Long story short Barbecue was stolen from African slaves and Native Americans struggling to stay free, because these are the only people on earth who thought to put meat to flame.
So if you grilled up a steak, or just a few dogs this past 4th of July...YOU are a racist!

But the techniques were all developed by the slaves for sure. They were always given the "crappiest" cuts of meat and other things the "betters" wouldn't eat and so they developed slow cook techniques and spice rubs and ways to make things taste better.
And then, of course, whitey stole it all. Just like they did everything else.

Exactly how was BBQ "stolen?"
Did someone patent the novel method of slow cooking lower quality cuts of meat and have their cooking patent infringed?
If anything I would say that "whitey" celebrated the practice they developed.
Did whitey also "steal" the method of spicing up foods that was developed predominantly in warmer climates where meat would go rancid before refrigeration was developed?
Stealing implies someone took something away from someone else. Last I checked, all Americans had the ability to BBQ their food. Please correct me if I'm wrong and there is a massive racist conspiracy to deny blacks their heritage-developed and culturally unique BBQ meat cooking process.

Geesh! Just about every ethnic group around the world discovered - whether independently or through common ancestors (whether Noah or Lucy) - that slow cooking makes tough portions of an animal edible. Similarly, the discovery that herbs, spices and seasonings improve the flavor of foods. As for cooking over wood fire, what do DU-folk think humans used before electricity and natural gas came into use?!
For Lesson 2, the discovery that grinding, spicing/seasoning, and forming miscellaneous scraps of meat, offal, and fat into casings made from the offal maximizes the nutrition gained from each animal, preserves meat from spoiling, and can be very tasty. BS, many of the slaves were allowed to raise their own animals to feed themselves. They weren't just given the table scraps from the owners kitchen.

What a bunch of crap.
The ONLY thing taken from the natives was the name - barbacoa - and the people who took the name from the natives were the SPANISH - not cracka-ass honkeys from northern Europe.
Also - barbacoa wasn't what one thinks about barbecues today. Meat wasn't being cooked and seasoned - it was being salted and dried. In other words they were making jerky.
Anyway, the original grills were an Iron Age invention. Slow cooking meats - especially pork - is part of Chinese history, and goes back about three thousand years. Rotisserie cooking is French in origin, and goes back to the 13th century.
And everything I posted above is before anyone even knew there was an America, because people believed the world was flat and they would certainly fall off the edge and be eaten by dragons if they dared to sail too far out to sea.
So, this crap about stealing barbeque from slaves and native Americans is as much a bunch of hogwash as are the 'racist' origins of Picnic that DU fawned over last year.
And come on DUmmies -- anyone who doesn't realize - almost instinctively - that humans started roasting meat and other things outdoors shortly after the invention of fire is a full-on 'moran'. So, stop with the holier than thou sanctimonious white guilt racist shtick. You do not do your cause any favors when you stretch your meme out to the point of ludicrous.

Thanks, There is quite a bit more history to it that I left out, because I was trying to make a point to counter the libs ridiculous claim, and of course barbacoa has changed since it was first discovered into slow cooking [insert meat here] until its a pile of fall-apart in your mouth deliciousness. After doing a quick Google, I found this site that hits on a few of the points I had mentioned, and adds some more details I left out. It is a fascinating read If you are fond of adding fire to meat :D

I'll have you know I dry-rubbed those ribs with a carolina rub recipe, smoked them for 3 hours spraying them down with applesauce/water mixed at a 1:1 ratio, then wrapped them in aluminum foil for 2 hours with honey, brown sugar and butter, and then put them on for one more hour to let them bark up. That's HAND-CRAFTED ribisim, I mean Racism! :drool:
I post this picture to try and illustrate the stupidity of the left. If they think THAT is racist, then I feel sorry for them. Because I think it is TASTY! And I can't wait to have me some more of it when I get back home.

I went all out racist today for lunch. Wife stopped and bought lunch so she could go prepare for her bible school next week. I had BBQ ribs, greens, mac & cheese, butter beans, cornbread and banana pudding....and ice tea probably made from tea leaves picked by slave labor somewhere.

I'm going to Oscar's Smokehouse again this week. When I was in there last Thursday, I saw hickory-smoked baby back ribs there. I get paid this week . . . Before the trip. :-) :whistling: :yahoo: :fuelfire:

I graded for a housing development in Concord N.C. 18 years ago. There was a BBQ place near bye where hwy 200 crossed hwy 49. We ate lunch there every day, 6 days a week, for 8 weeks. The BBQ was excellent but after 8 weeks of it we had had enough BBQ for awhile. :-)
Our local VFD cooks 9,000 to 10,000 pounds of BBQ 3 times a year. They start selling on Friday and are usually out by midday Saturday.
