What mental illness diagnoses should result in loss of right to posses a firearm?

I see a lot of talk about adding this to the background check process, but few specifics.

This should go well.

1. There is little correlation between mental illness and gun violence. Most mentally ill people aren't violent, and most violent people aren't mentally ill.

Better idea: background check fail, and loooooooong prohibition on gun ownership for anyone who's been busted for any act of violence, even if it's just getting in a bar brawl. Violence is a much stronger predictor of future violence.

3. Yet my understanding of the conventional wisdom Is that most of these mass killers were "mentally ill".

What gives?

4. it's there

The current nics background check denies sales to anyone ever committed for mental problems or found mentally defective by a court.

13. Yup, If you are a registered Puke, you should NOT be given a gun.

This from someone who owns and enjoys my guns. Not only do I think there should be background checks, I think it should be mandatory that you attend a class on the consequences of using that gun on anything other than paper.

Wrong thinking will be punished.

Does this primitive think that we are given guns, that they are handed out like obamaphones?

Unfortunately, the feds have been very lax in enforcing many gun laws that would prevent liberal crazies from owning guns. It's almost like Obama wants these mass murders to happens for some reason.

Without the mass murders, there would be no call for confiscation, registration or anything else. Anti-gun people have orgasms on national television when one of these shootings occur.

In my lime of work caring for mentally ill and retarded I encountered  psychiatrists and psychologists and I would not trust any of  them to diagnose illness.  That is to say  there has to be more proof than the word of one of these individuals who could claim mental illness if someone is depressed.

I like to use this example.  We could line five of these "professionals" up and get five different answers.  Then we have someone deciding to define mental illness  and removing guns from folks.  We are seeing senior citizens under fire  because they may be considered not able to handle their affairs.  Have any seen stories of some senior citizen going on killing sprees?  Other excuses have been made that a relative who may be "unstable" could use weapons so lets remove those guns.  How about taking guns when someone dies so that the relatives can not have them?
