Rush Limbaugh DUMPED By Chicago Radio Station WLS
Rush Limbaugh, who’s been a fixture on WLS AM 890 for more than 25 years, is about to get the bum’s rush from the Cumulus Media news/talk station, sources said Wednesday.
If all goes as planned, Limbaugh’s syndicated talk show, which airs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, will be dropped by the end of March, according to insiders at WLS.

Syndicated talk show host Rush Limbaugh has agreed to a new three-year contract with Cumulus Media. This means that Limbaugh's afternoon radio show will continue to be heard on the majority of the Cumulus-owned radio stations that the show is current heard on. This would include Chicago's WLS-AM.

The story just said Limbaugh was being dropped by WLS - AM (I thought WLS was FM, but I haven't lived in its broadcast area for a long, long time, so perhaps I misrember on that).

WLS, The Big 89. That's what they called themselves back in the 70's when they played rock music. Back then, there were only a couple of FM stations that could be picked up in central Illinois.
I've picked up WLS-AM as far south as southern Georgia and as far east as West Virginia.

I don't recall which station I picked Limbaugh up on when I was passing through O'Fallon, but every other commercial was a PSA for some government program or public assistance. It was really sad.

'59 until mid 60's I listened to WLS in S.C.....until they dumped Dick Biondy(sp).
And before that, my dad would tune in to them for the Chicago weather because in about 2 days a form of their weather would be here. Heavy snow there and 2 days later we would probably get heavy rain...extreme cold there and our temps would fall in a couple of days.

If true, it means nothing to Rush. There will be another large station in Chicago who will snap him up immediately.
Sigh, I almost threw up a "whiny" post lamenting WLS recently. In the past 6 months, they have gutted their entire local lineup. I've been listening to 890/WLS for nearly 20 years, and the foundation was always the excellent local programs. And Rush was always consistent, right in the middle of the day from 11 to 2. I've even kept listening though I don't live in Chicago anymore. The local shows were entertaining, some political, others not.
Oh well, life goes on.

The author (Robert Feder) has been a Chicago columnist for 30 years or so. His main beat has always been local media, and his reporting is usually pretty accurate.
Cumulus has pretty much FUBAR'ed the entire station. They completely flipped all of my local Cumulus talk station as well. Some of the changes have been good, most others stink. I imagine they've done that with music stations as well.
DAT, I'm stuck in an office most days. I don't have tons of interaction other than a few meetings here or there. My workload consists of working on spreadsheets, within accounting software & paperwork. My one salvation is being able to listen to the radio, and I enjoy talk radio. Even if my concentration isn't always on the radio.

Ralph, you could have ended your sentence there. They've @#$%@#$%ed up their AM stations in SF as well. As best I can tell they're doing stupid things with their Lib-Prog stations as well as their conservative station. They've already had to bring Rush back onto KSFO (560).

When I was a kid and couldn't sleep in the summer nights, I sit and play with an old tube radio that seemed to pick up everything. It also had shortwave , weather, marine and air traffic bands on it.

I had one of those. Did it look like this? This is not the exact radio I had, close enough though. It had a spot where you could plug in an external antenna. For shits and giggles one time my great uncle, who was a ham, plugged it into his main antenna and we got radio stations from way far away. Started with K instead of W. He told me that was out west. Good times. :cheersmate:

Mine was a little older. It was from an old TV/Radio console and I scavenged the radio from the unit. It was old enough that it had 120v going to the speaker. (I found that out the hard way.) It had the brass faceplate on it but the guts of it were completely open.

6. It's all over but for setting the date
WLS is one of Chicago big ones. The call letters are said to mean World's Loudest Station from the days when stations were named (WGN - Worlds Greatest Newspaper, they were owned by the Tribune/WCLF - Chicago Federation of Labor/WVON - Voice of the Negro, it was the 60's/etc etc).
Unfortunately for WLS, they're running somewhere are 25th in the market during Rush's slot (11am-2pm CST). A friend of mine in the Chicago radio business jokes that there's a station that reads the daily lunch menu from the Lettuce Entertain You chain at noon on some radio station and it beats Rush - every day. I'm sure that's not really true but it does make a point.
Premier Radio Networks, Rush's syndicator and a wholly owned sub of iHeart Radio (aka ClearChannel) is in deep chit as non-ClearChannel networks like Cumulus finally come to the realization that hate radio is dead, it just hasn't fallen over yet. You saw this in NYC when Rush/Hannity/Beck all moved to ClearChannel stations. Same in LA.
Works great when there's a local CC talk station that can "suck it up". Unfortunately (or fortunately as the case may be) there isn't a CC talk outlet in Chicago. So....CC has to offer up enough to another network station to take him.
Look for Dennis Miller to get the boot over at WIND. Issue is that they have to give him 60-90 days notice that they're dumping him. He's not a Premier Radio Networks guy so they'll probably want the entire notice period on air. They can't announce Rush coming to WIND until Miller is formally notified and I suspect Premier is rebating WLS a hefty fee to keep the lid on this until it can all look like a seamless transition to a new station and everyone can spin it to their benefit (except probably Miller who probably loses his spot on the dial).
Anyway, it'll be interesting because the new station will likely NOT be susceptible to an advertiser boycott like WLS is. That's because Premier will cut a deal with them that practically (and possibly literally) pays them to take Rush. They can make zero on the ad buys and still make a profit.
It's just too important to Premier nationwide to keep Rush on in the top 10 cities. Losing Chicago would be a crack in the damn that would be hard to recover from.

Yeah, that is the strength of AM, after sunset it will bounce back and forth between the ground and the ionosphere for an amazing distance...used to pick up KOLA Oklahoma City camping in the mountains in AZ and NM...and a station in Shreveport pretty much all over the central US. FM on the other hand is a lot more like line of sight from the tower or repeater, day or night, with no bounce. The sound quality, both fidelity and noise, is a lot better on FM especially if you're driving around in the transmission footprint, which is about the only time listen to the radio.

I heard Rush say that...it had absolutely nothing to do with potentially going off of WLS.
And lurking DUmmies...WLS wasn't failing due to Rush. They replaced all the local hosts surrounding his show, from 5 am to 11 am and 2 pm to 5 pm. Several of the hosts had been with the station for 5-10-20+ years. And they still carry Savage, Levin & Red Eye Radio from 6 pm to 5 am.
Additionally, I can listen to Rush on a variety of stations around the country via IHeartRadio. Suck it, pathetic losers.

There are are three talker stations in the SF Bay Area - that I can recall with my 4:40AM coffee-deprived mind.
KGO, 810 - been there, doing that for nearly 40 years; basically liberal, though probably not liberal enough for DU-folk; it runs 4 hours of new in the AM drive and another 4 in PM drive.
KKSF, 910 - mostly liberal, of the not-liberal-enough-for-DU-folk flavor; Coast to Coast in the late night, early AM slot; AM drive show hosts are sort of libertarian-leaning (maybe KKSF manglement think that's needed for people driving to work, IYKWIM).
KSFO, 560 - national and local hosts for whom DU-folk have hate threads - Rush, Sean, Glenn, Levin; AM drive host, Brian Sussman is solid, a fairly frequent sub host on Mark Levin.
Nosing around a bit, I don't see many national Err-America-grade lib shows on-air on Bay Area radio. Most of the major (if the word can be applied to them) lib national hosts are on satellite radio and/or MesSNBC. Local loon Bernie Ward is doing time for kiddie porn (I'm not joking about this), and the loonier late-night local Ray Taliaferro (like Bernie) left KGO in 2011 (not sure how voluntarily).
Edit: There's still the hyper-dysfunctional Pacifica Radio mis-mangled KPFA, but I don't know to what degree their programming is talk. Their cumulative weekly audience is probably on the order of the audience listening to one day's AM drive show on KSFO.

Libs & Progs have been prophesying Rush's imminent doom since Rush went national in 1987(?). It's a foaming-at-the-mouth hysterical visceral hatred.
Cumulus is almost as dysfunctional as Pacifica Radio. If WLS is going downhill the problem is Cumulus messing with what was successful, not Rush. Cumulus messed around with the schedule of a lot of their stations in a lot of cities, doing far more harm than good, as a whole. And if WLS is dropping Rush, he'll find another radio home for the Chicago area.
