What I Learned from 13 Years of Witnessing Violence in Federal Prisons
Vice has been putting out some very interesting articles about prison life the past couple days. It's leading up to Obamas interview with prisoners that will be featured on their show. If you're interesting in prisons & what goes on in them, these articles are worth a read.
Thirteen years ago, I pleaded guilty to an armed bank robbery that ended in a high-speed chase and shootout with the police. Since then, I've gone from a small, bum-**** county jail—where I spent all my time in isolation—to some of the most violent penitentiaries in the United States.
Behind these walls, I'm an oddity: a middle-class, educated, dreadlocked hippie. Navigating through a world where the wrong step could be my last has been mind-numbing. The horrors people hear about are very real in prison. Rapes, stabbings, murders—we've got it all. What people don't hear about is the interactions we have with the officers who make a living off our misery.
Everywhere I've been there's been good and bad cops—ones who have actually changed my point of view towards them, and the ones who bring it right back to where it is today.
When I first got locked up I had one thing on my mind: survival. I was a 130-pound, 23-year-old junkie who had never done any sort of stretch up to that point in my life. The longest amount of time I ever did behind bars was a nine-month county hit for marijuana trafficking out in Arizona when I was 19. With this arrest, I knew I'd graduated to the big time.

5. Moral of the story: Don't commit crime.
Prison sucks. If you don't want to go there, don't do crime.
If you do a crime and end up there...I don't care what happens to you.
I would be in favor of basic protections, like small cells with only ONE occupant. No roommates. I could see that.
A shower in your individual cell.
But beyond that...no luxuries, nothing special.

6. Its in our best interest to know what happens..
as many of these people are released back into society. Lucky, people are interested and are constantly looking to improve our prisons. But I'm super impressed with your black & white thinking.

8. Now I know, and I still don't care.
Criminals chose the prison life by committing crime. Their choice. They can live with it.
Daves Not Here Man (4,616 posts)
9. Yes. All criminals are the same.
Da Mannn (3,710 posts)
13. Lets see: they all committed crimes. YES! You're right.
Lets put them in prison.
It's really simple when you think about it.

each day?

16. If I speed I get a ticket. Rob a bank, go to jail.
Clue: You do not spend 13 years in prison for a speeding ticket.

10. You do realize...
that many inmates in prison are there because they're afflicted with psychological issues, right?
For a lot of them it involves things over which they have little to no control. So for them, it's not even a matter of "don't do the crime".
Da Mannn (3,710 posts)
12. Then we are protecting society from psychos by locking them up.

14. This is the not well thought out logic....
Those people are usually released. Prison abuse creates monsters.

17. Robbers, Rapists, Murderers.
Looks like they were pretty monstrous to begin with.

18. Clue
Just because you haven't been caught doing something doesn't mean you haven't and that you are better than others.
It's not just 'robbing banks' - based on the laws we probably all could get jail time for something.
There is no reason jail needs to be a dangerous place - the punishment is losing freedoms. You shouldn't have to worry about being raped, robbed, beaten in jail. That's not part of your sentence - and people who desire that are worse than the people who are in jail in most cases.
How about in addition to that ticket you get for speeding they throw in a beating? You wouldn't applaud that I am sure.

19. Jail is NOT something that can happen anytime to anyone
People in jail chose to be there by committing crimes.
All the people in jail are criminal types. Its no wonder they treat each other like crap, they criminals.
thats why jail sucks.
Bottom line: Speeding tickets are not the equivalent of a bank robbery (re: the OP).
your argument sucks.

If you do the crime, don't care that you were on drugs or whatever your excuse is, you do the time. Don't wanna do the time? Then do not commit the crime.
It is really very simple.

Typical Delusionista logic.

Oh yes, by all means, let them run free. Do you realize how many faux science Psychoanalysts we can get rid of? :cheersmate: Woo Hoo!!

Get in a gunfight with cops after robbing a bank: Proglodytes rush to your defense
Want to own a gun to protect yourself from criminals: Proglodytes want SWAT teams to break in your door, arrest you and confiscate your guns

23. Are you saying robbers, rapists and murderers are NOT monstrous?
perhaps you can define for us what is more monstrous than robbers rapists and murderers.
saundersnorvell (2,267 posts)
24. Every single first time offender wants to quietly do their
Time and get on with their life. Your beloved prison system puts people who only wish to do their time in impossible situations designed to result in their victimization all set up by ignorant ****s who share your "hang'em it'll teach'em a lesson" dumbass philosophy on criminal justice. Then these creations of your system who have either spent years being forcibly ass****ed or had to join a gang which requires him to launder their gambling money or die for the rest of their life are released into a neighborhood near you....stupidest shit ever....
Da Mannn (3,721 posts)
25. Wow. It must suck to be incarcerated with robbers, rapists, and murderers.
It is such a revelation to realize that a prison is full of evil people. Who would have thought that being locked up with bad people carried a different set of rules?
Maybe the lesson learned here is, Don't do crime if you're such a fragile flower.
*** Still no sympathy from me,
Da Mannn (3,722 posts)
26. and I am still waiting for your definition
for what is more monstrous than robbers rapists and murderers.
getting a liberal to answer a straight question is as difficult over there as it is here.

Well, that response is rated ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) . And, yeah. One doesn't get prison time for speeding. Probably not even overnight jail time, unless one is also DUI. Typical utterly non-equivalent moral equivalency argument.
Libs & Progs need to wrap what brains they have around a couple of basic facts. Society (imperfectly) uses jails and prisons to get people who have proven themselves dangerous off the streets. Jailers and prison guards are human beings: they aren't omni-present; they aren't omniscient; despite screening, they aren't all saintly; the offenders who are incarcerated don't instantaneously become saintly.
Libs & Progs are long on whining about imperfections - real and imagined - in jails and prisons, but rather quiet on realistic solutions.
And, no I haven't driven 20 mph over the speed limit. What does it say about the DU-member who posted that not-so-devastating non-equivalent moral equivalency argument that (s)he assumed that any/every honest person would have to answer, "Yes"?
-
A lot of DUers continue to abuse drugs and know jail is a real possibility for them. They just cannot comprehend that others simply do not share their fear that justice may soon come knocking for them.

IOW, those DU-folk think everyone else is just as much the yet uncaught criminal they are. A weird mental world ...
-
Alright, then lets round them all up and send them to a big island.
Then we'll call that island Australia.
Who's with me ?
-
I like the DUmmie's comment about the laws today making pretty much everyone a criminal. You do realize, DUmmy, that if everyone commits a crime, it only takes a change of prosecutorial priorities to incarcerate everyone? Does having a sword hanging over your head sound like freedom?

36. All you have are stereotypes
You know nothing about prison.
and the first time offenders you refer to? they are robbers, rapists and murderers.
They are not confused, or desperate. they are robbers, rapists and murderers. Time you learned that.
saundersnorvell (2,272 posts)
37. Don't forget the 50+% victimless drug offenders
20 years experience in over 40 prisons....keep pretending and lying to yourself...go to church to prove your piety all the while enjoying fantasies of prison rape whilst basking in mind numbing ignorance....
Da Mannn (3,732 posts)
38. AHAH! it comes out at last. DRUGS are the key!
Sorry, I have no sympathy for drug users either.
Don't do drugs and you won't go to prison with the robbers, rapists, and murderers. Wimpy druggies are their toys.
-
The truth...It burns them so.
saundersnorvell (2,275 posts)
40. You forgot the "victimless" part....piety has a way of attracting
Only the absolue stupidest shit stains among us...those who think other humans should be punished with sexual victimization....maybe, now that I think of it, the true monsters are those who enable (and infact kind of get off on) daily sexual torture...you know, those who say people deserve to be sexually abused.... what kind af a worthless ****wad could think such complete evil? Why the good Christians among us, that's who.....
Da Mannn (3,736 posts)
43. No such thing as "victimless" drug use
The user is always the victim. Jail is the best thing for a user, its a cold turkey vacation from drugs.
and besides,
Most drug users are arrested for associated crimes like robbery, burglary and the like.
No its not some invented piety. Its good for society to lock druggies away.
saundersnorvell (2,275 posts)
44. You have to be 80.....at least you think like an 80 year old...
Da Mannn (3,736 posts)
45. Nope, I'm 30 years younger. DON'T DO DRUGS
Stay outa Jail: Don't do drugs....or maybe you just might deserve what you get.
Being 50 means at least 30 more years of voting conservative...possibly MORE.
With liberals it all boils down to drug use. If they had any self control their lives would be 100% better. But no, they want special protection for drug offenders.
-
With illegal drugs, there is no victimless crime.
Every bit of the money involved becomes blood money.
Once that money gets into circulation within the cartel or syndicate, people are stabbed, shot, and killed for it.
The mules have to commit more crimes carrying it over the border.
The drugs and money are then up for grabs by competing gangs who are merciless.
I don't buy 1 word of the "victimless crime" assertions.

Not when gangs like MS-13, Bloods, Crips, etc. use drug money as the major source of funding...
