Jesse Ventura To Run for Senate?

In an interview with NPR's David Welna that ran today (http://www.npr.org/templates/player/mediaPlayer.html?action=1&t=1&islist=false&id=92357303&m=92357254) former Gov. Jesse "The Body" Ventura, Ind-Minn., sounds like he may run for Senate, challenging incumbent Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., whom Ventura defeated for governor in 1998, as well as Democratic nominee and former Saturday Night Live humorist Al Franken.
Ventura, born Jim Janos, tells Welna that the main reason he would run is because of Coleman's support for the war in Iraq. "That's the reason I run," he says. "I run because it angers me...All you Minnesotans take a good hard look at all three of us. And you decide: if you were in a dark alley which one of the three of us would you want with you?
Ventura had a stormy tenure as governor and horrible relations with the Minnesota press corps. Thus, it was the June issue of a local wine magazine (http://www.wineheads.com/pdfs/currentissue.pdf) where he chose to drop hints about his pending campaign.
"I'm not a politician, I'm a statesman," he told The Midwest Wine Connection. "I do one term, and then I go back to the private sector. If I get back into the fray again this year, it's only because I've been gone five years back to the private sector. That's what I did when I was mayor. That's a statesman. That's not a career politician."

A hypothetical race with Ventura shows Coleman with 41 percent, Franken with 31 percent and Ventura with 23 percent.

I was under the impression the state was pretty damned tired of him by the time he finished his term, I'd think the novelty/contrarian value would have worn a bit thin for this idea to go anywhere.

I think he announced on larry king last night that he wasn't running. and then he went off on some retarded rant about, "unlesss God tells me to run, like God told George Bush to invade Iraq".

Not that I'd think he was going to make much of a difference anyways.
it has been a while since there was a poll, but he was doing surprisingly well . . .
A June Rasmussen poll showed Coleman with 39 percent of the vote, followed by Franken with 32 and Ventura with 24. On Monday, a Survey USA poll gave Coleman 43 percent, with Ventura and Franken nearly tied at 26 percent.

I hesitate to hazard a guess as to which candidate is helped the most by his decision not to run. I would think franken would
get more of ventura's support than coleman, but that's just because I assume that ventura supporters would tend to support
the next most psychologically unstable candidate. :-)

Its all my fault actually
you see, back in 1997 in the fall, I left the state. Of course there was quite a going away party, involving massive amounts of alcohol, a few hooks ups, some poor judgement choices...

unless he was actually at the going away party, and you somehow damaged him, I think you are off the hook on the whole "Governor Ventura" thing. :-)
