Flames ravaged the structure and its surrounding buildings on Second Avenue and 7th Street following the explosion just before 3.30pm. Thick gray smoke billowed across the sky as the roof began to collapse and debris could be seen strewn across the street.
The FDNY declared a seven-alarm emergency at the scene - mixed-occupancy buildings at 121 and 123 Second Avenue, including an eatery. Pix 11 reported that the explosion may have taken place on the first floor, where restaurants, a nail salon and clothing store are located.
Retired FDNY fire chief Vincent Dunn told WABC that it appears the building above the explosion collapsed and the fire was pushing up and out.

Day laborers also told cops they had been working on a gas line inside the kitchen, and there were 911 reports of a possible gas leak just before the blast, a source said.
