Police Reform Coming to California
May 9, 2015 (San Diego)
Let’s start with body cameras, which are seen by many as part of the solution. San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmernan, this week announced a change in policy after a lethal encounter in the Midway district was not recorded. Now, officers will have to turn their cameras to event mode, before they respond to a radio call. To clarify, the cameras are never off. They have two modes. IN mode one they dumb every 30 seconds. In Mode two, known as event, they preserve the recording.
While a welcomed change, release of these videos is still up to the Chief authorizing it. This leaves us with some pause about transparency since these recordings are public documents. The American Civil Liberties Union told this to Channel 7, regarding this:
“There’s no transparency and accountability,†the ACLU statement reads. “It’s completely unacceptable that one line policy change is the same as transparency or accountability. They have policy in place. It apparently it was not followed. The solution is to not change the policy, it’s to hold officers accountable to the policy.â€
We still don’t know precisely what happened and the knife mentioned in the fatal incident has yet to be found.

Will all these bills make it to the Governor? Nope, way too many links as well to actual bill language.
Also, for those going but this is my town only, I predict that you will see these efforts in other states. Hell, WI already has an independent prosecutor. The age of police accountability I think, (I hope) is here.

1. Fingers crossed that something gets done. I feel like the nation is in crisis mode.
Soon, barry can declare Martial Law and we'll all be safer!

2. It is, I have been at court two days in a row so I was not there for the Chief's statement. She was asked by pesky media types about that recording feature oh three months ago. We are pesky, and usually ignored. So I was hopping not to have that in my town for at least a year. There is a march, vigil, et al tonight. It is in a rather sketchy area of town. So we are passing on that one.
is teh NADIN being racist?

Absolutely! Common sense is racist, sexist, and part of thee "rape culture".
Seriously, I do (=walk in) trail and road races, on the order of 1 a month. I won't do to SF because parking is insane and expensive. I won't do Oakland because of its high crime rate. SF races feature amazing scenery; there are probably some beautiful parks in the Oakland area, but I won't go there.
I'm entirely in favor of dash and body cams for police, to the degree practical. My belief is that far more officers will be cleared of false accusations than will be caught abusing their power (granted, the latter will make the papers and evening news, while the former will not).
But, "to the degree practical, is a key qualification. Large amounts of digital data will be created every day, and will have to be stored for God knows how many decades. Since the blacktivist orgs and ACLU won't be paying for those massive new disc farms, those storage requirements would quickly overwhelm many/most/all cities' budgets.
Not that the activists give a @#$% about reality.

It's not the peskiness, gNads. It's the Mexi-Polish Duckspeak. Nobody knows what the hell you're talking about.
So I was hopping not to have that in my town for at least a year.
Hopping won't make it so. Ptarmy can attest to that.
There is a march, vigil, et al tonight.
Et al = looting, vandalism, arson, assault, shitting on police cars, rape, and maybe homicide - all in the name of social justice. In other words... real news.
It is in a rather sketchy area of town. So we are passing on that one.
I guess the Kevlar helmet and body armor, gas mask, and 10" Bowie knife are for city council meetings, car shows, and gamer conventions.
Real life is scary. Right, gNads?

Agreed .... and I have no particular need, or love for, law enforcement.
(granted, the latter will make the papers and evening news, while the former will not).
I would be shocked if they didn't.

So goes the throes of running a news outlet.

Selma certainly has been a shining example of what black reform can do for a town.
