Letter from Scout camp

Quote
Dear Mum,
Our Scoutmaster told us to write to our parents in case you saw the flood on TV and got worried. We are okay. Only one of our tents and 2 sleeping bags got washed away. Luckily, none of us got drowned because we were all up on the mountain looking for Adam when it happened.

Oh yes, please call Adam's mother and tell her he is okay. He can't write because of the cast. I got to ride in one of the search and rescue Jeeps. It was great. We never would have found Adam in the dark if it hadn't been for the lightning.

Scoutmaster Ted got mad at Adam for going on a hike alone without telling anyone. Adam said he did tell him, but it was during the fire so he probably didn't hear him. Did you know that if you put gasoline on a fire, it will blow up?

The wet wood didn't burn, but one of the tents did and also some of our clothes. Matthew is going to look weird until his hair grows back.

We will be home on Saturday if Scoutmaster Ted gets the bus fixed. It wasn't his fault about the crash. The brakes worked okay when we left. Scoutmaster Ted said that with a bus that old, you have to expect something to break down; that's probably why he can't get insurance.

We think it's a super bus. He doesn't care if we get it dirty, and if it's hot, sometimes he lets us ride on the bumpers. It gets pretty hot with 45 people in a bus made for 24. He let us take turns riding in the trailer until the policeman stopped and talked to us.

Scoutmaster Ted is a neat guy. Don't worry, he is a good driver. In fact, he is teaching Horace how to drive on the mountain roads where there aren't any cops. All we ever see up there are huge logging trucks.

This morning all of the guys were diving off the rocks and swimming out to the rapids. Scoutmaster Ted wouldn't let me because I can't swim, and Adam was afraid he would sink because of his cast , so he let us take the canoe out. It was great. You can still see some of the trees under the water from the flood.

Scoutmaster Ted isn't crabby like some scoutmasters. He didn't even get mad about the life jackets. He has to spend a lot of time working on the bus so we are trying not to cause him any trouble.

Guess what? We have all passed our first aid merit badges. When Andrew dived into the lake and cut his arm, we all got to see how a tourniquet works.

Steve and I threw up, but Scoutmaster Ted said it was probably just food poisoning from the left-over chicken. He said they got sick that way with food they ate in prison. I'm so glad he got out and became our scoutmaster. He said he sure figured out how to get things done better while he was doing his time. By the way, what is a pedal-file?

I have to go now. We are going to town to post our letters and buy some more beer and ammo. Don't worry about anything. We are fine and tonight it's my turn to sleep in the Scoutmaster's tent.

That would be funny if it weren't disgustingly viable. The pedal-file part, of course. None of that other stuff could POSSIBLY happen, right?

Son is at Scout camp right now.....let me tell you about the first time he went 7 years ago.

Son had just turn 11 years old 4 weeks before going to camp. There were twelve brand new scouts just moved up to boy scouts from cub scouts the month before going to camp in his troop. They left on Sunday morning and by late Sunday night the cell phones were busy with "Come get me's".....except my son, he didn't have a cell phone. Mom's were calling mom's and planning the "Great Rescue". They called my wife to see if she wanted in on the rescue effort. Monday morning brought news from the scout master that he had taken all the cell phones and for no one to come get son. He informed  the mothers that they could visit on Wednesday evening as was the long time custom at the camp. Wednesday came and a string of cars were in a line headed to the mountains loaded with overly concerned to distraught mothers.......and I was the designated driver for 3 of them and a pickup truck loaded with picnic baskets of assorted junk food and soft drinks in coolers.

We were met at the camp by some sad looking scouts, some in tears and some just sad but all glad to see mom, junk food and wanting to come home with their moms.....except mine.  Mine hugged his mom, gobbled down some junk food, guzzled down a couple of gallons of tea and he was ready to explore some more mountain side with some other boys from other troops whose parents hadn't come up to see them....mom was heart broken but survived.

Saturday, right after lunch, the scouts returned from camp. Concerned and distraught mothers were biting their nails and wondering if their sons had survived a week away from their loving, mothering care. Little scouts with beaming smiles on their faces jumped out of the vans shouting and screaming with joy to be home rushing into the loving arms of their mothers.....all except mine. He was sitting in van looking all dejected and forlorn not wanting to get off. I asked the scout master what his problem was and what happened to him since we last saw him Wednesday evening. Scout master responded that he had been great all week and thoroughly enjoyed camp until they started loading up that morning. He had started crying because he didn't want to come home. :lmao:

Out of that large group of cub scouts that came up to the boy scouts that year, 2 quit within a year, 6 quit within a couple more years and one moved away but not before he made Eagle Scout. The remaining 3, including my son, have made Eagle Scout in the last year. That's 4 out of the 12 making Eagle which is pretty good when you consider that by data from the Boy Scouts that show that only one or two out of one hundred boys entering the scouts stay in and make Eagle. Also, that 4 that stayed in went on a 22 day long Scout high adventure trip to Philmont Scout Ranch. They drove out there by a northern route and came back a southern route stopping all along the way to see points of interest and historical sites.

Great story, JR.  :cheersmate:

I had a pretty good time at BSA summer camp too. Shooting .22s, canoeing, swimming, rowing, even freezing my ass off in one of those "winter" camps in which it was designed for you to enjoy misery.  :lmao:

A classic blast from the past.
There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.
