In Zimbabwe, We Don’t Cry for Lions
My mind was absorbed by the biochemistry of gene editing when the text messages and Facebook posts distracted me. So sorry about Cecil. Did Cecil live near your place in Zimbabwe?
Cecil who? I wondered. When I turned on the news and discovered that the messages were about a lion killed by an American dentist, the village boy inside me instinctively cheered: One lion fewer to menace families like mine.
My excitement was doused when I realized that the lion killer was being painted as the villain. I faced the starkest cultural contradiction I’d experienced during my five years studying in the United States. Did all those Americans signing petitions understand that lions actually kill people? That all the talk about Cecil being “beloved†or a “local favorite†was media hype? Did Jimmy Kimmel choke up because Cecil was murdered or because he confused him with Simba from “The Lion King�
In my village in Zimbabwe, surrounded by wildlife conservation areas, no lion has ever been beloved, or granted an affectionate nickname. They are objects of terror.

2. The economic realities of 2nd and 3rd world countries doesn't lessen the importance of conservation
There are interesting discussions to be had about the fact that environmental concerns are a relative luxury that those of us in wealthy countries can worry about, while impoverished populations don't.
However, none of those interesting discussions lessen the importance of conserving our environment.
Whether they do, or not, all members of the human species should cry for our planet and for the destruction of our environment.

why do americans care more for African animals than African people?
the decades of genocide, rape, war, murder, poverty, starvation, drought, exploitation, disease, corruption do not compare to a trophy hunting

If black people knew how to run a successful and prosperous enterprise, from countries down to cities, wouldn't they have already done that in all of human history?
Even when white people leave a functioning infrastructure blacks go to third world squalor, their natural bell curve position, in less than 15 years. For example I give you Hiroshima versus Detroit. This is not racist. This is a fact checked realist view of black history. Yeah, cuz it's totally impossible Cecil to just amble out of the preserve and have a nice, young Zimbabwean child for breakfast. But, hey, maybe he'll be thoughtful enough to save some of that tissue to send to PP. Seriously, how DARE they? They have absolutely no idea what these people deal with. I thought these people, living a natural, primitive life without most earth destroying conveniences were examples of how we should all be living. Any of you assholes that think you know better than someone who spend their life there surrounded by prey that can and has killed your friends and family, buy all means, go over there and show them the error of their ways. Show them how wonderful those sweet kitties are.

That happens over and over and over and over. Hell, it happens here. See Detroit. Zimbabwe used to be the bread basket of Africa. That is until Mugabe came to power, kicked out all the white people, and gave out the land to his cronies. Now they can't even feed themselves.

So because lions act on their natural instincts as predators and kill other animals, including occasionally human beings, we should be happy that some rich asshole dentist killed a lion for no reason other than his own masculinity issues?
I also love how the writer pulls that usual bullshit of guilting people by making it seem like they care more about animals than human beings, as if it's impossible for the human brain to feel compassion and concern for more than one thing at a time. What crap.
But humans acting naturally is bad...
...unless they're born as fags/Proglodytes, in which case they're superior to everyone else.

"Lions' territory"? What a moronic, not-in-the-real-world, flip remark. Ask California trail runners about mountain lions' (protected by state law!) and coyotes' territories! Signs warning of both are common, even in suburban areas inhabited by humans - been on the trails, seen the warning signs!
