This morning, when opening up a package of "Healthy Choices" brand 7-grain whole wheat bread, an end slice fell onto the floor in the kitchen.
This upset me mildly, because I like end slices; if I had my way, loaves of bread would have nothing but end slices. But that's just me; I prefer dry hard bread; in fact, I had taken leave of my senses when buying a couple of loaves of this particular stuff, because it never never never dries out so it's edible.
The cats, "hearing" the end piece plop onto the floor, came running into the kitchen; people food.
The cats here have sensitive ears.
Since the end piece fell on the floor, I had to toss it, but decided to crumple it up and put it in one of the cat food bowls full of Friskie's dry cat food.
The other cats ignored it--Hell, they never even had a chance at it--because little William, the newest cat here, the kitten some asshole in the big city had deposited inside my unlocked (bur windows about two inches open) automobile many weeks ago, vaccuumed it up, all of it.
I don't think there's anything in whole wheat bread especially dangerous for cats (or dogs).
Is William on his way to proper bowel management, or was this not wise to do?

is there nothing that isn't discussed or somehow mentioned on the internets?

Other than making him crap more than usual for a little while, it shouldn't really have any adverse effect.
-
Well...it won't kill him, but it isn't the best thing for him. Since cats are naturally carnivores, bread isn't something they would normally eat. But I don't think one piece of bread is going to do any major damage.
I would recommend against making it a regular thing, however, as giving human food to animals can lead to pancreatitis and diabetes.
-
When my Pumpkin was attacked by a chow dog, had surgery, then sewn up and left to live or die, she wouldn't eat. I got the idea to soak bread in milk. She ate it. It kept her strength up until she was more capable.
I don't think cereals and grains hurt any animal. Most cats turn their nose up at the thought just because it isn't meat.

he may get bloated but that's probably all. We had a dog that ate and entire loaf of bread off the counter. she was miserable for days but no lasting damage.

It was just a little end slice, nothing more.

Harmless, frank.
My big cat Stanley will eat a whole bowl of tortilla chips if we let him.
:lmao: :lmao:

As long as you butter it first, the cat will be fine.

I'm a heel fan myself. My favorite sandwich is tuna between two heels.

I like that also, as long as she washes her feet first.

Frank, it won't harm the cat. He'll feel extra fiber-y for a couple of days, but I wouldn't worry about it.

I don't think it'll even have that effect.
It was such a small end piece; the mechanical bread-slicer at the bakery must have been misaligned, and miscut.
I was surprised, though, that William so quickly snarfed it up the other cats never even got a chance to sniff it, to determine what it was.

Animals regulate themselves through diet. It could be he is lacking something in his diet. Possible? or perhaps the other cats are not allowing him to eat his fair share and he is just extra hungry.

I had a cat that ate a marble once. what was she compensating for? :-)

You know, I dunno.
All cats here have 24/7/365 access to Friskie's dry cat food and of course water.
They all don't chow down at the same time, so I suspect little William's getting his fair share.
In fact, it's a rare 24 hours when all of them are here, and accounted for; more like 72 hours, maybe.
But, as said many times before, although I'm not a cat person, this place is a paradise for cats; lots and lots and lots of terrain and nature all around them, no vehicular traffic, all sorts of wildlife--although I do worry when the bald eagles are around too much; I don't know for sure, but they look capable of carrying off a cat, like vultures.
It's probably nothing more than the lure of "people food."

Being your cat, she probably thought it was meat - you know, lost brain matter. :innocent:

Coach, the only thing I can think of is maybe William, before he was dropped into your lap by God working through said person who put him into your car, had the opportunity to eat a tunafish sandwich at one point or another. I'm still astounded at Oreo's ability to zoom in on newspapers that are on the computer desk, and plant her body down on it, usually when I'm on said computer. I figure that, when Oreo was a neglected kitten, she found newspapers to be dry and warm. As I type this, her well-fed mouth is crying out for more nourishment--she's got to wait until 4 PM EDT for that.

I guess he just likes bread...put some peanut butter on it....
-
Bondai, if you put peanut butter it, He'll be lickin' his chops a long while. For hours. I've done that with a cat of mine.

My dog loves peanut butter...of course he loves just about everything...fruit, cheese, crackers, beer, bourbon(yes he drinks it straight) Pancakes, eggs, milk. I have yet to find one thing he won't eat...he isn't picky. :-) You would think he would be as big as a house but he is a little bitty guy..... :lmao:

One of my cats likes to do a "carbo-loading" if I leave bagels out. Chews right through the bag and starts munching on them.
