CBS Bans Ads for Dan Rather Movie 'Truth'
Source: Hollywood Reporter

CBS has refused to run advertising for Truth, the film starring Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford that revisits a painful episode in the network's past involving a discredited 2004 news story on former President George W. Bush's military service record.

CBS has denounced the movie, which opens Friday, as a disservice to the public and journalists.

<snip>

"That's a disservice not just to the public but to journalists across the world who go out every day and do everything within their power, sometimes at great risk to themselves, to get the story right," he said.

Truth is told from the points of view of Mapes and Rather, who left CBS News on bitter terms in 2006. He unsuccessfully sued the network and has complained of being "erased" from CBS history. Rather and Mapes have always contended that despite the discredited documents, the underlying story about Bush was true.

There must be something embarrassing for CBS to complain so loudly.

"Rolled Roy" seems unable/unwilling to see the much simpler reason CBS is refusing the ads: CBS doesn't was to advertise a movie that trashes CBS!"

What a shock!

CBS has blind squirrel moment.

You mean to tell me there's a lie too big for CBS to handle, and so they want nothing to do with it?

This is surely a "first."

Left CBS.  :whatever:

Makes it sound like they voluntarily left CBS as punishment to the network rather than what really happened with those two bozos begin thrown out never to have reputable work ever again.

Only because it blew up so bad that it publicly embarrassed them and they ended up in opposite legal corners from Mapes and Rather after trying to dissociate themselves from the two sources of the embarrassment.  Mapes and Rather did not go quietly, putting CBS into a 'Scorched earth, back to the Fatherland,' position, which means there is no going back now.

PS, Love 'The Mikado.'  Beautiful music and words, a delightful combination of blunt and delicately subtle humor.  And there are few women I've encountered who bring to mind the verse "Bow!  Bow!  To the Daughter-in-Law elect!'  Although full of superfluous modern British social commentary about the times, I greatly enjoyed the movie 'Topsy-Turvy,' which is about Gibert and Sullivan creating the show and getting it through opening night.

Thank you, sir, as I have fond memories of The Mikado myself; I used to use "I've got a little list" as a tool during speech therapy.  Of course I can't sing, but I can still recite it by heart.

The musical comedy's a great satire on self-important people.

SeeBS got their @$$es handed to them in a strong lesson that they and their fellow Alphabet-Soupers and print fellow-travellers no longer control the flow of information. Mapes' & Rather's screw-up, in the context of that year's election campaign and earlier Swift Boat Revelations were so egregious and so grossly obviously partisan that SeeBS was all but forced to can Mapes & Rather.

SeeBS gets no credit in my books, either for the canning of Mapes & Rather or for refusing to advertise a movie slamming them for so doing.

Well, it appears that they did learn from their lesson, and not advertise the humiliation they suffered.

The writers missed an opportunity. They should have named the movie "Truth"

Those on DU do not see the similarities between CBS banning advertising that supports a point of view contrary to their own and DU tombstoning people who post points of view contrary to DU's.
