This was nothing more than an all out assault on the referee because the 2 thug players perceived he made bad calls and racial slurs.

Two Texas football players accused of intentionally ramming into a referee during a high school game allege the referee directed racial slurs at them, school district officials said Tuesday.
...
Northside school district officials said that during the game, the suspended players "were feeling lots of frustration by what they perceived to be missed or wrong calls by the refs." The players also alleged the referee directed racial slurs at them.

1.) Playing the Race Card.
2.) Lying.
3.) Playing the Race Card.
4.) There is a proper way to handle such problems, were they real, and players would know that.

I don't empathize with our intrepid anti heroes.
I never got anywhere near that angry at a ref while playing.
Only while spectating.
But then again if what is being reported about their coaches directing their actions, i have never been in that situation either.
I would like to think I would have resisted their ill will and poor judgement.
Anyone remember a similar scene from "The Great Santini " ?
If you have never seen that movie it is an all time classic.

I've heard the, "Coach told us to," claim too. So what?! The players didn't have the sense to know it's wrong and tell their coach after the game, "We missed him," (if they lack the courage/sense to tell him, "No!" up front)?

I strongly suspect the 'Racial slurs' part is a total pantload, but even if it isn't, it does not excuse a serious criminal physical attack.

If one thinks about the, "coach told us to," and "racial slurs" narratives, they are pretty much inconsistent. If the ref was uttering the slurs quietly, so as to avoid being heard and later disciplined, how would the coach have heard him so as to tell the players to attack the ref? OTOH, if the slurs were loud enough for the coach to have heard them, there must be scores or hundreds of people who also heard the slurs ... but no one has complained other than the players who (apparently) are the ones making the accusation.
But whatever the case - coach instruction or slurs or both - attacking the ref was simply wrong. If the coach should also be disciplined or have legal charges filed against him, fine, do it. If the ref was uttering slurs, discipline him. The coach's or ref's (or both) wrongs don't justify or mitigate the wrong committed by the players.
