At 100, woman still working 11 hours a day, 6 days a week
BUFFALO, N.Y. - Felimina Rotundo works 11 hours day, six days a week at a Buffalo laundromat and says she has no plans to quit working even though she turned 100 two months ago.
She tells WGRZ-TV that she got her first job at 15 during the Great Depression and has been working ever since.
Rotundo works from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. washing clothes and handling dry cleaning at the College Laundry Shoppe. She says she hasn't considered retirement and will continue working as long as her health is good.
............
She says too many people retire too soon. Her advice to her peers: "Get out and do some work."

2. No thanks, Granny
The republican ideal. Work until you die, and look down upon those who choose not to.

Primitives will need a way to stop people like her. Will call for a new mandatory retirement age.

Why do they care what this lady does? Such little dictators they are. Working this long keeps her mind fresh and gives her something to do then collect a check sitting at home like the DUmmies.

Had she retired at 65, I betcha she'd have been dead by 70.

That happened to my Grandpa. He retired in the summer of 1992 and by the end of 1993 he had a major stroke and passed away in 1998. Worked so hard all his life.

Socialism doesn't work if you let people have choices about their own lives. If they had their way they would institute a mandatory retirement age.

Exactly correct. It gives her a reason to get up in the morning. She gets her exercise, interacts with people, and just continues on. Once I reach that age, I hope I'm the same way.

I don't see where she's looking down on anyone. It seems she does it because she enjoys it and it keeps her active. I thought her comment about people retiring too soon had more to do with that then laziness.

11. there's got to be a middle ground between 66 hour weeks at 100 and 20 hour weeks at 50. although, at 52, the option you disparage as "lazy" sounds really good to me. where do I sign up?

26. Careful, those are fighting words around here.
Some people think that working past 50 is part of our "cult of work".

There's a picture of her over there, and she looks fantastic, with a beautiful smile. Hardy stock, those northern NYers. :-)

54. I'm with you, all the way
While some old folks find they lack structure and human contact after they retire and die quickly without them, they're often the people whose whole lives revolved around their jobs. The rest of us have found other things to do with our time and are grateful when we get to pursue them.
Besides, enough people who are retiring now are looking at having to work at least part time until they drop dead on the job thanks to Republicans taking any hope of a decent retirement away through years of robbing them of the fruits of their labor to enrich the 0.1%.
No Warpy. It's the democrats who tax us to death so that our take home pay is crap. And then they extract from that take home pay extortionate property taxes. The democrats.

79. Lots of people say they support the working class
But they have a lot of contempt for working people and the jobs they do.
It's sad and disgusting.

76. I don't find any work interesting. I teach adults and while I'm mostly ok in front of them it's the
whole getting to work I hate, the constant pain in my feet, dealing with admins, and just the general loss of my freedom. I've never liked a job. Not at all.
I even delivered pizzas myself like your son. Hated it too.
I think most of us have a millenial job interview horror story.

If it had been "get out there get some dope" and the reaction would have completely the opposite.

No doubt! The only work they considered worthy of their limited talents is scoring free stuff and getting on the government disability gravy train as Frank so eloquently puts it.

Firstly - good for her ! She is keeping herself active, which is probably helping to keep her alive.
Secondly - its a laundromat. If it provides basic service, she watches TV, socializes, makes change, and cleans lint traps. Maybe also sells detergent and bleach. If the laundromat has a wash/dry/fold service customer that day, then she puts a few loads. I'm certain that they have a maintenance guy who handles equipment maintenance/repairs. Anyway, the job isn't overly stressful physically, and is probably helping to provide her the right amount of exercise per day.

I look forward to working as long as I can. I love what I do for a living. Someone once said that "if you find a job you enjoy you'll never work a day in your life." I am in total agreement with this.

I tried to guess what the 4 letter word was before I clicked on the post. I was wrong. My first guess was J-O-B-S, but then I remembered that that is a 3 letter word.

Yeah.
As I recall that was a quote from Biden.
But it could easily have been something owebuma said.

To retire completely is to be dead. Life is like the towel you just used to soak up your latest spilled batch...you have to wring it out for all its worth.
