Here in the Philippines - in way over my head (Sounds like you're kidnapping a kid just fine to me)
I 'm on the island of Cebu and while traveling by bus to Moalboal this little kid started following me.(They do that when you pay for them, Rush)
I think he snuck on the bus in Cebu City because I remember seeing one of his crutches as it slid under my seat.
When me and my wife got off in Moalboal she remembers seeing him trying to crawl down the isle of the over crowded bus. At the bus stop he showed me an obviouly botched amputation of one of his feet just below the ankle and motioned asking for a hand out.(So he started following you when you were on the bus, which he snuck on, and you know this because of this cinematic moment of a crutch slipping under your seat. But your wife has to recall him crawling down the isle (sic)...why? I thought you said he had crutches. Did you steal them? And what are you doing at the bus stop with him when you got OFF the bus? This screenplay needs to go through a notes process.)
I only had 1.5 pesos in coins and gave him that but my wife had 20 pesos that she gave and he seemed to satisfied. She reminded me of a few chocolates we had in camera bag and I gave him those too.(All travelers carry CHOCOLATE in a CAMERA BAG in an UNAIRCONDITIONED PLACE in the SUMMER. Furthermore, you have a phone and at least one camera...where are your pics of this fine young lad you've taken?)
He was so hungery he couldn't even wait to unwrap the Hershey's Kisses - instead just squeezing the foil until the half melted chocolate oozed out and sucking them clean.(Nice touch, Steinbeck.)
We immediately took him across the street to a traditional Filipino eatery("Traditional." What the actual ****? ) and got him a proper meal of rice fish and vegtables topped off with an orange fanta.(Goooooooooood Morning Vietnammmmmmmmm! Yeah, I remember that movie, too.) Now this is small boy perhaps 9 or 10 but he did his best to finish the entire meal. What he couldn't finish the cook helped put it in a plastic bag to save for later.(Did Oliver let your twist him?)
By now me and my wife like this little guy so now we have a local carpenter building him some properly sized crutches.(What is this, a ****ing kung fu movie? A "local carpenter?" Does he make "traditional" crutches?) The ones he had must have been from the original accident and were so short I was afraid he might become permenetly hunched over from trying to use them.
I'm going to try and take him back to Cebu and see about getting him into a doctor to look at that leg. I'm no doctor - but even I can tell the amputation of his foot was badly botched if performed by a doctor at all(I liked him better when he was called Ho Jon. Teach him to make martinis.)
God I wish they had a Shriner's Hospital here(Not as much as I wish you had pictures of all this largesse)

Those are the posts to DU that FreakinDJ made AFTER posting the thread in which he effectively saved the life of a disabled Filipino boy by fillinf him full of orange soda and outfitting him with a new set of crutches (made by a "local carpenter," because as we all know, modern crutches are not sold in the Philippines).
Let me repeat the point with slightly more emphasis: FreakinDJ, who stores chocolates in his camera bag, took on the challenges and tribulations of a young Filipino boy and after his initial thread, he logs on to issue missives on, among other things, AIR CONDITIONERS IN THE UNITED STATES. Not a single syllable of followup on this boy he and his wife abducted. I guess that's a day in the life of a DUmmy, though: you save so many lives and change so many minds every day, gee whiz, who can keep track?
The resolution to this one-act play is, of course, that FreakinDJ is a FreakinLiar, and while he may have seen a boy on crutches, he would sooner spell "sense" and "sentence" correctly before he lifted one chocolate-stained finger to help.
Who is it among us who said, "Dummies lie, they always lie?"

Still no word from FreakinDJ the FreakinLiar, financier of traditional Filipino dishes and bespoke pediatric crutches.
Maybe the "local carpenter" is out of cocobolo and had to send to Africa for some stock before getting to work. You'd think in the meanwhile this doctor from Cebu would have issued an opinion about the amateurish amputation done on the boy the first time, although one wonders what problem a layperson could have with someone else's amputation. If it was gangrenous, I would imagine that FreakinLiar would have sought out medical attention BEFORE plying the lad with traditional Filipino fare, so I am left to assume that FreakinLiar simply didn't like the aestheticsof the amputation (which, geez, man, haven't you ever seen a DU picture thread? When are you going to take THOSE failed amputations to Cebu?).
Let's just hope FreakinLiar comes back with memory cards full of denouement for this young man: a new set of handmade crutches, a gut full of "traditional" food, and a pocketful of melted chocolate. I won't hold my breath.

I know that somehow he will conclude that conservatives in general, and cavers in particular are to blame because we are such awful people.
