The story doesn't quite tell the whole story. The church dropped them mostly because in the future they will be liable for any legal problems they encounter surrounding the question of homosexuality. The national BSA say the churches have the option of "Choice" of what they will allow. The national BSA will not aid them in any legal litigation they may encounter.

The Scout Troop my son was in just lost their Scoutmaster....and after 75 years it too will probably just fade away.

The scout troop in which my son earned eagle rank was also dropped by the sponsoring church. Many of the troop's Scouts were members of that church, and almost all of its adult leaders were as well. It was a demanding troop, and many Scouts earned Eagle rank while my son was a Scout, and in several years after. So many churches have dropped BSA, and there is a sword hqnging over BSA's head, the possibility of Mormon churches dropping BSA en masse.
