Ooooh! I remember this getting smashed before it had a chance to develop. Of course lots of people discounted it due to the source: natl enquirer. They have been right about a lot of things in the past though. The previous story only mentioned the prior link via the documentary she was making about Edwards. And now he's been busted with her at a hotel? Not good!
People magazine ran a giant spread on the Silky Pony and his "undying love" for his cancer-striken wife. Complete with photos of the two renewing their vows after X of years of marriage. Hmmmm.........
John and Elizabeth Edwards took a break from the campaign trail to celebrate their 30th anniversary yesterday by renewing their vows. The couple wrote new vows for the private ceremony at their Chapel Hill home; the small group in attendance included kids Cate, Emma Claire and Jack. Then they headed to their favorite romantic restaurant: Wendy's.
The two law school students wed on July 30, 1977, just days after graduating from UNC and taking the bar exam. The 24-year-old groom gave his 28-year-old bride an $11 ring (she's still wearing it); the honeymoon in Williamsburg lasted one night. On their first anniversary, they were in the midst of a move and dropped by Wendy's for dinner -- a tradition they've repeated every year since. Last night, the renewlyweds dined at the hometown fast-food joint; he had a cheeseburger and iced tea, she had chili and a Frosty.

So, apparently he does have two Americas. :rimshot:

What? A Lawyer and Politician has a love child with another woman while his wife battles cancer? And he's a Democrat? I'm shocked I tell ya', SHOCKED!
KFI's John and Ken led their show with this today. They were sayin' the lady looks like Prince Charles wife Priscilla Parker Bowles!
-
What I'm waiting for is the lawsuit - If Edwards sues, its probably a bogus story, If there is any truth to it, he will not risk the dirty laundry airing that a trial would bring.
-
that sound you hear in the background is his vice presidential aspirations exploding into flames.

UPDATE: The NATIONAL ENQUIRER is revealing new details about the political scoop we broke yesterday - the secret meeting between Vice Presidential candidate John Edwards and Rielle Hunter.
A team of ENQUIRER reporters caught the married ex-senator visiting his mistress and secret love child late Monday night at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles hotel.
As we reported previously, Edwards arrived at the hotel at 9:45 p.m. (PST) Monday, driven by a friend in a BMW, and was seen by ENQUIRER reporter Alan Butterfield.
We can now reveal that the man who drove Edwards was Bob McGovern, the same man who drove Rielle to the hotel from Santa Barbara and rented her room in his name.
He was driving a 1999 four-door midnight blue BMW.
Said Butterfield: "The car had a baby seat in the back for Rielle's infant. He pulled into the parking lot, took a ticket from the automated machine, pulled forward, and stopped right after the parking gate lowered. Edwards got out of the passenger side, walked around the front of the car and went in a side entrance near the swimming pool.
"McGovern parked the car and then slowly walked back inside the hotel and went upstairs."
In the aftermath of our exclusive story, the NATIONAL ENQUIRER has now learned:
* Edwards' advisers are "spitting mad and furious" that his late-night escapades have made international headlines because it could derail his chances of becoming Barack Obama's running mate.
* Edwards has not explained his whereabouts to any members of other news media outlets who have been trying to follow up on the story.
* His mistress, blonde divorcee Rielle, meanwhile, has returned to her home in Santa Barbara, Calif., and sources say she is "in despair" that Edwards might cut off contact with her because their latest rendezvous has been exposed in the media.
After we posted the details of Edwards shocking meeting with Rielle, political sources close to Edwards revealed how he was candidly scolded by his advisors hours later.
One political source divulged: "His advisors told him they were furious that this had been brought out by the NATIONAL ENQUIRER right when Obama is considering whether he's V.P. material with the Democratic National Convention (Aug. 25-28 in Denver) only weeks away.
"From what I hear, John was read the riot act by his people. The fallout from this could cost him the job of running mate. They told him Obama doesn't want to pick someone and be embarrassed by the choice. This 'bimbo eruption' at this critical time will do him absolutely no good.
"While his people are not trying to tell him how to live his personal life, this baggage isn't going to help him convince Obama that he's the right guy to be his veep."
A day after the incident, Edwards traveled to Denver for an appearance at the University of Denver in support of the anti-poverty campaign, called Half in Ten. The very first question put to him at the event was about whether he'd become Obama's running mate.
Edwards was quoted as saying: "I'm not seeking the job. I don't expect to be asked…but anything that Sen. Obama would ask me to do, whether it's in his campaign or in his presidency, I would consider seriously."
But Edwards made no official comment on our bombshell disclosure about his late-night antics less than 24 hours earlier.
Said another source: "He's going out of his way to avoid discussing it - he knows whatever he says will come back to haunt him. If he denies being there, he doesn't want to be found out to be a liar."
In other new details, the NATIONAL ENQUIRER has learned that McGovern, the man who picked up Edwards and dropped him off at the hotel, has become one of Rielle's closest friends.
McGovern reserved rooms 246 and 252 at the Beverly Hilton under his name. Rielle was in one room and McGovern was in another with her baby. This allowed her and Edwards to spend time alone.
Another source said: "Bob McGovern is someone Rielle met in Santa Barbara when she recently moved there. He's become one of her closest friends and agreed to help her see Edwards."
Rielle has not yet made any public comments about her Monday night visit from Edwards .

enquirer reporters file criminal complaint against hotel security guards (http://www.nationalenquirer.com/update_john_edwards_affair_criminal_complaint_filed/celebrity/65209)
i realize that this is the enquirer, but these reporters just aren't acting like this is a hoax.

This explains why it was necessary to run out to California every time he needed a haircut. :rotf:
-
the criminal complaint will probably make it impossible for the MSM to continue to turn a blind eye to this story . . . . I saw an item on the philly enquirer's web site about it this morning. usually, as soon as the first MSM outlet plays the story, the dam bursts, and everyone carries it.

isnt Elizabeth Edwards being uncharacteristically quiet over this? She is usually the first (of the two of them) to find a microphone and start putting her thoughts and opinions out there right away..
hmm...

Considering that whenever the Breck Girl has been attacked in the past, Elizabeth has been this passionate in his defense:

Yes, her silence now is very, very out of character.
-
Interesting. I don't usually believe anything in the tabloids, but the Enquirer filing charges and their follow up does give me pause.
And Elizabeth Edwards hasn't made a peep and she's usually out in front "defending" John.

Guard Confirms Late-Night Hotel Encounter Between Ex-Sen. John Edwards, Tabloid Reporters
A hotel security guard told FOXNews.com he intervened this week between a man he identified as former Sen. John Edwards and tabloid reporters who chased down the former presidential hopeful after what they're calling a rendezvous with his mistress and love child.
The Beverly Hilton Hotel guard said he encountered a shaken and ashen-faced Edwards — whom he did not immediately recognize — in a hotel men's room early Tuesday morning in a literal tug-of-war with reporters on the other side of the door.
"What are they saying about me?" the guard said Edwards asked.
"His face just went totally white," the guard said, when Edwards was told the reporters were shouting out questions about Edwards and Rielle Hunter, a woman the National Enquirer says is the mother of his child.
.
.
.
.
A former campaign staffer, speaking on condition of anonymity, told FOXNews.com he wishes he were "more surprised" to hear reports Edwards was visiting Hunter. "I'm definitely upset by it. I wish I was more surprised, though."
-

well, he can still practice law as a private citizen i suppose... but being a public servant, yeah, that's pretty much over for him.
although, it was over years ago when his home state didnt like him or want to vote for him.. and neither did the rest of the country :-)

yeah, but how long was that? his "career" as a public servant was only 3 minutes old when he interrupted it to become a candidate for president (sorta like the guy that they appear to be ready to nominate this year). so, there's a real chance that the act of conceiving the love baby actually lasted longer than his effective career as a public servant, and should therefore take precedence.
-
Not that he ever had a shot, but can you imagine if he had beat Hillary and Obama to the top? Or if he was seriously on the short list for VP?
He just confirmed every bad vibe I ever got from him.
I'm just going to say it, I really think he's a shallow bastard who probably got tired of dealing with his sick wife. And, I imagine he's probably stuck on himself (see the I'm So Pretty primping video) who thinks he can bag any babe he wants. Wouldn't surprise me if this wasn't the first mistress.
-
it's definitely becoming more prominent in the MSM . . . he'll be calling a news conference soon . . .
"I did not run away . . . . into that men's room . . .. "
-
Nat Enq. ran with this months ago and everyone poo-pooed it. I was hoping for another media outlet to confirm it. Apparently the Nat. Enq is relentless :-)
Anyway, it was like a picture suddendly coming into focus when I saw this story and realized it's real. All of the things Edwards has done make a little more sense now. Especially the interaction between John and Elizabeth and her prominent role in his campaign (or rather, her loud mouth).

hmm.. interesting point.
if, and that's a big if, obama chooses the silky pony, its over for them... Edwards is a used goods and has a track record of not getting elected.
i think obama will need ovaries to balance his ticket.. :-)

thats pretty sad....
one of the talking heads on radio today was saying, "ya know, George W. Bush has not once, NOT ONCE, shown a bad character while in Texas OR in the White House. he hasnt fooled around on his wife, he kicked an alcohol issue and he's apparently a pretty good dad, son and brother. he doesnt change his mind and vacillate between decisions. he makes up his mind and sticks to it and people call him an idiot.
"but Clinton and Obama are "geniuses" merely because of their party persuasion.. and nothing else. Hell, lots of us could be Rhodes Scholars if we'd been given the shot at going to school in Europe... but most of us cant. and look at what an immorale SOB Clinton has continued to be.. to this day."
the whole thing was bang on... GWB can never be looked down on for his character or morals. the press has tried so hard to get him ousted from the White House, and they will not stop even he's left.. but they can't come up with anything - they cant even get impeachment off the ground, and how many times have they discussed it??

JOHN EDWARDS AFFAIR: CRIMINAL COMPLAINT FILED (http://www.nationalenquirer.com/update_john_edwards_affair_criminal_complaint_filed/celebrity/65209)
NATIONAL ENQUIRER reporters Alan Butterfield and Alexander Hitchen filed a criminal complaint with the Beverly Hills Police Department on Thursday, July 24, charging that hotel security acted unlawfully while the reporters were trying to question the former senator.
Edwards now could be contacted by police to give an eyewitness account of what occurred.

Sleaze scuppers Democrat golden boy (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/us_elections/article4406814.ece)
Gotcha: Senator John Edwards, whose wife has cancer, has been caught in a sex scandal that ends his vice-presidential hopes
(http://www.timesonline.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00374/John_Edwards_374859a.jpg)
SCRATCH John Edwards off the list of potential vice-presidential candidates. The former White House contender, who had been hoping to get the nod from Barack Obama, is in the midst of a full-blown sex scandal.
Every supermarket shopper knows that the preternaturally youthful former senator for North Carolina may have fathered a love child with a film-maker while Elizabeth, his saintly wife, is dying of cancer. There are sensational new details on the National Enquirer website, although most of the media have done their best to ignore them.
The tabloid magazine cornered Edwards, 55, leaving a Los Angeles hotel where Rielle Hunter, his alleged mistress, and her baby were staying, at 2.40am last Tuesday. He ran down a hallway and dived into the men’s bathroom. A hotel security guard confirmed the encounter. “His face just went totally white,†the guard said.
The story has been bubbling away for months, but so far there has been not a word about it in the mainstream newspapers, even though Edwards was John Kerry’s running mate in 2004 and has been tipped for a prominent job in an Obama administration – if not vice-president, then attorney-general or antipoverty tsar.
Edwards volunteered recently: “I’m prepared to consider seriously anything, anything [Obama] asks me to do for our country.â€
He can stop waiting by the telephone. News of the “gotcha†rapidly circulated on the internet via the Drudge Report and has been buzzing on the blogs. The Enquirer’s story appears to be well sourced.
-
Heh. Yep, the Brits have a way with words don't they? :-)
-
so Elizabeth is now 'dying' ...? I thought it was something she could live with another 20 years?
-
the news and observer, pretty much john edwards' hometown newspaper, has picked up on the story. this could be the first domino.
I am changing the thread title to more accurately reflect the ongoing nature of this story; it is dragging out forever . . . basically because the enquirer wants it to drag out endlessly.
Facing questions, Edwards evades reporters
It was only three weeks ago that John Edwards was fielding media questions on his chances of filling the Democratic Party's vice presidential slot on Barack Obama's ticket or a potential Cabinet position in an Obama administration.
On Wednesday, however, the former U.S. senator and 2004 vice presidential nominee was eager to duck the press when the questions took a tabloid turn.
About a dozen reporters and photojournalists attended a speech Edwards gave to an AARP Foundation symposium on poverty and aging in Washington. Afterward, he avoided most of the waiting reporters, at least some of whom wanted to question him about recent reports in the National Enquirer that alleged an inappropriate relationship with a former campaign videographer.
Citing unnamed sources, the Enquirer published a story in October claiming that Edwards was having an affair with a woman who filmed a series of campaign videos. The story resurfaced last week in the online version of the Enquirer, which claimed that Edwards had visited the woman and their "love child" July 21 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif. In October, the woman posted an online statement denying the first story. In December, an Edwards campaign worker claimed to be the father of the woman's then-unborn child.
On Wednesday, Edwards apparently ducked out a side area used by the kitchen staff in the fourth-floor ballroom of Washington's historic Hotel Monaco. Edwards emerged from a lower-level handicap ramp near the rear of the hotel with two men. When approached by a Charlotte Observer reporter, Edwards said, "Can't do it now, I'm sorry" and quickly walked past.

-
Scumbag. Larry Craig doesn't know how to use a mens room and the media wouldn't leave him alone. Edwards has a love child while his wife is dying and only a tabloid is doing any investigative work? Sheesh.
-
the noose tightens . . . .
Birth certificate of child linked to ex-Sen. John Edwards lists no father
The birth certificate of a child whom a tabloid newspaper claims was fathered by former Democratic Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina doesn't identify the child's father.
The document, obtained through a routine records request, shows that Frances Quinn Hunter was born last Feb. 27 to Rielle Hunter, a videographer who worked on Edwards' presidential campaign last year.
But the space for the name of the father is blank, although the child was born more than two months after Hunter identified Andrew Young, Edwards' campaign finance director, as the father of her then unborn child. Young claimed paternity in a statement from his lawyer that was posted on the political blog mydd.com.
Edwards withdrew from the presidential race in January, but he remained a major figure in the presidential contest throughout the primary season as analysts tried to guess whether he would endorse Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama. He unveiled his support for Obama on May 14 at a nationally televised rally in Michigan.
Edwards, a former U.S. senator from North Carolina, was expected to play a major supporting role in the general election as Obama tries to win North Carolina, which no Democratic presidential candidate has done since 1976.

Edwards had thought he woud run as VP with Obama but this puts an end to his plans. Wonder how he explained to his dying wife, "sorry honey, I had an affair with this woman and guess what, duh...there's this baby". wonder if Obama still thinks Edward's will still help him win NC?

I would think Edwards is still saying this is some made up rumor by the Enquirer. I doubt he acknowledged it was true or even talked to Elizabeth about it.

I'm waiting for Edwards to come out and say, "this isn't helping my kids". :-)

An update (mostly for WE since he seems very intrigued by this story )
PHOTOS (http://www.nationalenquirer.com/exclusive_john_edwards_love_child_photos/celebrity/65258) of John Edwards and love child!
The NATIONAL ENQUIRER is releasing the photograph that the world has been waiting for – the first-ever picture of John Edwards and his love child!
The stunning “spy photo†shows the former presidential contender holding his infant daughter Frances Quinn Hunter at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles – where the ENQUIRER caught him visiting the baby’s mother, his mistress Rielle Hunter.
Edwards is holding his love child while standing in front of a distinctive striped curtain.
The same window covering hangs in each one of the hotel’s guest rooms – and is clearly visible in photos of guest rooms on the hotel’s Web site.
“These photos are damning proof,†said a source close to the situation.
“He’s been caught lying about his affair with Rielle and their love child for many months – and now the proof against him is piling up.
“His elaborate coverup is unraveling at the seams.â€
It's actually kind of fuzzy and hard to tell. Plus, the original reporters were saying he was wearing a blue button down shirt with the sleeves rolled up, and here he's just wearing a blue tshirt.
Interesting though.

I have no idea if it's true or not, although they have been very coy about this one; letting the story out in dribs and drabs to prolong it. but you have to admit, it already walked like a duck, and now it's beginning to quack.

A trial attorney like the Breck Girl know instinctively what he should be doing to nip this in the bud, were this nothing more than a scandal rag trying to make hay on a story with nothing behind it.
Sue the shit out of them.
Call a press conference, and in front of all those adoring media shills, swab his cheek and hand it over for DNA comparison testing. Assuming the Breck Girl is innocent, he can then loudly proclaim thus, and promise them that the proof of his innocence will be back in 48 hours to a week - however long it takes for a reputable independent lab to run the DNA test.
He then gets to take the National Enquirer to the cleaners for libel (It's been done to them twice before in the last 10 years, so he's got plenty of case history to use against 'em) with the media and the entire liberal mob behind him.
The fact that he isn't doing this says to me that his case against the Enquirer isn't quite so airtight as he might like it to be.

I just hope this puts a final nail in the coffin of Edwards' political career.
His home state didn't vote for him. He's out of Washington. I'd say he is heavy baggage and his streak across the sun is over.

he was doing a pretty good job of that on his own. how much of a future is there for a politician that can't win
an election? jeeez, I have won as many elections as he has in the past 10 years, and I haven't even run for
anything.

indeed. it would be pretty simple to disprove. so simple, in fact, that you do have to wonder why he isn't doing it.

he didn't carry his home county, either. hell, I am beginning to wonder if he carried his home address.

We'll I'd think so too, but he still holds some glamor for some "progressives."

Dems call on Edwards to address affair rumors (http://www.newsobserver.com/politics/story/1167499.html)
RALEIGH - With two weeks before their national convention, several prominent Democrats are saying Edwards must publicly address anonymously sourced National Enquirer stories that claim he had an affair with a campaign worker and fathered her baby.
Democrats gather in Denver on Aug. 25 and Edwards, as the 2004 vice presidential nominee and a presidential candidate who won delegates this year, ordinarily would be a speaker.
Instead some Democrats say convention organizers will try to avoid the lingering questions if Edwards himself doesn’t talk.
“He absolutely does have to [resolve it]. If it’s not true, he has to issue a stronger denial,†said Gary Pearce, the Democratic strategist who ran Edwards’ 1998 Senate race. “It’s a very damaging thing. ... The big media has tried to be responsible and handle this with kid gloves, but it’s clearly getting ready to bust out. If it’s not true, he’s got to stand up and say, ‘This is not true. That is not my child and I’m going to take legal action against the people who are spreading these lies.’ It’s not enough to say, ‘That’s tabloid trash.’ â€
(more...)
"This? This is just a formality. Nothing to worry about." :whatever:
