Scientists create algorithm that ‘identifies future trolls from just five posts’

It is possible to tell comment trolls apart from other users simply from looking at the way they write, researchers have found.

Studying the comments on three sites – CNN, Breitbart and IGN – over an 18 month period, the researchers at Cornell and Stanford universities found that users who went on to be banned wrote differently to other users in the same comment thread, using fewer words indicative of positive emotion.
Future banned users also tended to write comments that were more difficult to read than typical users, the researchers found.4

“Studying the evolution of these users from the moment they join a community up to when they get banned, we find that not only do they write worse than other users over time, but they also become increasingly less tolerated by the community

Very interesting...

3. Heck with scientists and algorithms,

MIRT frequently knows the trolls on only the first or second post.

7. But once they squeeze to 100 posts, suddenly they're clear.

6. I used to hunt for trolls....

It was like watching a cat play with a mouse.

Mr Mannn: Continuous mole since 2004...never caught.

Mr Mannn: Continuous mole since 2004...never caught.

My very first mole, in June 2005, is still there and still active. You'd know her if I told you the name. I even think Frank would be surprised.

A currently run four other moles. Two are long term and the other two are only a year or more old.

It's easy to fool the DUmp you are crazy- less so for them to pretend to be sane.

God forbid a university spend resources to actually educate.

I take every chance I can to troll liberals on Twitter with their own hashtags, usually with over the top humorous stereotypes.  It's amazing that some of them take the bait and get pissed off. Feminazis are the easiest to piss off, BTW.

True...but then, they are ALWAYS pissed off.

I can tell from just one post about the algorithm that it is only designed to catch people who are just acting like crazy assholes, not people who are moling.

And DU still has yet to ban me.. Only site I've been banned from is LGF - after the owner went bat-crap crazy and I badmouthed LGF here. It was nothing I've done there to get banned -other than use the same ID (miskie).

In physical science, observing something changes the something. Skillful observation methods are designed to make the change infinitesimal, and thus irrelevant. Try measuring the voltage across a 10 meg-ohm resistor with a 10 or 20 meg-ohm meter, or the waveform across a 22 picofarad capacitor with an 11 picofarad oscilloscope probe to see what I mean.

Predicting the behavior of human beings is difficult; predicting the behavior of people who know they are being observed - whether by other humans or by some computer program - is virtually like the proverbial blind squirrel seeking nuts in the Atacama Desert (it won't find one unless some one puts a nut in its path).
