McDermott Proposes 'Gas Stamps' For Families In Need
POSTED: 6:34 pm PDT July 22, 2008
WASHINGTON -- Congressman Jim McDermott introduced legislation Tuesday to provide financial assistance to vulnerable Americans struggling to survive under high gasoline prices.
McDermott said that high fuel prices prompted him to propose $5 billion in emergency money to help those most affected.
The Emergency Gasoline Assistance Act would provide every family that is currently living below the federal poverty threshold with $500 in assistance. State governors would have the flexibility to use the money to create programs that target the specific needs of their communities.
The Congressman's office said the average American family will pay $1,000 more in fuel costs this year than last if gas prices remain unchanged.
The bill would give states the discretion to target families most in need of the gas subsidy, provided the gas is used primarily for transportation to work and child care.
McDermott said he'd like to see the proposal wrapped up into the next economic stimulus package.

Well, if it work's as well as the foodstamp program, the poor will be "high" and we'll be able to get our gas at half price or less.

My thoughts exactly. Every derelict (Well, every derelict with a D/L) will be signing up for his or her full share, and selling them at $.50 on the dollar, just like food stamps. Cheap gas for the crack dealers, wheeee!

so again, they wont let the US drill but they will spend 5 BILLION on gas stamps... i swear, every day in seattle is like being on the other side of the looking glass.. :banghead:

I would have thought Bagboy Jim would be more worried about how he was going to pay off that lawsuit he lost.

Aren't we making preparations to invade Iran?
Shouldn't McDermott be headed over to serve as a human shield or something?

Wheren't they just saying they want to raise taxes because their falling 9 billion short for road repairs?
So lets see... their 9 billion short, then they want to give 5 billion away, which puts them 14 billion short.
Sucks to be "rich" at the gas pumps...

A 3 month holiday from federal gasoline taxes for all users would have cost 9 billion. That was too much money according to the Congress critters but 5 billion is ok by loony McDermott. This gas stamp legislation will never see the light of day.
