Rolling Stone: The Point of No Return: Climate Change Nightmares Are Already Here
Historians may look to 2015 as the year when shit really started hitting the fan. Some snapshots: In just the past few months, record-setting heat waves in Pakistan and India each killed more than 1,000 people. In Washington state's Olympic National Park, the rainforest caught fire for the first time in living memory. London reached 98 degrees Fahrenheit during the hottest July day ever recorded in the U.K.; The Guardian briefly had to pause its live blog of the heat wave because its computer servers overheated. In California, suffering from its worst drought in a millennium, a 50-acre brush fire swelled seventyfold in a matter of hours, jumping across the I-15 freeway during rush-hour traffic. Then, a few days later, the region was pounded by intense, virtually unheard-of summer rains. Puerto Rico is under its strictest water rationing in history as a monster El Niño forms in the tropical Pacific Ocean, shifting weather patterns worldwide.

...sea levels could rise 10 times faster than previously predicted: 10 feet by 2065. The authors included this chilling warning: If emissions aren't cut, "We conclude that multi-meter sea-level rise would become practically unavoidable. Social disruption and economic consequences of such large sea-level rise could be devastating. It is not difficult to imagine that conflicts arising from forced migrations and economic collapse might make the planet ungovernable, threatening the fabric of civilization...."

So far, dead zones have remained mostly close to the coasts, but in the 21st century, deep-ocean dead zones could become common. These low-oxygen regions could gradually expand in size — potentially thousands of miles across — which would force fish, whales, pretty much everything upward. If this were to occur, large sections of the temperate deep oceans would suffer should the oxygen-free layer grow so pronounced that it stratifies, pushing surface ocean warming into overdrive and hindering upwelling of cooler, nutrient-rich deeper water.

...Enhanced evaporation from the warmer oceans will create heavier downpours, perhaps destabilizing the root systems of forests, and accelerated runoff will pour more excess nutrients into coastal areas, further enhancing dead zones. In the past year, downpours have broken records in Long Island, Phoenix, Detroit, Baltimore, Houston and Pensacola, Florida.

Evidence for the above scenario comes in large part from our best understanding of what happened 250 million years ago, during the "Great Dying," when more than 90 percent of all oceanic species perished after a pulse of carbon dioxide and methane from land-based sources began a period of profound climate change. The conditions that triggered "Great Dying" took hundreds of thousands of years to develop. But humans have been emitting carbon dioxide at a much quicker rate, so the current mass extinction only took 100 years or so to kick-start.

Like ten meters.

Probably too slow to cause a tsunami.

"They" are charlatans and hucksters.

You know how Proglodytes always bitch about religion being a way to terrify children into obedience with lurid stories of damnation?

Yeah. This would be that.

5. is there anyway a giant 'airstone' could be lowered into sea deadzones to force some cold water

circulation? or pump up deep cold sea water and dump it over to force more circulation?

or passive move sea water to inland dry tinder filled dead zones and let it soak in slowly.

passive = use siphons.

noun: syphon
1. a tube used to convey liquid upwards from a reservoir and then down to a lower level of its own accord. Once the liquid has been forced into the tube, typically by suction or immersion, flow continues unaided.

16. It's time to prioritize the issues.

When I see articles like this I'm reminded that some of the other stuff we are arguing over is trivial in comparison. Everyone believes their particular issue is 'the most important', but is it really when compared to this?

I have repeatedly asked cultists in Yahoo comments sections on their daily warming stories if they suddenly announced it was fixed or a mistake if they would be happy.

The question just enrages them.

I will be interested in seeing how the AGW cultists deal with Antarctica ant Tierra Del Fuego bridge.   Yeah sure I know that this will somehow be due to CO2 but the cognitive dissonance will be epic.

I'm 64, and it's quite likely I will see the second wave of calamities strike (the first is already here.) I want to be a witness to the unfolding events.

Even if you live to be 200 you won't live to see yourself proven right.

58. I don't want to see it...

I'm 51 and I feel old. Been through a lot. I can't imagine being around another 30+ years. Hope I'm not. I cannot handle the heat, if it's over 80, I feel sick. Where I live, in SoCal, it's summer through Nov. now. It hasn't been cold enough for a coat in years. I don't even own one anymore, lol! I can't handle this and can't move.

PasadenaTrudy isn't waiting for doomsday or judgement day or whatever to get here to say that the living will envy the dead, she already envies the dead.

I thought snow was supposed to be a thing of the past by now. For a thing of the past, it came down in massive quantities in the northeast the last two years.

Today the EPA released some toxic discharge into the waterways.
I'm waiting to see everyone responsible related to the incident be fired.
Just imagine if it was a private citizen or corporation who had done that.

That's funny. Everyone involved will be promoted. This is the time of Obama where failure in any government job is success.

On MSNBC Live
with Thomas Roberts
Monday afternoon, environmental reporter Tony Dokoupil described the Environmental Protection Agency causing three million gallons of toxic waste to spill into a Colorado river as “good intentions leading to a bad outcome.”
He explained:
“This mine has been leaking sludge for a long time and EPA was on the scene in hopes of cleaning it up.”

Moments later, Dokoupil seemed to suggest local citizens were really the ones to blame for the massive pollution:

...this is one mine, but in fact, there are dozens and maybe even hundreds of them in the area.
And the EPA has been saying, “We want to make this a Superfund site.”

Which means they want to dedicate a special amount of money to clean this really super toxic thing up.
They haven’t had the political support to get that done because locals, believe it or not, want more mining in the area, they want more development.

Dokoupil lectured:
“After this, I think they may revisit the conversation.”

Roberts replied:
“May be a little conflicted.”

Here is a transcript of the August 10 exchange:

2:52 PM ET

THOMAS ROBERTS:
We want to show you what's happened in Colorado.
A discolored sludge that is traveling down the Animas River in the mountain states of Colorado, also to New Mexico as well.

And as you can see, it started in the southwestern Colorado gold mine and has now reached New Mexico.
There are even fears it could spread to the Grand Canyon.

About three million gallons of waste water began spilling on Wednesday, when a cleanup crew breached a dam.
The crew was being supervised by the EPA.

Which is amazing when you think about it.

Tony Dokoupil’s a reporter for MSNBC and the host of Greenhouse on Shift by MSNBC.
So Tony, when people hear that, that this was being observed by the EPA, how could this happen?

TONY DOKOUPIL:
Well, it's good intentions leading to a bad outcome.
This mine has been leaking sludge for a long time and EPA was on the scene in hopes of cleaning it up.

But what they inadvertently did was knock the dam loose and the whole thing came down the river.
So they thought it was one million gallons, it turned out to be three million gallons.

And the stuff is heavy metal, it’s arsenic, it’s lead, it’s cadmium, at 300 to 3,000 times the normal level.
And they're still in a containment phase of this.

They don't know what the cleanup’s going to be because they're still trying to cap it again.

(...)

DOKOUPIL:
The big question now is, you know, how did this happen and how do we avoid having it happen again?

ROBERTS:
In the future.

DOKOUPIL:
Because, you know, this is one mine, but in fact, there are dozens and maybe even hundreds of them in the area.
And the EPA has been saying, “We want to make this a Superfund site.”

Which means they want to dedicate a special amount of money to clean this really super toxic thing up.
They haven’t had the political support to get that done because locals, believe it or not, want more mining in the area, they want more development.

After this, I think they may revisit the conversation.

ROBERTS:
May be a little conflicted.

DOKOUPIL:
Yeah.
