Victory for Activists: Deandre Cooper is Going Home
Photos: Tom Abbott [using the good rig]
June 26, 2015 (San Diego) Deandre Cooper, one of the young men caught in the 192.5 dragnet, is going home today. While he had to take a plea from the court, Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Frasier set the original sentence aside.
Before the Judge read his decision, the Government stated that Cooper “has changed his life and this has been due to the support of his mother.†The prosecutor added, “we hope that with this sentence he is able to remove himself from the situation.â€
Judge Frasier then asked about Cooper’s status with the 9\5 Grimms Gang and that he was at the lesser end of the scale. Which the State agreed. They were asked how they got to the three year of probation.

We did video this, but ... I will not run video of a young AA man in "county blues" and in shackles.
There is plenty of academic writing on this and how the media plays a role in perpetuating stereotypes. So I extracted the photo and cropped him out. I posted a comment on this at GD... my view, Media needs to stop doing that. There is a lot of academic papers on how that is unhelpful regarding racism in the United States.
Of course it was ignored. But hey, not like that particularly shocks me.
But that is my ultra small, grain of salt on this. I made a decision, we made a decision to mostly not run photos of children to protect them. We also made the decision to try to avoid activating implicit bias a while ago. So we are hyper conscious in photos we run, and also videos.
Here is the thread if anybody is interested...

In other words, Criminal rapper plea bargains out to lesser charge.
oh... and no one is interested.

1. I need to update this.
Since Deandre is under the custody of the state, he is still in prison. There is a hold that was not removed on Friday in a timely manner. God I hate the system at times. But the lawyer did not do this apparently. So until Monday. This us a lifetime and really has angered both mother and son.
:o What?
According to the state Cooper originally pled guilty to 182.5 B which is of Section 182, which is “any person who actively participates in any criminal street gang.â€
Frasier sentenced Cooper to three years formal probation. The terms of the sentence are simple. He is to no longer do any gang signing. He will not “associate with any known gang member from 5\9 Grimm, that includes Facebook.â€
His prison term of 6 years has been stayed but will only remain stayed if Cooper completes probation successfully.
So... what are the odds he'll **** up his probation within a month?
This statue has had a very hard time becoming precedent in San Diego. This is one more of these cases where precedent was not quite created.
It's a law, NADIN. It doesn't become precedent. A ruling on the law might for precedence, but the law it self? Not so much.

nadin. I know you read these posts. You continually make the same mistake.
You confuse the consequences for criminal behavior for racism.
He's in jail because he is a crook, not because he is black.
edit to add, I don't expect nads to learn from this. truth is difficult for the girl reporter.

Nutcase nadin is truly among the worst writers the DUmp has ever produced.
Her grammar, sentence structure, and logic are so confused and illiterate it's really hard to believe she earned a college degree, even in a primitive country like mexico.

The dude pled guilty.
The dude was sentenced.
The less severe sentence was based on apparent evidence of being changed.
A guilty plea and a sentence is justice, not racism.
As to whether the dude is changed, time will tell. Unfortunately, if he isn't there will likely be more people hurt by him before the police take him off the streets again, or his "career" takes him off the streets permanently.
