news versus commercials

Okay now, this is going to sound really weird, until one remembers that I don't pay a whole lot of attention to television, being deaf and all that.  The last time I really paid attention to television was about 15 years ago, shortly after the Impeached One was inaugurated, and I headed off for the socialist paradises of the workers and peasants to see what was there.

Anyway.

While waiting in an office earlier this afternoon, I noticed that CNN was on the television screen--the regular CNN, not that every-half-hour thing.  I thought, well, good, while I'm waiting, I'll see some news.

Alas for me, whatever news there was, was "celebrity" garbage; some jail escapee from New Jersey had been captured in Mexico, and sent back.

I was astounded.  This was regular CNN.....and in one half-hour, it was nearly half commercials; in fact, it seemed as if commercials had traded places with regular shows.

This is probably not something someone who watches television every day over a long period of time would notice, but I suspect there's been a creeping commercialism in television, like maybe half a minute more commercials per half-hour each year.

I recall reading that during the 1970s, there was much hue-and-outcry because the half-hour evening news-shows were "only" 22 minutes, with 8 minutes of commercials.

Oh happy days.

Now, of course someone has to pay for the television programming, the advertisers, and one isn't begrudging them for running commercials.

But man, there is such a thing as "overkill."

You can't escape the commercials anymore. It's not even in between segments anymore. They now get you when you are watching a show. When companies and networks discovered that a lot of their advertising was getting fast-forwarded through by viewers, thanks to the invention of DVR's and TIVO's, they invented a new brand of advertising called "sniping," I believe.

A little pop-up advertisement will appear in the bottom of your screen during the show you are watching. I see these a lot during sit-coms.

It's annoying.

I watch very little tv, mainly because there's very little on worth watching.  When I get in the mood though, I'll channel surf as apposed to looking at a guide.  Try a little experiment; any time of the day, take your remote and do a rapid "surf" through the channels.  Odds are, that like me, you'll find 90% of the channels you hit are currently running a commercial  :mental:

I do not habitually watch television.  I prefer to read, be it for news, for information or for entertainment. 
Another thing about the ads, I see a lot more 'product placement' than in the past years.

frank you just confirmed my decision to kill the cable and keep the darned TV off most of the day. I usually keep it on in the background as a putter around but it's just so full of garbage. I've gotten to where I can't stand to watch it. Too many fast paced, jumbled images coupled with annoying sounds. They really cater to our "gimme NOW I have ADD" society.
I can see November 2 from my house!!!
