Strong cannabis causes one in four cases of psychosis: Users three times more likely to have an episode than those who have never tried it

Scientists at King’s College London say youngsters must be told of risks
Study will add weight to calls for a tougher stance on cannabis users
More than 1 million 16-24-year-olds in England and Wales smoke the drug
Those who use weaker 'hash' over potent 'skunk' less affected by episodes

As many as a quarter of new cases of psychotic mental illness can be blamed on super-strength strains of cannabis, scientists will warn this week.

The potent form of the drug – known as ‘skunk’ – is so powerful that users are three times more likely to have a psychotic episode than those who have never tried it.

The study, leaked to The Mail on Sunday, will reignite debate around Britain’s drug laws – and will add weight to calls for a tougher stance towards those caught dealing or in possession of cannabis.

According to Crime Survey figures for England and Wales, more than a million youngsters aged 16 to 24 smoke cannabis.

Regular users are most at risk of a psychotic episode, prompting experts to warn that youngsters need to be aware of the dangers of skunk, which has been cultivated to be four times as strong as cannabis smoked by previous generations.

We knew that pot was/is bad.  Our 'betters' on the other side of the political spectrum?  Not so much.

Drugs are bad, m'kay?

However, I am always somewhat skeptical about studies claiming to demonstrate causation, since it seems quite possible to me that the loser stoners most attracted to using the skunk in the first place may well be those disproportionately likely to have psychotic episodes.

Kind of like alcoholism, some people are predisposed to become alcoholics if they ever drink.

Interesting.  I also found the increase of "cannabinoid induced hypernemisis" to be notable.  Increased vomiting.  Cyclic vomiting syndrome.  Docs in Colorado EDs are reporting a rise in it.

Kind of trashes the pot head meme for marijuana for all as a cure for nausea.

A Camden, N.J., man accused of murdering a 6-year-old boy and critically wounding his 12-year-old sister was high on a combination of PCP and marijuana, a drug sometimes called "wet," at the time of the crime, according to local authorities.

Camden investigators have connected PCP use with a number of murders in the city over the past few years, but scientists have yet to directly link the drug with violent behavior.

Back in the '90s, joints dipped in formaldehyde were popular. They were called "dips".

"Sherms", cheap cigars and cigarettes dipped in formaldehyde, were also big.

Some druggies can't seem to wait at all for their appointment with the embalmer.

The formaldehyde causes permanent brain damage, and their skin gets this weird shine to it. It was creepy as hell to see them shuffling around like zombies.

I almost had to shoot a dip-shit one night. I'll tell you the story over a bourbon when I'm in your neck of the woods.

Brother, if you can make it, I'll be there; and I know a great cigar lounge where we can bring our own bourbon!
