Title: Supreme Court: Same-sex couples can marry in all 50 states
Post by: txradioguy on June 26, 2015, 11:03:53 AM
The Supreme Court ruled Friday that same-sex couples have a right to marry nationwide, in a historic decision that invalidates gay marriage bans in more than a dozen states.

Gay and lesbian couples already can marry in 36 states and the District of Columbia. But in a 5-4 ruling, the court held that the 14th Amendment requires states to issue marriage licenses for same-sex couples and to recognize such marriages performed in other states.

The ruling means the remaining 14 states that did not allow such unions, in the South and Midwest, will have to stop enforcing their bans.

Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote the majority opinion, just as he did in the court's previous three major gay rights cases dating back to 1996.

"No union is more profound than marriage," Kennedy wrote, joined by the court's four more liberal justices. He continued: "Under the Constitution, same-sex couples seek in marriage the same legal treatment as opposite-sex couples, and it would disparage their choices and diminish their personhood to deny them this right."

The outcome is the culmination of two decades of Supreme Court litigation over marriage, and gay rights generally. Cheers broke out outside the Supreme Court when the decision was announced.

Speaking in the Rose Garden, as he did a day earlier after the high court upheld a key component of his health care overhaul, President Obama called the ruling a "victory for America."

The president said it would "end the patchwork system we currently have" and the uncertainty gay couples face over whether their unions will be recognized in other states.

"This ruling will strengthen all of our communities," Obama said.

But other justices argued that the court should not be able to order states to change their marriage definition. Chief Justice John Roberts, in a dissent joined by Justices Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia, called the ruling an "extraordinary step."

"Many people will rejoice at this decision, and I begrudge none their celebration. But for those who believe in a government of laws, not of men, the majority's approach is deeply disheartening," he wrote. "... The majority's decision is an act of will, not legal judgment."

...the 14th Amendment...

I wonder if I'm alone in marveling that during this current liberal frenzy against anything they deem "Confederate", the squalid 14th Amendment is used (again) to stomp down the State (again) and create "rights" where none were ever intended to exist.

Ah well, at least our collapse will be a lot more exciting and dramatic than Rome's...

They just did the following.

Threw the entire tax code into the trash.

Threw estate law into the trash.

Threw all SS and Medicare projections into the trash.

Threw all health and life insurance calculations into the trash.

Threw the investment industry (all our IRAs and 401Ks) balance sheets into the trash.

Threw any previous economic norm into the trash.

Threw the likely future of any middle aged, non government dependent, average person into the trash.

And all to appease a tiny voting bloc and make people 'feel better' about themselves... Last I checked, feelings were NOT supposed to have any place in the court room... But then, I'm not a Harvard trained-lawyer, so what do I know?  The stupidity of this decision astounds me.

Good thing Barrycare subsidies were ruled on yesterday as well; the added health care expense to treat new AIDS patients will be needed.

I am a White Christian straight female. According to what's been happening lately, I should be able to claim some kind of special minority treatment pretty soon.

I posted this because, with its ruling, SCOTUS has shown a distain for voting Americans and states rights. I'd also like to thank the SCOTUS for giving ISIS and the rest of the Islamofascists yet another reason to hate America.  I'm expecting to see this headline in the near future:

Don't forget incidents of domestic violence.  Now that they are "married", they will fall under the same law everyone else is subject to when it comes to a "husband" assaulting his "wife" (and vice versa).

Divorce Court just got more interesting.

CHICAGO --- Domestic violence occurs at least as frequently, and likely even more so, between same-sex couples compared to opposite-sex couples, according to a review of literature by Northwestern Medicine® scientists.

Previous studies, when analyzed together, indicate that domestic violence affects 25 percent to 75 percent of lesbian, gay and bisexual individuals. However, a lack of representative data and underreporting of abuse paints an incomplete picture of the true landscape, suggesting even higher rates. An estimated one in four heterosexual women experience domestic abuse, with rates significantly lower for heterosexual men.

Well, after the Clinton and IRS obstructions of justices by evidence destruction, the DOJ that won't seriously investigate anything within the sitting Administration, and the back-to-back 'Just making it up' decisions by the Supreme Court, it's safe to say that Rule of Law is officially dead in America.  There is a ruling oligarchy of properly socialized Ivy League social Liberals who quibble a bit from time to time on details about fiscal and monetary issues, and vary from Isolationist to interventionist foreign policies, but any laws that diverge from their socially-liberal world view or interfere with their inside members are meaningless.

Hi5, Sad to say it but this is a really bad sign for America. I don't care personally that gays wanted civil unions under the law so that they could get tax benefits from the government, they have just as much right to lose half their stuff as the rest of us. What I DO have an issue with is the fact that they weren't happy with 'civil unions' even when they were given the same benefits as marriage. Not to mention the FLOODING of the airwaves they have now along with 'Kaitlyn' to try and convince the people who didn't want this in the first place that being gay is okay.

The next thing you know, the pedophiles, polygimists, and DUches that practice beastiality will be lining up and saying 'what about us'? Where does it end? Where do we say this is acceptable for mental deviants to do this? And I use those words purposefully, as all of these things were considered to be mental diseases not so long ago.

I look at what is happening in Greece right now, and I see what Scipio Africanus meant when he allegedly said 'And some day, Rome...' as he watched Carthage burn. We are spending ourselves into unsustainable debt with the 'bread and circuses' to appease the Low-Information Voters. And things like 'free health care' are going to do us in in the end.

I think the deviancy that Johnny is referring to came mostly from the Roman Emperors. Nero played while Rome burned to the ground allegedly and appointed a horse as one of his ministers... Now why does that sound familiar?

Nero was emperor from 54-68 AD. The most commonly accepted end date of the Western Roman Empire was in 476, 408 years later (the Eastern Roman Empire existed until the fall of Constantinople in 1204).

408 years.

King Putt ****ed our country more thoroughly than any Roman emperor ever did, in only 7 years. Nero playing the fiddle (which did not exist in Rome in the first century) and appointing horses as ministers was better for the Romans, than King Putt playing Reggie's skin flute and appointing horses' asses as ministers has been for us.

The "bread and circuses" era was in the second century, and was a populist move by the tribune Gracchus to gain favor of the lower classes. Juvenal wrote about it in one of his Satires. It was not a factor in the end of the empire 350 years later.

The Western Roman Empire declined over a period of 100 years, with military over-extension, defeats, and invasions by  Vandals, Visigoths, and Huns; economic losses; and high taxes to pay for military and government administration. The Roman government didn't give away free shit- it took the wealth of its citizens. The sexual preferences and acts of its citizens, politicians, and emperors had nothing to do with the end of the empire.

Very true that the sexual acts did not have anything to do with the end of the empire directly. However, I look at it as a symptom of the decline. Granted, in Rome's case it didn't happen overnight, but it led to people accepting and demanding MORE free shit from the government.  It led to the citizens demanding a more sedentary lifestyle, while they employed non-romans to fill their legions.

There are some striking parallels in Rome and the US today, and it remains to be seen if we are doomed to repeat history, or learn from it.

Big Dog is factually correct (not surprising!) in his rebuttal, but I agree with you, Ray.

Death by 1,000 cuts. Spiritual and moral decline of the populace, borne out in part by the relentless, determined attack on the part of the proglodytes who trumpet how the gay lifestyle is not only acceptable, but attractive.

Shoving that lifestyle down our collective throats (no pun intended) has had a profound effect on the depravity that is now acceptable and even cherished (by some special sickos).

My personal opinion -- all of this shit, to include the left's targeting of the money that is privately held (they want it all) is going to result in the collapse of this once-great nation.
