Bernie Sanders: Don’t be shocked if my message resonates with Republicans

Sanders, the longest serving independent member of Congress in U.S. history, said that people should not be surprised to see Republicans cross over to support his campaign.

Though they may disagree with Sanders’ position on certain issues — abortion, gun control, same-sex marriage, etc. — working-class Republicans still need to send their children to college or have been hurt by the outsourcing of factory jobs to China, he said.

“Working-class Republicans are equally disgusted about a campaign finance system which allows billionaires now to buy elections,” Sanders continued. “So I think the message that we are bringing forth, that we have got to come together to say that Wall Street and corporate America cannot continue to dominate our political and economic life, that we need an economy that works for working families and not just the 1 percent — a lot of Republicans will respond to that as well.”

This is not the first time Sanders, a self-identified democratic socialist (who admires the economic systems of Scandinavian countries), has extended an olive branch to conservative voters to find common ground. He spoke at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., last month.

A virtually surefire way to appeal to Republicans would have been to attack Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton, but Sanders characteristically stuck to the issues at hand rather than flinging mud when confronted with the opportunity.

I believe this is a major reason as to why Bernie is the most electable candidate, the bulk of his message appeals across partisan, gender and racial lines

Bernie's biggest challenge has been exposure and name recognition, but that's changing for the better on an hourly basis.
Soooooo, apparently we in the GOP are about to support a socialist because we hate the 1% as much as an Occupier.

Hmmm, I really haven't picked up that vibe here. Help me out, guys. Have you seen an undertow of Bernie support among your GOP friends?

5. I just wish he could be a dictator for one year!

Really I do. Implement his policies the first year and then play the game the rest of the time. I really think you'd see an improved United States.

6. Without the slogans and buzz-words, many republicans find they're more librul than they thought

Bernie is great at speaking outside the propaganda bubble, and will open more and more eyes to true progressive values.

79. wishful thinking

...too many republicans are ignorant bigots.

Just what is a 'republican' anyways? Today's republican is a defense against progress; racial, economic, international. Xenophobic, racist, sexist, homophobic, warmongering...

This sounds like fantasy and I wonder if anyone here could actually agree with republicans who supposedly agree with Sanders. If they don't completely renounce their republicanism, they can go to hell.
Awww. Bigtree doesn't want to share victory with us. ^^

I would vote for Bernie...in the primary. Anything to get him to face a Republican who is not crazy, old and a socialist in the general election.

Keep in mind how the daily media barrage of how "extreme" the conservative base is just reflects the likely dread of having to put either Shillary or crazy Bernie up for President.

No one outside of my hyper-political family and friends even know who Bernie Sanders is. Most people aren't paying attention yet!!

While the R's have some housecleaning do do, it will be a cold day in hell before I support any D for Prez, much less a devout socialist

ETA:  this story is another example of how detached from reality most of these folks are

Agreed.  I can't believe (well, I can actually) Sanders is even getting the attention he is getting.  He is an unabashed Socialist, and the idiots in this country love him.  There is plenty of evidence in the history of the world that Socialism just does not work, yet some folks think where it has failed, it just wasn't taken FAR ENOUGH!

It's truly mind boggling how anyone that has even a modicum of common sense, and lives here in the US, could support this clown.

Wow! Sander is more delusional than even I have given him credit for being! Is there anything DU's Bernie-Bots wouldn't parrot as gospel if Bernie spoke it?

The bolded has been proven to be the least common thing in the world.  Having worked with a bunch of PhDs in the past, I can state with 100% certainty that, as the knowledge needed for said advanced degree trickles in one ear, common sense floods out the other ear at somewhere north of 3,000 psi.

I've been working, recently, on omitting the word "common" from the phrase "common sense". I'm no longer convinced that sense is common anymore. Sadly ...

Pretty unlikely.  But a lot of them might well stay home, depending on who the nominee turns out to be.  There are a couple of GOP candidates I could only vote for in the general if Hitlery was the nominee and it looked like she was going to win.

Crazy Uncle Bernie will be totally forgotten about in a few months. And probably in a mental home a year from now.

I can't fathom how they can tout themselves as intelligent and then go in the booth for the primaries and vote for any of them. It boggles my mind.

It's why God invented wine. Lots and lots of wine. Drink it, experience it. DUmmies are DUmmies. It will boggle your mind because, well, you're sane.

That might also happen to Hillary if Slow Joe Biden joins the race.

I respect Bernie, he is honest about what he wants.  That doesn't mean I agree with him or would vote for him.

I don't respect him, because I hate socialists.

The commenters at the yahoo story are just a little more sceptical than the DUmp denizens.

An H-5 for the alliterative use of "denizens", in an appropriate quip!
