After a schism, a question: Can atheist churches last?
« on: January 07, 2014, 03:15:54 PM »
Quote
The Sunday Assembly was riding high.

The world’s most voguish - though not its only - atheist church opened last year in London, to global attention and abundant acclaim.

So popular was the premise, so bright the promise, that soon the Sunday Assembly was ready to franchise, branching out into cities such as New York, Dublin and Melbourne.

“It’s a way to scale goodness,” declared Sanderson Jones, a standup comic and co-founder of The Sunday Assembly, which calls itself a “godless congregation.”

But nearly as quickly as the Assembly spread, it split, with New York City emerging as organized atheism’s Avignon.

In October, three former members of Sunday Assembly NYC announced the formation of a breakaway group called Godless Revival. ...

I think I heard something about the Godless Revival folks shopping for land near Waco TX.  Or, maybe not.

Can't you just sit at home and worship nothing?
I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.

I don't care what anyone does religiously (with the exception of Islamic jihadi, et al), but I do wonder why the atheists feel the need for a church in the first place.   I assumed such self described free thinkers would shun the need for the type of validation they seem to be seeking by doing this.

You would think sleeping in would be a greater draw.

So many seem to think the point to church is to socialize, not to worship and learn.  If atheists need a place to worship and learn, it would seem like their local public school, college or university would be far more appropriate.   :-)

I'm assuming they are mocking religions.

How hard do you have to look to find something to not worship ?
Cue Jeopardy soundtrack.
There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

Typical Liberal "logic".    :thatsright:
“The national budget must be balanced. The public debt must be reduced; the arrogance of the authorities must be moderated and controlled. Payments to foreign governments must be reduced, if the nation doesn't want to go bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance.”

Can't you just sit at home and worship nothing?

That's the basic problem with it as an organization...there is no unifying principle or hierarchy that necessarily operates to hold it together.  Splintering therefore would seem to be not only possible, but the natural and predictable course it would take even if it didn't spread at all.

Isn't it basically just a coffee klatch for atheists?
