The Venezuela-bashing on DU is ugly, right-wing and sickening.
Yes, Venezuela is in crisis at the moment(as is most of the world).
Yes, Maduro has made some mistakes.
Yes, they should have diversified their economy more than they did(although that may not be so easy when you are umder external economic siege).
But the huge number of anti-Venezuela spite-threads posted here on DU lately, gloating about Venezuela's current problems and Maduro's shortcomings, and the obsession some DU'ers have with attacking and trying to delegitimize the freely-elected PSUV government is a disgrace to this forum and a betrayal of what we supposedly stand for.
This is not supposed to be a board that pushes for the overthrow of democratic governments.
This is not supposed to be a board where we seek the destabilization of any government in Latin America(especially any government of the left-since we, of all people, ARE supposed to remember that every coup against a left government in Latin American history has produced a bloodsoaked military takeover that brought nothing but agony to the majority of people in the country where the coup was staged).
This is not supposed to be a board that ever tries, in any way at all to push any other countries on the planet to the right and towards the kinds of economic-royalist policies we fight against in THIS country.
This is not supposed to be a board where DU'ers are berated and insulted for the sole offense of defending a good-faith attempt to create a humane alternative to the idea that life should be driven by nothing but greed and arrogance.
And more than anything else, we are supposed to be better people than the kinds of folks who cheer when other people experience hard times.
If people want to offer real, progressive, socially and economically democratic alternatives to what Maduro is doing, that's fine. But it's not cool and it can never be progressive to post threads that just celebrate Venezuela's problems while offering no positive suggestions at all(I.E., the kinds of threads Henry Kissinger and the CIA would have paid people to start about Allende if DU and the Internet had existed in 1973).
Enough with the spite. Enough with the snark. Enough with the enjoyment of another nation's pain already.
And it's not as if those who post such things have any better ideas.
Another socialist government sucks. Who woulda thunk it?

15. Is there something even vaguely liberal or progressive about Russia today? Most of us did not 'bash' Russia until it started annexing parts of neighboring countries and oppressing gays and lesbians.

13. I'm betting you don't bitch when the OP is about something the US did - I'm betting you pile on and may even consider the US to be the source of all evil in the world. Because nobody does anything wrong, nobody does anything against democracy other than us. Let's pretend the rest of the world lives lives of rainbows and unicorns because the US isn't perfect.
