5. Not a bad idea, but probably unconstitutional. The right of freedom of speech includes the right not to speak. This seems like compelled speech.

15. This is a wonderful idea.
I think anyone who doesn't vote should be ineligible for any and all government benefits, earned or not.
That would get people to the polls.
And I think anyone on the public dole doesn't get to vote.

However DUmbasses,being forced to do something at the point of a government sword may lead people to vote to limit the power that government has over them.

In order to ensure that everyone votes, there would need to be some sort of national ID card, and some way to verify that people are eligible to vote.
Obama, like most idiot liberals, didn't think his idea all the way through.

I'm down for mandatory voting, with 4 conditions:
1) in order to register to vote, an applicant must present a state-issued photo ID (free if necessary), must prove they are eligible to vote, and must pass the naturalization exam.
2) When arriving to vote, they must present the SAME state-issued photo ID, and must sign a form affirming that they are still eligible to vote in that polling place (felony perjury and permanent forfeiture of voting rights and gov't benefits for false statement)
3) Income tax withholding is made illegal, and all citizens must write a check for the total amount of tax owed, postmarked between 8 and 15 April
4) Election day is 16 April.

This is, of course, a terrible idea.
There are already too many people that vote that are uninformed, and subsequently vote for whatever candidate they like based on really silly reasons. First black guy would be a good example.
Imagine forcing people who could genuinely care less about news and politics to vote. I personally know a few folks like this. I say good thing most of them don't vote. We probably already have too many people in this country that vote.

1.) Polls open the first Tuesday after April the 15th.
2.) Anyone on government assistance or can't show a federal tax receipt showing they paid taxes, can't vote.
3.) No names are put on the ballot. You put the top 20 issues and the voter chooses how they stand on those issues. The computer tabulates how many of those issues go to the candidate and that's who your vote is cast for.

Gradual withholding, ostensibly meant to make payment easier, at the same time makes one unaware of how much one's actually paying.....and easier for the politicians to raise taxes.

Precisely. If you have to write a check for a specific amount for the privilege of being a US citizen, you will 1) respect it more and not want to give it away to anyone who shows up and 2) howl everytime a politician says anything about "we only have to raise taxes this much".
