Anybody watch "My Name Is Earl" ? let me show you example of how Black is treated
in media.

(pic)

If you have seen the show, the lead female character has a (hold your breath) BLACK boyfriend.

Played very well and quite funny by Eddie Steeples.

But the character, Darnell, is real nice, benign, sweet guy who never raises his voice, almost kinda backwoods dumb but clearly he isnt, etc.

You see the point is since he is with the white girl, he cant be a bad ass, or a normal person, either.

He has to be this other type of character. He has to be harmless.

I dont know if this is as obvious to others as it is to some, but it is to me.

We are seeing more and more tv with Gay characters and mixed race couples, so that is good.

Let's hope that continues and we see less and less Darnell's.

What is this lately on DU? Worrying about dumber stuff than usual? (http://www.democraticunderground.com/10026817596)

I THINK what Randys1, self-appointed protector of black and homo alike, is trying to say is that the Darnell character is an Uncle Tom.

Which means he found it on Netflix and watched an episode. Get a job, Randy.

If you know anything about Darnell, they made him the most badass guy on the show. He's an ex-spy or something, who is retired. And as I recall, his Dad was also a spy
of some stripe, also black and a badass.

The white people on the show are the stupid, hapless ones. Just like Hollywood likes it.

I'm surprised Randy isn't complaining that they're not all gay.

Is that show still on?  I haven't seen a commercial for it in years.

Canceled - hence Netflix, friend of the unemployed DUmmy.

I've seen a few episodes of the show. My wife use to watch it.  The one thing I can say about it, is that almost all of the characters were portrayed as mostly nice but simple kind of rednecks.

It was a pretty clever show with no political bent, really. I enjoyed it. If you read the DUmbass comments, however, they reveal something interesting: they prefer their black men on TV to be loud, boisterous, and pretty much every stereotype of black men they claim to abhor. That's the life of a DUmmy: when they have X, they complain it isn't Y. When it's Y, they picket until they have X.

Sounds like rs1 objects to black people being portrayed as ordinary people. Sounds like rs1 wants blacks to be uniformly portrayed as unpleasant, defensive, hostile, loud and a stupid smart-ass. Kinda like what is sometimes called, Blacksploitation (sp?)

Ain't the damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't world of paranoid perpetual race-grievance splendorous?!

I LOVE Dolemite. Best blaxploitation movie ever, though, is Gordon's War.

I want to do a real black show. This show will be in one of the oldest cities in America. A successful city that was built and run by white people for a couple of hundred years. Then a black majority forms and drives out the evil racist white population leading to political control of the city. The show will chronicle how the once successful city disintegrates even with massive government infusions of money. Soon the city is nothing more than a killing zone worse than any city in the third world.

I will call it "Baltimore Be Black."

Anybody think I can make Hollywood buy into this concept?

All it takes is one brave producer.

Signs at the city limits could say, "Welcome to Baltimohannesburg".

OMG!  Teh horror!  A Black guy portrayed exactly the same way a White hetero male pater familias would be portrayed in an American sitcom!  Oh wait...the White dude would also be a bumbling, childish fool, too, so I guess there is a big difference...

I don't think that thread is going the way he expected.

He's taking a pounding and not the way he wanted.

Wouldn't "Normal" and "Harmless" mean pretty much the same thing in this context?
You guys are right: The DUmmies believe that any black character on TV who isn't some stereotypical loud, defensive, hostile, easily offended, "if Chris Rock were a member of the Black Panthers" type is automatically an Uncle Tom.

That was a funny movie, I especially liked when he did that kind of poem about the black guy named Shine who survived the Titanic!

Randy is neither black or queer (maybe) so is either a mole or just another DUmp lunatic.

btw, to help counter the DUmmy's idiotic assertion, here's an example of a good, well- developed black character on a new show I've grown to like quite a lot (Both the show, and the character):
Detective Clive Babineaux (Played by Malcolm Goodwin), on 'iZombie.'
First off, the closest thing to a racial stereotype he shows is the fact that he's a black man who works in law enforcement.
He's depicted as honest (Though we learn in one episode that for a while, he had to work undercover in Vice and thus display a less savory side in order to earn the trust of the organized- crime scumbags he was infiltrating), smart, friendly without being a pushover, witty without being a snarky smartass, assertive without being overly aggressive, and VERY good at his job. Plus, he never goes into long- winded rants about how hard it is to be a black person in "The white man's world."

In short, randys1 would hate him for all the same reasons why he's whining about Darnell in 'My Name is Earl.'

6. Not the point, and this is my point only, I have no way of knowing if this was

recognized by others or commented on.

My point was since it was an interracial relationship and the Woman was white, blonde at that, the Black boyfriend had to come off as very friendly and harmless, almost to the point of an extreme, if you ever watch the show you will see what I mean.

53. Exactly, he is completely non combative, never angry, etc. Now you are seeing my point

He has a white, blonde girlfriend, so he has to be all those things.

This black sitcom character with the white blonde girlfriend has Randy in quite the discombobulated state.  He's fixated.  It's an obsession.

It's creepy, but expected from a DUmmy. This is the same bunch who projected a ton of racial hatred on a breakfast cereal commercial.

They made Darnell just as big, if not bigger, a tool as Earl.

There was nothing loveable about Joy, in fact if there was a stereotype in the show it was her being nothing more than plain trailer park trash and taking advantage of literally anyone that came too close to her.  Yet, Earl felt compelled to try and right his wrongs to her even after she lied him into a marriage and then cheated on him.  Darnell is shown to actually love Joy despite the fact that he had the character and education to know what she was.

That being said, it was an entertaining show.  My favorite part was the Randy/Catalina angle.
