Sophia Petrillo has gone to be with Sal....
"The Golden Girls," which ran from 1985 to 1992, was an immediate hit, and Sophia, who began as a minor character, soon evolved into a major one.
Audiences particularly loved the verbal zingers Getty would hurl at the other three. When McClanahan's libidinous character Blanche once complained that her life was an open book, Sophia shot back, "Your life's an open blouse."
Getty had gained a knack for one-liners in her late teens when she did standup comedy at a Catskills hotel. Female comedians were rare in those days, however, and she bombed.
Undeterred, she continued to pursue a career in entertainment, and while her parents were encouraging, her father also insisted that she learn office skills so she would have something to fall back on.
Born Estelle Scher to Polish immigrants in New York, Getty fell in love with theater when she saw a vaudeville show at age 4.
She married New York businessman Arthur Gettleman (the source of her stage name) in 1947, and they had two sons, Carl and Barry. The marriage prevailed despite her long absences on the road and in "The Golden Girls."
Getty was evasive about her height, acknowledging only that she was "under 5 feet and under 100 pounds."

My wife just discovered, and I re-discovered GG.
Damn that was some funny writing (and it comes after Frasier which is tear-making funny).
I was hearing rumors about a GG reunion special -- up until the passing of Ms. Getty it was possible. But the rest can still do it in memorium.
RIP Estelle. You were a pistol and gave literally millions of laughs.

Golden Girls was and remains pure filth. The show makes me want to puke. I'd hate to be Ms. Getty right now standing before God trying to explain why she participated in it.

A bunch of old hags making sex joke after sex joke. I'll see it on every once in a while as I'm flipping the channels at work or someone else's house. Guess what is always happening. They're making sex jokes! If my 70-year-old mother talked like that, I'd wash her mouth out with soap.

You must be watching a different show. It comes up occasionally, but only as little rim-shots.

GG is a classic. And quite tame considering the real "filth" that is on every other channel today. Tila Tequila and her ilk spring to mind.....

It has been a favorite of mine since it came on in 1985. The show did dwell on the sexual innuendo and trip over political correctness every now and then, but it was funny stuff. It certainly didn't break any new ground by crossing some line that wasn't already crossed in the 1970's.
Like Bea Arthur said, it was a show based on the unlikely love and devotion four old women found for themselves in their golden years. She also said the situation would not ever work in real life, but it made for a hellava television show.
Estelle Getty's Sophia Petrillo, by the grace of great writing by others combined with her ability to capture the part, will be one of TV's all time top 10 characters. Sophia once said after a scolding for saying another inapproiate one-liner, "I'm old. I'm suppose to be colorful" - which sums it up nicely.

I always loved watching it. I still catch it on reruns occassionally. It's funny to see the social commentary from so many years ago.
Back in St. Olaf... :-)

Sophia: "Picture it. Sicily, 1920....a young peasant girl meets a poor struggling painter. They share a bottle of Chianti. They throw back a few boilermakers. He paints her picture and they make passionate love. She spends a good part of the next morning scrubbing his fingerprints off her with a loofa sponge.
Finally, he shows her the painting. She is insulted! It looks nothing like her. She storms out of the apartment and they never she each other again.
That young peasant girl was me, and the artist was Pablo Picasso."
Dorothy: "Ma, you're lying!"
Rose: "Dorothy, be positive."
Dorothy: "Ok. I'm positive she's lying!"
(from memory - some lines may not be exact)

One might say that one led to the other. The continuing degradation of TV programming doesn't happen in a vacuum. (Maybe in a vacuum tube.) These show creators push the line continually little by little. What was verboten when the Golden Girls was pushing the line is now commonplace. Imagine what you will be able to see on TV 20 years from now.

Before or after you French kissed her? (Running away...ducking...) :-)

That show cracks me up. But I always feel like I should go to church afterward to repent. :lmao:

I called them many times about the gaudy earrings the GG would wear. They always hung up on me.

I don't think they are pushing the line. I think they are responding to consumer demands. That's more unsettling to me than anything.
TV shows have always reflected society. If they didn't resonate with viewers, people wouldn't watch.
Clearly there is a lot of filth on TV today. I would disconnect our lowly 55 channel basic cable if I could. Or at least pick and choose my channel line up to relfect my tastes.
Bottom line: everyone has the right to an opinion on what's "filth" and what isn't. I find no redeeming value in a lot of the popular TV shows on today. I just don't watch them. Ironically, it's shows like GG that seek I out instead. I'd much rather hear those "old hags" popping out witty one-liners about being a single senior (who may be sexually active) than I would rather watch the STD fests called reality dating shows.
