no surprise he's doing it with the budget. :argh:

I do have to say that the Speaker and Majority leader in Congress right now deserve just as much blame for this happening as the guy who put his name on the veto. If they hadn't curled up into a fetal position early on then the Administration wouldn't have felt so emboldened as to do such a thing in the middle of all the threats we currently face around the world.

[LibSpeak] So, BHO threw a tantrum on the backs of the men and women serving in the military, especially those in combat in Afghanistan. Real classy! [/LibSpeak]

We Don't have 'leaders' in the republican party, we have politicians. They are just as culpable in this cluster@#$% of a defense policy as the libs are unfortunately.

That's not a thumb, and it's not theirs.

I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that this "butt monkey" of a president is out to destroy our country. Ripping our defense budget to shreds, making a "nuke deal", allowing Putin to advance and thumbing his nose at Israel has all been done to bring this country to its knees. Meanwhile, Congress has done absolutely nothing to stop him. Impeachment would have been the answer a couple of years ago. It may have not been successful, but it would have curtailed his agenda for awhile.

Well, the budget deal passed, & federal spending for defense & domestic programs will increase greater than $80B for the next 2 years. It also extends the debt ceiling through 3/2017.
It passed the Senate 63 to 35 & here's the vote tally. (http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=114&session=1&vote=00292)
Paul Winfree, Director of Economic Policy @ the Heritage Foundation: "It’s like watching a junkie line up his next billion fixes, while promising he has serious plans to get clean someday." (http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2015/10/28/old-budget-deal-splurge-now-save-later/)
Magical thinking: Today’s Congress is telling us they’ll spend an extra $122 billion now, blowing off all our hard-won spending caps like so many champagne corks… but four Congresses from now, the Washington sky will be filled with the fluttering wings of deficit hawks, and they’ll cut spending like crazy, just you wait and see!
I don't know how long ago the progressives played word games, & changed a tax to a fee. So the budget deal came up a mere $14 B short. No problem, for this spending like drunken sailor crowd, they'll just raise "fees" on corporate pension plans. & in true liberalism form of not for me, but for thee, their precious government pension plans remain untouched.
Senator Rand Paul: “We will be raising the debt ceiling in an unlimited fashion. We will be giving President Obama a free pass to borrow as much money as he can borrow in the last year of his office. No limit, no dollar limit. Here you go, President Obama. Spend what you want.
Senator Ted Cruz: "I've got to say, Leader McConnell has proven to be a very effective Democratic leader. With just 46 Democrats, the outcome is exactly what Harry Reid and the Democrats would want. Is this not a curious state of affairs? Why is a Republican majority leader fighting to accomplish the priorities of the Democratic minority.â€
Lastly, & finances being my big weakness, do I smell pork in this? President Obama: “This agreement will strengthen the middle class by investing in education, job training and basic research. It will keep us safe by investing in our national security." (http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2015/oct/30/senate-passes-debt-and-spending-hike-dead-night/)
Does this equate to:
- education = funding salaries & unions?
- job training = shovel ready jobs?
- basic research = more Solyndras & Chevy green cars?
- national security = forever middle eastern wars to fund the military industrial complex, shrink our military & continue to neglect our vets?
