No surprise here. Putin is going to do what he wants to do...he just didn't go over there to fight ISIS; that's been obvious since the beginning. He also knows that Obama won't do a damn thing! "No proxy war"...is the word from the White House.
Official: Russia ‘deliberately targeting’ US-backed forces in Syria
Moscow is "deliberately targeting" U.S.-backed forces in Syria as part of a military campaign that has killed up to 150 U.S.-trained rebels, a U.S. official told Fox News.
The claim comes as the U.S. and Russian militaries try to reach an agreement about flight safety in the skies over Syria. Officials from both countries are holding their third videoconference on the issue Wednesday, as U.S.-led coalition and Russian aircraft look to avoid collisions as they launch airstrikes into Syria.
But even as they try to "de-conflict," evidence is mounting that Russia's air campaign is targeting more than just the Islamic State.
"Putin is deliberately targeting our forces," a U.S. official, who is disappointed in the U.S. response to Russia, told Fox News.
"Our guys are fighting for their lives," said the official, estimating up to 150 CIA-trained moderate rebels have been killed by the Russians.
The Obama administration recently ended its troubled program to train select Syrian rebels, but has continued to equip the opposition. Over the weekend, the U.S. military airdropped 50 tons of small arms ammo and grenades in northern Syria.

Important topic for our times, libertybele. No excuse why I'm not more well read in this area.
My chief concern is that no Americans lose their lives over this.

Absolutely true. O has been compared to another appeaser. (http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2015/04/neville-chamberlain-and-barack-obama-the-similarities-run-deep.php)
It would be interesting to know the defection rate of the Syrian rebels. So I found this (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/syria/11882195/US-trained-Division-30-rebels-betrayed-US-and-hand-weapons-over-to-al-Qaedas-affiliate-in-Syria.html) and this. (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/us-backed-syria-rebels-routed-by-fighters-linked-to-al-qaeda/2014/11/02/7a8b1351-8fb7-4f7e-a477-66ec0a0aaf34_story.html)
How many U.S. troops are still in Syria, & why are we still arming Syrians? (http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/12/politics/syria-rebel-groups-ammunition-50-tons/) It wouldn't be because we've allotted $500 million to this endeavor in futility & padding the military industrial complex, would it?
The administration has learned nothing about toppling dictators, rebuilding & stamping our own brand of "democracy" on populations that don't want them. One only has to look @ our failures in Iraq, Egypt & now, Syria.

Yes ... the failures in the Middle East are abundant and alarming...but I am one who thinks that those failures have been very deliberate. Those failures are to help topple this country.

I am wondering how many times it would take to bomb all our so called allied forces in Syria when it's been reported we barely trained a few dozens of them? Doesn't matter what happens over there because with a supine RINO led Congress kow towing to a know nothing bleating, breathing animate asshole occupying the Oval office, we as a nation will do absolutely NOTHING to help ourselves, let alone any allies we might (incredibly) have hithertofore retained. :argh:
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/08/08/us-military-reconsidering-how-syrian-soldiers-it-has-trained-should-be-put-into/
So far, only 54 Syrian rebels have completed the U.S. training. Of those, at least one was killed last week and as many as five were captured by the Nusra Front militants who attacked the New Syrian Forces' compound. U.S. officials have also acknowledged that after the fight, which they said the Nusra Front lost, some of the New Syrian Forces left the area and not all have been accounted for. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

It's what I'd do if I was in Putin's shoes. Take out the smaller anti-Assad forces first, one by one, starting with any that have ties to the US to remove any residual US influence from underfoot. After these economy of force operations, and the enemy is reduced to a single group, neutralize it in turn by military/political means.

How many moderate/US backed groups were just ISIS fronts to begin with?

Not all, but despite what the eternally gullible McCain and Graham think, I'm sure every last one of them was completely penetrated if not outright co-opted by ISIS.

McCain is a senile old coot who should kick back and guzzle beer with his trophy heiress wife. He hasn't been any good for Arizona in all the time I've been here (12 years and counting). I don't know how he will get re-elected; no one I talk to likes him anymore although we still respect his war service. But, as my dear astute husband said, he milked that cow until the teats all shriveled up years ago and it's time to retire.
