...and then a man rode through the lines bearing a white flag.
150 years ago this morning, a rider spurred his horse through the Confederate battle lines at Appomattox bearing a white flag, carrying terms of surrender penned by General Lee to be put into the hands of Union General Grant. To all intents and purposes, the US Civil War was over.
...and we have been fighting that war, in one fashion or another, ever since.

No it wasn't, you drunken fool. 14,000 men died in battle after Lee's surrender.

Moron. Comparing all the subsequent political quarreling to the sacrifices of the armies and navies of both sides who lost their lives, limbs, their youth, their health, and were maimed, scarred, starved, abused, and lost everything is beneath contempt.
You are a worthless pig, Pitt.

Gawd. pitt is a moron.
Every book about the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse states that Grant met Lee at Lee's request.
Lee bore no "terms" that he submitted to Grant.
Lee's biggest concerns were to get his hands on rations for his troops.Aa supply train had been captured.
And the biggest/best:
Grant, not Lee, offered terms that, for the time and the type of war that had been fought, were very generous, very civil. And were offered to the Army of Northern Virginia only. At the time. As Northern Virginia was the most active theatre, the collapse of Lee's army after the Siege of Petersburg pretty much ended most of the fighting. The rest of the South's Armies were still in active insurrection (or, as we Yankees termed it, getting their asses handed to them). One by one, they each capitulated over the coming months culminating in South Texas.

Minimizing and trivializing battle, war, and soldiers' & sailors' service is de rigueur among many/most Libs/Progs. Unless it's in the context of some sort of FantasyWorld pacifist propaganda. That exception aside, many/most Libs & Progs can't handle the idea that there are people who endured with honor something that Libs & Progs wouldn't and with which they disagree. More simply, such Libs & Progs needto denigrate and trivialize people who have been more honorable than them.
