I found out recently that the new hires where I work are making a dollar an hour more than me...
As their starting wage. I make $9.45 to $9.95 an hour depending on the time of day I work ($9.95 is after midnight which I never work anymore). Minimum wage here right now is $8.00, it just went up a few months ago. So now the new hires at work are getting more money than me because the company had to up the wage to entice new people in, yet hasn't changed the wages of those of us already working there and have stayed there when most people quit after a couple of months. What kind of horseshit is that?
Sometimes you just can'r make this stuff up.

3. I'd ask someone to bump your rate.
Do you get annual reviews? Are they good? If so, I'd take that and build a good case for myself and ask for a bump to more than what they are making (depending on how long you've been there add the normal annual increases to the current start rate).
Or quit and reapply??
DUmmy reasoning.

5. They do reviews I think quarterly now, I can never keep track.
My reviews have been good, I've gotten a couple raises but they're a measly 10 cents each. I started at 9.25 an hour.
If I quit and reapply that would **** up my scheduling and I probably wouldn't be put back into the department I am in, so that's not happening. And asking someone for a raise isn't gonna work, I am just a number at a heartless corporation that cares more about the heartless corporation above it (I work for an outsourcer that outsources for Comcast) than it does about making its employees happy. On the plus side, I appreciate Marx's writings on labour and such more than ever as a result, haha.
They're following your Marxist belief and taking your extra pay and giving it to someone of greater need.

12. I started a job a few years back @ $23,000/year
I was hired as part of a group of 13 people, and we all started at the same $23,000 salary, with annual raises possible thereafter.
Three months later the next group started at $27,000, and we were required to help train them. In essence, we were being paid less than the people who explicitly knew less about the job than we did.
When we complained, the answer was two-fold:
1. It's against company policy to discuss other employees' salaries (a bullshit response)
2. All corporations do the same thing (another bullshit response)
I sympathize!

Nuff said. :thatsright:

That happened to me when I was in my twenties...worked my way up to a decent wage, after a number of years there (like 6 or 7), then the company decided to start new hires at a higher wage, for cost of living increases or whatever. I hired at 5.75 or soemthing like that and was at 9.75 or something...they moved the starting wages to 9.00, but since I was already above that, I didn't get an increase.
Never did think that was fair...if they were going to "raise wages" for cost of living or whatever, they should do it across the board, so those that earned a higher pay didn't get penalized for it.
-
Nine something an hour is not a living wage.........who can afford dope on those kinds of wages......DUmmie/mode/off

This goes against the usual DUmmie propaganda line. Shouldn't the DUmmie be complaining about how his wages were lowered because of the thousands of people applying for one job opening, who are willing, nee - BEGGING, to work for anything they can get so they can feed their poor starving families living out in the parking lot?
DUmmies expose themselves so often now it isn't even sport anymore.

Companies don't always do what is fair -- they do what makes sense for the business. More often than not, "fair" is what is best -- a pissed off more seasoned work force is not good for business.
But, just like giving a discount just a few weeks after you buy a product, upping the ante to get good new people is a business decision. I have never heard of what the OP says -- that entry wages are higher than current employee wages.
Sounds stretchy to me -- some critical piece of data is missing (such as a reclassification of the so-called "entry jobs."
-
The OP never did state which position he held. Is he a janitor complaining about the starting pay of a stock position?
-
Looks like there are two choices - Walk and get a better job, or fatalistically stay chained to your oar with whine and snivel sound effects. Pretty clear which path the DUmmie has chosen.

Ya know, employers pay people based on the value of the services they are buying from the employee. ('least, that's how I work things in MY company). Maybe your employer is trying to tell you something, hmmm?

not necessarily a stretchy, i've been on both sides of this, once as the trainer, once as the trainee (altho as the trainee, i was being rehired by a company i already had a 3 year work history with)
anyway, it does happen, and it can lead to a disgruntled veteran workforce. and yes, companies do have policies against discussing payrates.

DUmmies choose whining even when that isn't an either/or proposition.

I'm thinking with BadCat's description, he doesn't have a choice. Sucks to be him.....but he did that shit himself. ****'em.

I used to work for a big box company. I moved to a store in another state because my husband was transferred there. I got a $2/hr increase for moving to that store and thought that was awesome! Little did I know they were hiring people in off the street that I was training for $4/hr more than I was making. :thatsright: Because they really needed me to train these people they upped my wages, but I had to go to them and tell them I wanted it upped. The company isn't going to give people raises just because they bitch on a message board about it. Then again you can't really expect rationality or intelligence from DU.

Sounds like the conservatives have been right about min wage all along. :rotf:
Once again the DUmmies get something they wanted so bad implemented but, when they experience the results they get pissed.

Man, I hate to see what would happen if this tool was on salary, and even considered exempt. Granted, my father and I joke about the exempt part because we take it to mean "exempt from fair treatment". That's due more to the management culture at our respective organizations than our actual pay.
Only problem working for the .gov is the GS scale being available to the public, so if you mention your grade and step, everyone KNOWS how much you make. Now, where I work is going to pay-for-performance, so that smears the lines somewhat, but that opens up a completely different can of worms.

Agreed. Then again, a 14-year-old with ambition would likely be worth more than the DUmb****.

Had a 13 year old drive a bulldozer for me one summer (his dad wanted him to have a "job" and offered to pay me to give him one) After the first week, I gave him a raise. By the end of summer he was making the same as anyone else. He was one of the best I ever had. The DUmmie in this thread probaly wouldn't last a week without airconditioning.

H5 for proving the point.

I still dont see how these people brag about smart and educated they are but make jack for a salary.
I make over 3.5 times what this guy makes with almost no college under my belt.

Awww....I love the law of unintended consequences. :-)
Hey DUmmie, this is what happens when you mandate an increase in min. wage instead of letting free markets decide.
Or, you're just a loser tool who doesn't deserve a raise.

They probably type better, for one thing.

So they want to bring in someone and pay them more? Doing the same job? At the same level?
Then the guy might have a legit gripe, but such is rarely the case.
However, to be fair, at my last job, I was salaried, and my boss was a backstabbing assclown. After I made it clear I wanted to go back to the field (and he actually signed my request SIX MONTHS LATER), he had to go through the job selection process within my company. I was promised I could go back as soon as I had trained my replacement. It was soon clear that they were going to have to hire TWO people to cover my loss. ****up number one right there--they could have paid me more and I would have taken it, but nooooo....
I was more qualified, knew more, and had better rapport with the field crews than anyone he could have hired. They interviewed five guys (all techs, which is what I used to be), made offers to the only two guys who passed the interview. He offered them BOTH MORE MONEY THAN I WAS MAKING. I am not joking--I would have been TRAINING guys on a system they should 1--already have known, 2--and they would be making MORE than me.
Between that, the politics, and his little clique he promoted at the expense of ****ing over anyone NOT in his clique, I'd had enough. I interviewed with my present employer, and they offered me a job THAT DAY. Granted, it was for a lower hourly wage than I was making at the time, but given the fact that 1--CA versus NH cost of living difference is not insignificant, 2--NH has NO state income or sales tax, and 3--I now got paid for all the overtime I was working whereas I hadn't at the time, and I figured I was actually increasing my REAL income by 15-20 percent, and that money went MUCH farther than the same dollar amount could ever hope to achieve in CA.
I turned in my two-week notice and the boss didn't even want to do an exit interview with me. His loss. I ran into a coworker of mine late last year in Washington who also used to work in the same group. He told me the boss was beside himself scrambling to get a couple of college kids with no field experience to do my job, and they were failing miserably, making him look like total shit. The word, people, is schadenfreude.
Bottom line--if you're an even halfway competent worker in your field with even a modicum of motivation and you think you're getting screwed over, first fight for what you believe in (tactfully, of course), and failing that, take your talents elsewhere where they WILL be better appreciated.

My first job out of college-the-second-time, I started at minimum...got a seven cent raise 30 days later. ::) A few years later, I was at a coworker's house because his wife babysat for me. They were discussing paying bills, and despite being careful not to mention $$, it was obvious from the conversation that the co-worker made double what I made, doing the same job. I mentioned that to my supervisor once, making it clear that the coworker had not ever told me his wage...and was told it was because this guy had "more experience." This was true, he'd been working for ONE YEAR longer in the field. Needless to say, my next raise didn't come anywhere near to doubling my wages, even though I'd been there another year. ::)
When I found another job, they instantly offered to raise my wages by nearly $3 an hour, which was more than the new job, but I figured I'd never get another raise without quitting again, so walked. A different coworker later asked me how much the new job paid, and I told him. He couldn't understand why I took "such a cut in pay." So I told him what I had been making...doing the same job as he, with 2 years less experience. I didn't ask what he made, the look on his face was enough.
When companies restrict employees from mentioning wages, there is a reason. I'm not saying they don't have the right to do it, but I am grateful I have the right to find a better job, too. :-)
