It's time we have a holiday to honor those who try to stop wars too
Memorial Day and Veteran's Day often get equated, but there is an essential distinction between the two. Veteran's Day honors all who have served the American military in wars. Memorial Day honors those who've perished. It's an annual reminder that wars have grave human costs, which must be both recognized and minimized.
Those costs are not inevitable. We ought to also set aside time to remember those throughout American history who have tried hardest to reduce them, to prevent unnecessary loss of life both American and foreign: war resisters.
War resistors can be heroes
American history is littered with examples of pointless wars fought for bad reasons, and with people who risked their careers and their freedom to oppose them. The Mexican-American War, for one, was a blatant land grab. While James K. Polk claimed that Mexico had struck first — saying in his war message to Congress that "Mexico has passed the boundary of the United States, has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon America's soil" — the truth was that he had sent American troops into disputed territory between the Rio Grande and Nueces Rivers, whereupon Mexican troops, concerned by American encroachment, attacked.
Abraham Lincoln, then in his only term as a Congressman from Illinois, questioned Polk's rationale and introduced what came to be known as the "spot resolutions" demanding that the President point out the exact spot on which American blood had been spilled, to prove that it was really American land. Lincoln received vociferous attacks from Democratic newspapers and meetings back in his district; participants at one rally condemned him as "this Benedict Arnold of our district." But he was on the right side of history: the war was unjustified and caused needless suffering.

What a brilliant idea!
We'll call in Bennedict Arnold Day.
A natiional day to remember all of the traitors to the country since it's birth...

They pine away about the US "land grabs" but the forget that Mexico snatched that land from the Spanish who snatched the land from the Indians who already lived there. Before that the Indians spent about 1000 years grabbing the land from each other. Why are US land grabs bad and it's okey dokey for everyone else to do it?

Because in the selective view of history that Liberals have....nothing bad EVER happened anywher ein the world before the formation of the U.S.A. It's kinda like their view on terrorists and radical Islam.
None of it existed...according to them...until George Bush was illegally elected President and killed Saddam to avenge his daddy!
They've been indoctrinated all their lives to believe that America...free market capitalism and gun ownership by private citizens is the root cause of all the worlds problems.

Just a point of information here . . . If it wasn't for BG Benedict Arnold (pre-traitor), MG Horatio Gates' troops would probably not have won the Battle of Saratoga in 1777. During the Second Battle of Saratoga on October 7th, 1777, BG Arnold led Patriot forces attacking first the Balcarres redoubt, then they took the Breymann redoubt to the north, thus threatening the British lines of communication. John Burgoyne's forces had to retreat to the town of Saratoga on that night.

Almost all of the non-morons who try to stop wars are called soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen ... the people assaholic DU-folk have been crapping on.
-
So let me get this straight, this DUche is equating Abraham Lincoln, the man who was a catalyst of the civil war, who wasn't afraid to use the military, and fired several generals until he got Grant, as an example of an Anti-War Protester? AYFKM?
We don't need a holiday for those who try to stop wars. Chamberlain, if you recall, tried to stop World War II by conceeding to Hitler and getting'Peace In Our Time'. THAT worked so well for Europe, now DIDN'T it? Your president is trying to do the same thing by appeasing Iran, and I for one, do NOT want to see it bite us in the ass the way Chamberlain's debacle did Britain.
There is no need to honor mediocrity and submission, those are what you will be expecting us to honor with a holiday supporting Anti-war protesters. :bigbird:

I like the idea, "All Traitors Day."

I rather like "Neville Chamberlain Day" for this.
Chamberlain's birthday is March 18.
Come on, lurking DUmmies. Make it happen!

He was just another old white guy the DUmmies have never heard of.
A few of them may have heard of Wilt, but Neville?
I think the democrat party could really get behind All Traitors Day.
-
I caught a caller to Limbaugh on this topic today with an inspired idea: First you nominate Harry Truman, then the crew of the Enola Gay! Gag the bastards with their own medicine. :yahoo:

There is already Labor Day and May Day.

Which war has actually been stopped rather than merely postponed?

Zeitgeist came pretty close. :lmao:
-
Modern democrats are consistent in matters of warfare.
They invariably demand American surrender.
-
No one fights for peace and wants it more than those willing to give their lives to achieve it, the soldier.

August 6. Hiroshima Day. Works for me.

All very true and all salient points.
However in DUmmie-think they'd hail Arnold as a hero not for what you mentioned above...but for his attempt to hand over West Point to the British. They'd tell us that it became clear to BG Arnold that the was not winnable and that in order to save lives and bring this useless war to an end he did what he thought he had to do in order to stop that warmonger George Washington. For you see BG Arnold was the first anti-war demonstrator...a hero...not a traitor who deserves much credit for trying to find a peaceful solution with the Brits.

Seeing that, in my youth, I deer hunted on land within a mile of the Saratoga National Historical Park, I know a tad about the history behind the place.

Dead on, Dragoon.

I'd agree with those who suggested it be called Neville Chamberlain Day, a celebration of cowardice, appeasement of evil, and basic treason.
I can think of another advantage to actually making this holiday: Since no decent, self- respecting American would possibly recognize or celebrate such a repulsive, anti- American hippy holiday, seeing those people who DO celebrate it would be an excellent way to smoke out the cowardly, traitorous, anti- American leftist vermin in our midst. Furthermore, seeing those elected officials among us who celebrate it will help the public see who NOT to re- elect.
-
Maybe Timothy Leary Day? Many DU-folk, at least, are unrecycled hippies and hippie-wannabes.

Which war has actually been stopped rather than merely postponed?
That was a question I had, too, Sergeant Bunny. If anything, the protesters caused the Vietnam War to continue on. The reds were on the ropes from the bombing campaign. Uncle Ho was nervous he was about to be chucked under the capitulation bus, the VC were having a hard time conscripting.
Then the college campuses erupted. Ho Chi Minh and his cohorts saw a glimmer of light and were able to snatch their victory from the jaws of defeat. The presidential campaign of 1968 turned into somewhat of a referendum on the war. Next thing you knew, the heliocopters were evacuating the Saigon Embassy.
