Some barn doors you might want to close like right now (internet security)
First off, google yourself, your name and city. If you pop up at the White Pages, remove yourself
https://support.whitepages.com/hc/en-us/articles/203263794-Remove-my-listing-from-Whitepages-
Second... how many of you are on Facebook? I see hands... many... ok, ok, put them down. Since most of you are likely using your name... yeah, yeah facebook policy... go to your profile and remove your city. Hell remove a lot of that profile like school you went to, books you have read, anything that might help somebody ID you.
If you have geo location enabled... disable it. It is likely enabled... and every time FB changes policies make sure you do that again. What that does is that when you post, it also posts where you are posting from. So if you are in Los Angeles on a business trip... people will know you are not in Charlestown.
You might want to get those privacy settings higher and let only FRIENDS see your account by the way. You are not paranoid, the world is out to get you.
You got kids.. do yourself and them a favor, do NOT post pictures of the little ones. I know everybody shares, but seriously, do not share photos of your kids. I run a paper for god sakes, and I can legally run photos of kids... in certain very specific circumstances, and I know we are unique this way. UNLESS the kid is at the center of the story... we crop them out, we take them out, we don't run them. I don't care if their parents share every little moment of the wee one, we just don't.
And if they go on social media monitor it.
If you go on vacation... do yourself a favor and DO NOT let the thieves know by posting that you are going on vacation. The same goes for twitter and the rest of social media; For old people, this is like when you did not suspend your paper delivery and they just piled up ok. That includes DU by the way.
For those of you who have a linkedin account... sheepishly raises hand... remove who your current employer is. Yup, if you do all the above, anybody looking for you can find you that way. You might want to consider the previous one I know the triple edge sword here, and HR, and why we all have linkedin, but...
If you still have a land line... unlisted is the way to go by the way.
Photobucket and the rest will actually have your name in the address string in every photo you post. It is like standard. So if you insist, have a nice account with a dummy name. The same goes for MOST blogs.
Most cameras these days have geotagging as well. This has to do with the GPS, disable it. So that information will not be in the metadata. You are not media, you are not law enforcement, you know you were in London... for example... trust me, you do not need that geotagging. So when you upload to social media your great photos of your European vacation, or chiefly your backyard, people cannot pull that metadata. The data includes things like F-stops, date, time, and yes GPS. Anybody with access to google maps can enter that data into it and bingo... we know where your backyard is.
Reducing your presence online is certainly a possibility but that horse left the barn a while ago and we live in a world where it is easy to be found if somebody wants to find you regardless of reasons. So the best you can do is make it hard. If you make it hard then the identity thief (the most likely person to love you for all that info), will have to work hard, and will move to the next target that has not done any of this. The old idea of why people got dogs is exactly the same. A thief will not go after somebody who is making them work... on the other hand, if you hame it easy...
And most folks are far from aware of most of this, why I am sharing it.

5. I know you are just trying to help everyone, but
don't you think you're being a bit paranoid? I realize people can find me. So what? I like it when som old friend from years ago contacts me to say hi. Google earth shows most of our houses anyway. Maybe not the back yard, but it is in some google earth shots, especially if you live on a corner lot. I'm much more concerned about somebody hacking my CC info than I am about someone knowing where I am.

7. No actually I am not being paranoid
this is how identify thieves find people, and how many homes are broken into during vacation season.
Granted YOUR chances of this happening to you, or me, are astronomically small.
And for god sakes, I have posted under MY NAME for like ever. But some people did ask how to tighten their personal security. I am just letting them know. It is of course, your choice of how much... or little, you reveal.
I should add about that CC info... if they know where you live, identity thieves love that info, they can sit outside your home and tap into your wireless and wait for you to place that order at Amazon.
Not telling you to be afraid, but this is how a lot of this works for those lovely ID thieves. Granted, they will prefer to do that at the unsecured wi fi at the coffee shop you like to frequent and you took photographs of you and your friends.

Don't bend over and open your ass-cheeks wide on the 'net and run an unsecured daemon on that socket.

when many of us used our own name. That barn lost the whole herd a long time ago, but I still do not need to make it that easy, even if it is.

14. When you talk to your kids make sure they set your birthday
FB insists, to only you, None knows when my birthday is, and I still checked ten minutes ago.
Downside, none will know that your birthday is upcoming. But a birthday is something that ID thieves love, and is critical .

15. Fair advice,
but for some like me, no matter how often I try to help my dad (often un-**** his computer), he just can't resist installing *new*, *free*, *demo* etc stuff, nor does he ever read user agreements, or expand, read and uncheck installation options..... Then he gets embarrassed and blames it all on a virus.

More likely, DUmmy, you don't want the whole Internet to watch you molest the cat.

I guess she has added a new title to her many... :-)

You got kids.. do yourself and them a favor, do NOT post pictures of the little ones.
Given several DU members predilections, ceasing mention of them would be even more wise.
-
There was just a single reason that nutcase nadin kicked off this silly thread.
It was simply an excuse to write this:
I run a paper for god sakes
-

For the average DUmmie that would involve a trip to Planned Parenthood and asking if they have any photos after the procedure.

You realize that nads is preaching to a group of people who post every aspect of their lives for all the world to see. Every DUmmy who wallduded him/herself posted where they worked and boasted about the sabotage they did to their employers right at DU--in plain sight.
Does anyone think nad's advice will be heeded by the worst, most irresponsible people on the net?
I don't.
-
I looked at that whitepages site. Unless you want to pay to see what it actually says, it looks like bullshite.
-
Teh gNads wasn't dropped on her head after birth.
She was repeatedly thrown into the air.
Personally, I think the u-cord got hung up in the ceiling fan, and she was whipped around like a yoyo on a string.
-
I looked at that whitepages site. Unless you want to pay to see what it actually says, it looks like bullshite.
Yeah, my memory of looking at it once or twice was that if anyone wants useful information it's pay site. Which means that any DU member who wanted whatever info they have removed would have to pay to see whether it's worthwhile to have it removed.
It's very amusing to see this discussion happening among Libs & Progs who practically invented doxing people by way of the Internet.
-
This idiot has put her and her husbands identities and home address and phone number out there for at least the last 4 ******* years, not to mention photos and video of her mom and other relatives. Why in the hell would anyone think that she had a clue in regards to personal security?
-
I looked at that whitepages site. Unless you want to pay to see what it actually says, it looks like bullshite.
Plus to remove your name you have to register with your name and an email or use Facebook.
In other words you have to put more info into a database that could be hacked.
-
I looked at that whitepages site. Unless you want to pay to see what it actually says, it looks like bullshite.
It looks like it was set up to trap stupid people who are worried about their online behavior.
-
Ever since seeing this headline, I've been checking my zipper several times a day. That's the only barn door I worry about.
-
You have to give the nutcase credit.
Unlike any other DUmmy, when she starts a thread she'll hang around for days, replying to every comment, hoping to start a fight with someone.
On most of her threads, at least a third of the replies will be from her, and a some of them are pure nutcase nadin:

But as they say. YMWV
And this is just getting a dobbie, not going to prevent a really committed person from well stealing the crown jewels. I made it quite clear thank you very much.

We need a picture of the bald dwarf's head superimposed over Uncle Sam on the classic "I Want You" poster. I Want You To Keep Your Barn Door Closed!
Nads just doesn't seem to be satisfied with only looking like Ben Franklin anymore.

Nads is seeing hands. Is it her hands? Is she hallucinating? Has she drank some of UndergroundPanther's left over remote-viewing organic pineapple juice? This sounds like a hard hitting news story.
TRAINED HYSTERIAN WHO KNOWS EVERYTHING HAS SEEN HER HANDS!!!

Dobberman? Maybe it's an unintentional compound word. Let's break it down into its components, "dobber" and "man":
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=dobber
TOP DEFINITION
Dobber
Another name for the dick
2
Dobber
A male penis or a dildo
"look at the state of that dobber"
6
dobber
a dobber is a penis. Used in Glasgow and the surrounding places instead of saying 'Ya cock', ya dick etc.
Get tae **** ya dobber.
So nads is warning someone about the dick man? She says that's EXACTLY what she meant, so we have to take the extra "b" literally.
